Re: Dark Souls

Phew! What a week to be without internet access. No Steam Offline either so it was a week devoid of Dark Souls and BioShock Infinite. :( Back on the Dark Souls train now. I took out Smough & Ornstein on the third attempt and actually had more trouble getting to the fight without being invaded th...

Re: Dark Souls

Picked up Iaito, Pharis' Black Bow and the Dark Wood Grain Ring this morning. I'll have to stick to my default Pyromancer armour to stay under the 25% equip load to make the DWGR worth using, but I'll give it a try. I'm practising hard on nailing parry and backstab attacks, but backstabs are still a...

Re: Dark Souls

Ah, okay. I'm currently studiously keeping myself under 25% equip to maintain fastest movement. I'm on PC so I can't play without the nerfed DWGR - which means I'd only be able to make good use of it if I stick with my current armour. The extra frames and immediacy might be nice, but I don't want to...

Re: Dark Souls

Friendly advice. The dark wood grain ring really was a godsend. After struggling for days I followed a short guide. The dark wood grain ring negated the difference in movement speed which seemed to be my main issue. It allows you to manoeuvre around them in such away that it was easier to divide th...

Re: Dark Souls

I'm playing melee, which I gather is my first problem given that the bosses are weak to fire and lightning. I'm level 54 with a good health and stamina, plenty of strength and dexterity and my usual play style is medium speed and armour and a sturdy shield. I have levelled heavy armour and light ar...

Re: BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite

I too feel that the Big Sister was terrifying in those opening exchanges. The first direct combat encounter is actually cut short once sufficient damage is done to her, but that took a not insignificant amount of concentration to just survive. This added to the sense of foreboding, which culminated ...

Re: "It's not a game!"

by the way sorry if it's a little confusing above it was pretty much just stream of conscience Not at all. I love your reference to the free-form play that comes from Grand Theft Auto and Minecraft. In much the same way, there is no win state for Brain Training or Wii Fit, aside from the objectives...

Re: "It's not a game!"

Oh, and I'd like to address another common point in this thread. People are saying they don't see why or don't think it should be important to call these not-games as such. But why is it important to continue calling them games? It's not like if we do we won't continue to get them or hear about the...

Re: "It's not a game!"

They're judging it by the criteria of a "game", and it's found severely lacking, thus completely missing the strengths and qualities of whatever it is they're looking at. They are judging it by their criteria of a game, but we continue to have no universal agreement on that. Defining a ga...

Re: "It's not a game!"

Jay and Josh raise an interesting point. Originally there was a distinction between a video game and a computer game, the former being born in arcades and the latter in the home computer movement of the 70s and 80s. The introduction of home consoles united these two terms under the umbrella term 'vi...

Re: "It's not a game!"

The fact that Proteus isn't a game doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. It just means that it's not a game. That's only true if your definition of a game is accepted, but I contend that it isn't. I also agree with Todinho that the medium of video games has no requirement to adhere to any definition of ...

"It's not a game!"

I put together a rambling post on this topic that stemmed from playing Antichamber, Bientôt l’été and Proteus in swift succession. My frustration stems primarily from the unreasonably stiff definitions of 'video game' employed in order to detract from games like Dear Esther and Proteus. I'd love to ...

Re: Dark Souls

Demon's Souls is much the same; several of the levels require a long period of play before reaching the boss. As you said, aidopotato, that's the nature of the beast. Hopefully you're not necessarily losing out by replaying the same section over and over - should be plenty of items to collect at lea...

Re: Eurogamer Expo 2013

Grrr, term time prevents me from attending sadly. There's actually more chance of me going to Gamescom than Eurogamer, as daft as that sounds.

Look forward to hearing all about the meetups. Don't forget to record something for the Conversationals. :)

Re: Dark Souls

Credits just rolled on Demon's Souls. I can't quite marshal my emotions right now; triumph, relief, joy and sadness are all muddled together. Suffice to say that this was something quite special.

I cannot wait to get rolling on Dark Souls again.

Re: Dark Souls

I've just taken down Maneater. Firestorm worked a treat, though I screwed up the first time and let it get the jump on me. It seemed a little tougher to pick a gap in the attack routine of this boss as it pounces so quickly. I'm going to see if I can finish World 3 and then I think I'll take your ad...
