Re: Games Completed 2020

It's an odd comparison between one of the best looking original Xbox games ever, to a middling looking 360 game that has its moments. Interesting you should say that. I remember fable looking beautiful on the og Xbox too! When I went back to it myself relatively recently, in comparison with other t...

Re: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

I understand where you're coming from and I do agree that having the instant inventory swapping is a plus. For me though, there'd be nothing lost by having the option to say assign 4 weapons to each d-pad button to also allow for real time switching in addition, for a best of both worlds approach. I...

Re: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

Gameplay is still as immaculate as ever of course but this game's technical achievements should not be overlooked. Absolutely bonkers what Capcom were able to squeeze out of the little GameCube. ...There's a reason some of us go completely nuts about this game. Absolutely, I've always been on...

Re: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

Just double checked on my GameCube and there is no wide-screen option even in the original release... So this happened the other day and now I'm playing RE4 again. I've lost count of how many times I've completed this game but I've not been back to it for what must be close to 10 years. I've always...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Good to know. I'm sure I'll go back to 5 at some point, mainly because my terrible brain won't let me play zero until I've completed it! My problems with Judgement were more or less as you've described above. It felt to me like a budget Yakuza, without the heart. The detective minigames were all rub...

Re: Games Completed 2020

In a way this feels like a less interesting version of 5, as that tries a lot of the same kinds of things but goes much further with them. Interestingly my experience with these two games is completely the opposite. I loved Yakuza 4 but recently started 5 and I found it unbearably dull. The way I'v...

Re: Retro gaming

Yeah I only really use emulation for certain systems/titles that I'm unlikely to be able to play on og hardware. I've found that the Wii through a CRT is the only setup I've tried that I'm happy with, set up correctly I've found it's virtually indistinguishable in many cases.

Re: Retro gaming

I have it hooked up to a 20 inch flat screen Trinitron and it looks fantastic on there. For PCE-CD stuff I found Wii mednafen by far the best and simplest emulator. Just set double strike (240p mode) and go! The others I tried had issues with some of the oddball resolutions that system outputs causi...

Re: Retro gaming

Looks great! I love the Wii for it's 240p output. Such a great, versatile console. I had mine hooked up to a hdtv for years. Picked up a second machine and an RGB scart cable a couple of years back and it's been connected to a CRT ever since. I did have it hooked up to a widescreen Trinitron until i...

Re: Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4)

The way you're seeing it on 4:3 screen is actually how it's intended to be displayed, letterbox and all. Just double checked on my GameCube and there is no wide-screen option even in the original release. Even if you had a 16:9 CRT back in the day you'd still be forced to play in 4:3 letterboxed. I ...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Aside from a couple I know I can do without risk, no. The reward is cool but you're much better off saving ammo for the BFG, it's a great last resort panic button (and for immediately eliminating Arch-Viles before you get the crucible) and much more useful for the final boss too. If you go in with 2...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

...anyone who can beat this game with permadeath enabled... Whew, master gamer. I'm not quite there yet! Back half of the game is fine once you have access to the full toolset but those first few levels before you get the super shotgun are the real challenge. That grappling hook really is a get out...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Still playing Doom Eternal. Man this game is good. Finished the campaign on Nightmare, going straight back in for an extra life mode playthrough in preparation for attempting an Ultra Nightmare run (One life, permadeath). Also cleared the two master levels on Nightmare last night. Easily the most fu...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Yeah, I'm definitely in the minority amongst series fans with this one. Overall I'm glad it exists and that it was successful for Capcom. Hopefully it means we get a sequel that I'll gel with better.

Re: Games Completed 2020

Heathen! Hehe 😏 I was waiting for that! To put it very simply... Parts of the game were undeniably excellent but I didn't like: Forced character swapping Nero's consumable arm mechanic V's moveset Encounter design (compared to 3, the gold standard for me) Mediocre boss fights Nobody was more ...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Doom Eternal - PC I liked Doom 2016 but I must admit it's current status as a modern classic baffled me somewhat. I found it's combat chunky and fun, but simplistic. It's level design that rapidly funneled the player linearly through a series of locked off kill rooms felt at odds with the slow expl...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Husband has been very keen on us playing Outward together. So far it seems ugly and unwieldy, so if anyone who's played and/or loved this could explain to me how to enjoy it, I'd be grateful. I've not played it but I remember Chopper posting about it quite extensively recently. Search Outward and h...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Alundra - PS1 26/03 Long overdue replay of one of my favourite games of the 90s. It was then, and still is my favourite 2d Zelda (style) game. It's impossible not to draw comparisons with that series and whilst not as tight and meticulously crafted as, say ALTTP, the game's sheer scale and ambitiou...

Re: Games Completed 2020

Fired up Ridge Racer on PSP with this chatter about it, didn't even realise I had it. It's great isn't it? Graphics are excellent, handling a lot of fun, looking forward to working my way through the tour mode. Couple of races in and I'm impressed. Glad you're enjoying it! Try using the cars with d...

Re: Retro gaming

I actually picked up a PSP Go recently so I'm planning on revisiting it at some point. Looking forward to playing Tactics Ogre too, which I've somehow never played despite being a big fan of Matsuno's games.
