Re: What's Out This Week?

Monster Hunter Rise reviews are very strong, with Eurogamer claiming it's the best Switch game since BOTW . I love MH but thought World was a little bit shallow. Not been playing very much of anything since Demon's on PS5 but I hope this will be the one to get under my skin. I miss being truly abso...

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?

I've been watching some glorious stuff recently. Not enjoyed or watched so many movies in years and years as over these last few months. I've really fallen in love with film again. Suspiria (1977) I'd somehow never seen this until a couple of months ago when I got the CultFilms Blu-ray. Absolutely b...

Re: 462 - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Despite being an enormous fan of Zelda, I've never finished one of the 2D entries. I love the idea of a pocket-sized Zelda but in practice, I tend to drop off them quite quickly. On reflection, it's the grand sense of adventure of the 3D games which provides my enduring memories of the series. In th...

Re: The Witcher III

For another perspective from someone drawn more to the Triss plot line, the masquerade ball was one of the most touching and genuinely romantic experiences I've ever had in a game. I didn't want it to end. A lovely moment. As weird as this may come across, she reminded me of my wife (swap black magi...

Re: 476 - The Last of Us Part II

If this was a PS1 era game maybe it would have come with "Abby" and "Ellie" discs. That would have been fun. This is a brilliant idea, and I'm intrigued by DomsBeard's suggestion of flipping the order. The 'reveal' wouldn't have had the same impact, obviously, and I think the pl...

Re: 476 - The Last of Us Part II

I should also say that my initial post wasn't about the vile homophobic/misogynistic (and more) backlash, but rather more specifically that 'it didn't make me feel what it wanted me to' is an increasingly common, self-satisfied criticism online. It's often presented as the final word, a no-comebacks...

Re: Shameless Self Promotion

I've started a series of articles for Buttoncult.com on lesser known PS2 action games. This will be the first of ten, releasing weekly. Hopefully somebody here will get a kick out of it (besides me)! https://www.buttoncult.com/home/relics-berserk-millennium-falcon-hen-seima-senki-no-sh I assume you...

Haha. Very good.

Sorry for pulling this off thread, by the way, but I've enjoyed the subsequent chat.

Re: 476 - The Last of Us Part II

This post exemplifies why I don't really bother with gaming discussion any more. As a whole, the community is still stuck in the playground. Hopefully you don't feel that the discussion on the podcast is also stuck in there with it! :) No, it's not intended at all as a slight on the podcast. I list...

Re: 476 - The Last of Us Part II

I hated the first game and found the ending so morally reprehensible that I had no intention of playing the second game when it was announced. When everything leaked, I just read all the spoilers and laughed uproariously, knowing I had made the right decision. This post exemplifies why I don't real...

Re: 476 - The Last of Us Part II

Great post, Jon. So much of the discourse around this game is a treatise on whether 'it worked for me' or whether or not 'ND made me feel like they intended'. I find that approach a critical dead end because the criteria against which it's judged are often unclear, and tend to say more about the cri...

Re: Our next podcast recording (7.3.21): 459 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989 arcade) and The Simpsons (1991 arcade)

The first time I saw the Turtles arcade game was during a family day out on the glorious riviera of Rhyl. I was absolutely berserk about the series at that point, wearing my Raphael baseball cap every day for months until it wore out. I was blown away by the graphics and sound effects, like all the ...

Re: 463 - Final Fantasy VII Remake

Where the original game was a masterpiece of suggestion, using microcosmic snapshots to evoke a much grander whole, the Remake sometimes falters in its literal presentation, particularly with transitional areas. Structurally, it is uneven, with repetitive corridors, backtracking and formulaic side q...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I picked up the Space Invaders Forever collection on the Japanese eShop for half-price. Still cost me £25 and it's a bit of a rip but Space Invaders Extreme is pretty much worth it for me on a generous day. I scarcely have the energy or patience for games these days, my day-to-day life has been expo...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077

Aside from the lighting, it's a very unimpressive and unimaginative game. The pre-release hype and self-mythologising look frankly embarrassing at this point, and that has nothing to do with the bugs. Every aspect of the game besides the ray tracing has been done to death better elsewhere. The Witch...

Hardly listened to any podcasts or played any games for the last few months, but really looking forward to this one and catching up with what I've missed from Vol 9, too.

Edit: There needs to be a Patreon subforum on here to talk about this...

Re: Cyberpunk 2077

It read as a punitive measure, initially, but who knows? The reality is that even discounting the bugs, you're left with well-worn, derivative gameplay within a very shallow open world. There's more interactivity in Skyrim. Fair play if you can look past that or if you were looking forward to someth...
