Re: Board/Card Games - The obligatory "analogue" gaming thread
Having not collected anything Warhammer-related since my teens back in the mid 90s, I've got to say I'm genuinely tempted to pick up the new edition of Kill Team - think a tabletop version of X-Com, kind of a halfway house between full-fat 40k and a regular board game. Seems like a good way to casua...

Re: What's Out This Week?
For me, there are three things key to being a 'good'/satisfying Metroidvania; 1. Having a world map that feels big and ripe for exploration but never sprawling (and toeing the fine line between linear progression and more freeform play) 2. Making sure each 'zone' feels totally distinct from each oth...

Re: What's Out This Week?
Bit wary of Axiom Verge 2 as I thought the first game was kinda tedious and plodding, and strangely lacking in that indefinable addictive quality that most Metroidvania type games have.

Re: Do you binge play video games or take your time?
My traditional way to play games is to not play any games for weeks or months at a time, then obsessively play one until it is 95% finished, then suddenly lose interest and drop it. I have done this with so many RPGs where I'll play them voraciously, then give up before reaching the ending - I think...

Re: Playdate
Some of the first batch of games have been compared to Warioware minigames. I think the biggest selling point is the design - it's a beautiful bit of hardware, like the Game Boy as reinterpreted by a high end Scandinavian designer. I wish all hardware manufacturers put as much thought and effort int...

Pre-orders for this boutique handheld, hand-crank featuring mini console are live today - any takers? I just cautiously placed a pre order for the console and the case. At $200 it's quite a luxury item, though to be fair the price does include an entire 'season' of games by some well renowned develo...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread
Speaking of SNES games, I just recently bought a pair of 8bitdo wireless receivers for my (hacked) SNES Classic after I realised that they are now compatible with the Switch SNES controllers via a software update. So now I can use official wireless SNES pads on the SNES classic, which dramatically e...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread
I think the screen size upgrade is one of those things that will be surprisingly substantial when you actually have the thing in your hands, and the build quality looks quite a bit neater overall, but yeah, it's not enough as a package to make me want to upgrade. In retrospect, a significant hardwar...

Physical on Apple TV+
I was kinda expecting something along the lines of GLOW, but it's definitely a lot stranger and darker than that.
I like it so far, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting a grip on what the overall tone is, where the story is going and who or what I should be rooting for.

Re: E3 2021 - Schedule and discussion thread
I would say that the first nine months of the PS5 are up there with the best launch periods I've experienced, and a hell of an improvement on the PS3 or PS4, never mind the last couple of Xboxes. Demon's Souls Miles Morales Returnal Ratchet and Clank WRC9 Astrobot Even disregarding Astro as a tech ...

Re: E3 2021 - Schedule and discussion thread
I've got to say, I'm really not seeing anything in the AAA space that's making me even consider investing in a PS5 or an X Box 1x? Series X? The fact that I don't even know for certain what the new Microsoft console is called is probably an indication of how out of the loop I am with gaming outside ...

Re: E3 2021 - Schedule and discussion thread
Not bad, but nothing especially mindblowing either. Was hoping for another 'big' first party title announcement (like the rumoured new Donkey Kong game). Metroid 5, Warioware and Advance Wars were the only things that appealed to me, but they were all nice surprises. I do like the way Nintendo tend ...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread
I got one of those Satisfye grips for my Switch. It allows you to slot your existing joy cons into a larger, more conventional controller sized plastic handgrip and also comes with little rubber hats for the sticks that vastly increase their size and level of grip. Was very skeptical at first, but i...

I decided to embark on starting the Halo series. A series which has passed me by since I never had the means to play it until now. So with the Master Chief Collection on Game Pass, I downloaded it and have started playing Halo CE. I'm really impressed with it, I have played a Bungie shooter before ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?
Hades.
All I can say so far is that;
a. It's the best Roguelike I've ever played
and
b. I still fundamentally do not enjoy Roguelikes much at all
Don't know if I'll stick with it tbh. Finding it a bit of a repetitive grind already and I've only been playing a couple of hours.

Re: Help me make an all time greatest comedy film list!
In the vein of Spinal Tap, I would also suggest Best in Show and A Mighty Wind which are directed by Christopher Guest. Really funny mockumentaries looking at dog competitions and folk music. As for funny Coen Brothers stuff, the one i always recommend is O Brother where art Thou? Just a fun little...

Re: Help me make an all time greatest comedy film list!
Speaking of Bill Murray (and perfect movies), how could I forget Groundhog Day ? There seems to be a real trend right now for movies and TV shows using a similar 'time loop' premise, but in all honesty I don't know why you'd bother when the original nailed the concept so perfectly. I also recently w...
