Re: All things God of War

But how cool would be if his theme from previous games would play when he goes into the Spartan rage! Yeah, that would have been amazing. But really, I'd be fine with not re-using any of the past soundtracks if it meant that the new GoW would be full of its own memorable tunes that help to better e...

I'd like to know as well. Is there a dedicated thread somewhere? I can't find it if so. What exactly are the criteria for guest appearances on SoP?

Re: All things God of War

There is one element I forgot to mention, one that I definitely feel less charitable about, and that is the use of music in this game. There is a trend in the video game industry to nerf music nowadays - to keep scores in the background and to focus on sound design and voice acting instead. A lot of...

Re: 324: Resident Evil (2002) (Biohazard)

I think the term "survival horror" is a very interesting and oddly specific one in that it combines a mechanical genre descriptor ("survival") with a thematic genre descriptor ("horror"). The latter is easily understood: after all, horror fiction has existed within othe...

Re: Genre newbie support thread

They may perhaps not count as typical JRPGs, but how do you feel about the Pokémon games, Ben? They're significantly less wordy than others in the genre and have a very clear sense of structural progression, which makes them particularly inviting for newcomers. Other than that, what about Undertale?...

Re: Genre newbie support thread

I'm in a similar boat as you, Craig, in that I'm also struggling to get into hardcore shoot 'em ups. But I'd like to point out just how much I love Resogun and how it has helped me understand the fundamentals of the genre a lot better. The game is surprisingly easy to pick up and very newcomer-frien...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've been playing some Devil May Cry 4 after picking it up in the recent PSN sale. It's interesting to revisit this game for the first time since its initial release. After 10(!) years of playing and analyzing various games and becoming more passionate about the medium, I have a newfound appreciatio...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Yes, it's a bit disingenuous, isn't it? I suppose it's due to the whole "gotta spend money to make money" mentality. If you throw enough cash around and generate enough buzz around your product, it will heighten your mind share / branding which will in turn have a positive effect on sales....

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Same here! I've grown to appreciate the way they communicate with their audience nowadays. Pre-recorded videos are usually factual and to-the-point. It's certainly less irritating to witness than the "crowd-pleasing" E3 nonsense where every developer thinks they're God's gift to stand-up c...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Yes, that's fair. I don't need a Direct if they have a substantial E3 presentation this time around. But I'm under the impression that Nintendo has been slowly moving away from industry-wide events such as E3 and TGS and focusing more on proprietary events in recent years.

Good to know, thanks. Silly minds think alike, I suppose!

I just hope there is one coming sooner rather than later. I want to know if I should start looking into a Switch or not.

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

Do we have any idea when the next Nintendo Direct is supposed to take place?

I'm getting a bit nervous just waiting for certain infos to drop without any time frame to go on.

Re: Red Dead Redemption II

My guess would be that since Rockstar games are pretty much guaranteed to break sales record left and right, they are intentionally playing their cards pretty close to the chest and only showing the bare minimum necessary to generate interest in the game. No need to spoil half the game's highlights ...

I like a good western now and then, and this looks fairly interesting. The first one is really good.

I doubt I'll buy it at launch, though.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

For what it's worth, I've had a similar experience with The Evil Within 2. Played a few hours of it, thought it was "bleh" at best, turned it off, never went back to it again. Mikami's declining career will probably remain one of gaming's biggest mysteries to me. In the late 90's he paved ...

Some of the [REDACTED]s did a number on my hardware, though. As soon as the effects started flying on the last one, the frame rate just gave up and went into hibernation!

Very sweet endgame content, though. Have fun!
