Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

It doesn’t use IR the same way the Wii does (one of the joycons has a camera but it’s pointing the wrong way) but there have been a few games that have mimicked the setup - most notably the Resident Evil Revelations games. EDIT: Okami too has great controls for the paintbrush. Think of it like the a...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

That seems to have been the case for a while, which is why going into Directs you should always just assume you're going to be hearing about the next 3 months of release. If you consider we didn't even know the name or concept of the Switch until October or November before a March release. That year...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

There’s no way that they’d mark it as June 2020. If it’s been delayed until next year it would just say 2020 or at most Summer 2020. Nintendo aren’t really specific about release dates until they have to be. Which is likely why we’ll see a Direct soon! The release window for the next three months is...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Yeah Metroid has never had many story beats or twists (and haven’t fared well when they’ve tried to put them in) but where they shine is the atmosphere and isolation. Super Metroid has a nice little pay off at the end, and there’s a lot you can read into the locations but it’s more adding to the atm...

Re: Retro gaming

I think putting together a list of 20 SNES games that would please everyone is a bit of an impossible task as each person is always going to at least a game or two that doesn’t make it on. But they made a really solid list there and, like Leon said, it’s apparently very easy to pop those missing gam...

Re: The Big CaR Forum Quiz 2018

Brilliant! This was great fun. Fair few guesses among this lot though. Round 1: The Old Ones Are The Best 1. Ron Gilbert 2. Baldur's Gate 3. Persipone.... it's not that, but I'd know it if I heard the name! 4. Muppet Babies go to Hollywood 5. Vector Round 2: Modern Classics 1. Aiwin......

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I feel like I'm really getting the hang of Simon Belmont. You can do some dirty stuff locking people into place with the fire bomb and then whipping them. It’s just like a real Castlevania! I’m also playing Smash. It’s ace and Captain Falcon is still my boy. I’d say I’ve probably unlocked half the ...

    I hope no-one minds but I'll put the link to a little blog I've put together where I've been putting some of the bits I've written about games I've been playing or things I've been into. The pieces on there are pieces I've posted on here, however some of you ...

You've got my vote. And yeah, echoing the positive thoughts. Cane and Rinse does sound like radio - a nice quiet confidence in talking about games with reverence they deserve.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Loving Pokemon Let's Go right now. I was 12 when I first started Pokemon Red, which was probably just the right age. For me the idea is brilliant - every single thing you fight you can use. A trainer has a really cool looking pokemon? Check your pokedex and find out where it hangs. That pokemon in t...

Re: Videogame Deals

I'm not that familiar with the genre, but I think a large section of VNs are romance games many of which don't really have puzzles. Think Hatoful Boyfriend or Doki Doki Literature club but played straight.

Edutainment - Learning from games

I'm a teacher, and I play a lot of games. Games are brilliant teaching devices. They can quickly and intuitively explain to you how a new concept works in a supported way, before pushing you to apply it to a new context. Not only that, they can lead you so it's you that is making the discovery givin...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Never played a Dragon Quest game other than a bit of a dabble with the very first, so I decided to pick up Dragon Quest IX as it was cheap and convenient to play. Loving the bright characters and monsters. Graphical style is a bit of an odd mishmash between polygons and sprites, but it’s a pleasant ...

Re: The state of the industry

From my perspective as long as these guys/gals signed on to this and get their overtime I’m happy for them. It seems horrific if you haven’t done it yourself but when I was working those hours it was the norm. You sort of get on with it. Obviously If they didn’t agree to overtime and conditions are...

Re: The state of the industry

The first one is global developer unionization. Why this isn't already a thing, I'm not sure. Although I suppose that american work culture may play a large part into this. I think this would be a good first step, though I think the big first step would be getting the message out there to as many c...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

Was coming to this thread to specifically say that I've started Akira, finally. It has such a tremendous sense of place and the colour palette is magnificent. The anime is obviously wonderful but this is something else. I'm genuinely thrilled. I’m reading the black and white version. I had a look a...

The state of the industry

People making games have not had such a great time recently. *Armchair pundit warning* The long and short - many of the people who make the games we love are being treated like garbage. There have been several high profile stories the details of which have been echoed in many others throughout the l...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

After you read a few manga, you get used to it! I’m trying my hand at the Japanese but according to Amazon reviews at least one of the English editions has been flipped which is either a nice compromise to help western audiences or a shameful betrayal of the original intent of the author and his fin...

Re: Comic Book Chatter

Starting to get through Akira for the first time despite owning the first volume for around 5 years now. It's amazing - wonderful cityscapes and technology you can just kind of feel clicking together satisfyingly. But also kind of dirty and lived in, which is nice. This is more a backdrop to everyth...
