Re: Empire Top 100 videogames list

It's hard to quantify what is and isn't a 'good' or 'bad' game, and yes, nostalgia often clouds one's opinion. But I do firmly believe that Nintendo have always made the best games in the business for the simple reason that their games - on the whole - are so finely crafted that they still stand up ...

Re: Videogame News

Looks nice! I'd be tempted to trade up IF Nintendo also overhaul their online experience (tie purchases to your account rather than your console etc).

Having said that, why oh why didn't they just put a second stick on there to begin with? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Re: Our next podcast recording: The Last of Us

Interesting, thanks. Is there much actual exploration though? I have it in my head that's its a very linear/scripted kind of game.

It still blows my mind that no one has yet made a proper post-apocalyptic open world game in the vein of GTA.

Re: Empire Top 100 videogames list

I'm not too surprised about the lack of Platinum, Empire is going to skew mainstream and their games are very niche and obtuse almost by design - I consider myself a big gamer and even I really couldn't get on with Bayonetta or Vanquish. I just didn't like them on a design/aesthetic level.

Re: Our next podcast recording: The Last of Us

I've always given TLoU a wide berth, mainly because I suspect it wouldn't be my cup of tea. The consensus seems to be that it's a good game primarily because of the presentation and story, despite some pretty big flaws in the actual gameplay. I've never bothered with the Uncharted series for the sam...

Re: Empire Top 100 videogames list

I know there's little point in arguing with a democratic list like this, but part of the fun of these things is seeing some of the egregiously undeserving ones that somehow snuck in - for example Empire's recent '100 Greatest Films of All Time' included Prometheus, which doesn't even belong in a lis...

Re: Geek Fitness

I'd always been naturally skinny but started to put a bit of weight on when I started working long hours in an office job in my late twenties. Went from 'S' size clothes to 'M' and got a few pretty brutal comments about my weight gain from friends and acquaintances (funny that everyone seems to thin...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I remember somewhat enjoying Enslaved but yes 'laggy' is definitely a word I would use to describe the controls. Hard to put my finger on exactly why but it never played as smoothly as I wanted it to. I'm not really keen on games with a heavy narrative focus but took a special interest in this one d...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Dabbled a bit with Fire Emblem: Awakening and Project X Zone, both of which I found completely impenetrable. I think I've got too much going on right now to dedicate the requisite brain power! I also downloaded Liberation Maiden on 3DS as the manga visuals and lock-on focused shooting mechanics gave...

Re: The 3DS / Nintendo Direct Thread

Dying to play Shovel Knight on 3ds but it still has no Europe release date as far as I can see. Doubly frustrating that I now live in America but still cannot download it thanks to nintendo's archaic region locking.

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Very slowly working my way through Luigi's Mansion 2 on the 3ds. Never played the original but wish I had. Plays beautifully and is utterly charming as most Nintendo games are.

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

Ha, hadn't considered the issue with Die Hard. I remember I had the Predator light gun (clearly a rip off of the lawgiver from the Stallone Dredd movie) and that it was always wildly inaccurate! Figured Twisted Metal might be a bit too obscure, but thought it was worth mentioning for the David Jaffe...

Re: Game suggestions for the podcast

Here goes... Blast Corps Absolutely loved this game back in the day - an unsung hero of the N64 era. I remember it getting a lukewarm reception but imagine it's dated better than a lot of N64 titles. Such a great central concept and I loved how it just kept expanding out, ever more vehicles, levels ...

Re: The "Introduce yourself" thread

Hi folks! Long time listener to the (thoroughly excellent*) podcast - thought it was about time I chimed in. I'll probably post a few suggestions and maybe give some opinions on featured games for future podcasts (regret not doing so for many favourites covered in the past!). A bit about me: I'm a L...
