Re: Games Completed 2019

The Return of the Obra Dinn (PS4) Very happy to play through this again (originally on PC in Jan) and loved it. It holds up very well to a second playthrough, even though, in theory, you know who most of the crew are ahead of time. I didn't cheat and only identified someone I already knew when the ...

Re: Shmups

https://i.imgur.com/6q1xvDB.jpg Ok, I guess I'd better put a disclaimer....it amuses me that often, when some great feat is posted here, there is a teeny amount of shade thrown with the congratulations. I know it's probably just the technical nature of the games that throws up these caveats, rather...

Re: Games Completed 2019

That's very impressive! It took me 11.2 hours on Steam but I did restart after 60-90 mins because I didn't have a handle on the mechanics/navigation.

Ah yes, I'm just being pedantic really, I take your larger point!

What was the King's Field you finished last night like? Pretty good or no?

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Fascinating to me that From (and Myazaki) received so much praise for bucking current game design trends with demon's souls in 2009 when actually it was very much in line with their previous work. Well, to be fair, we'd had three years of Wii mania at that point, and the big game of 2009 was Unchar...

Re: Games Completed 2019

Yeah, good points! I just looked back at my trophies and see I have them all too. By the looks of it I only had to go back and do the Owl one, and the two paths at the start. No platinum on PS4 unfortunately. ---- Generally my completion criterion for Out of the Park Baseball is winning the World Se...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Interesting! I'm not really one for reading vast amounts of text in games, but from the screenshots I've seen, this one might be worth it. At any rate, I'm up against my budget for game-buying this year once I get Obra Dinn on PS4 so I will wait till the new year. Thanks for the impressions.

Re: Games Completed 2019

Also, with Edith Finch it seems to be a case of whether the themes explored in it resonate with you or not. I suspect parents, or people past the prime of their life, might find it cuts deeper than others. Very interesting point, though I might mildly disagree, I'm not sure. The scene I see most of...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I bought Disco Elysium yesterday. So far im in love with that game. When i read RPS review that said its very Torment-like i was instantly sold. I havent seen too much of the game (so far only dialogues, no combat or anything) but i already love the writing and how you can shape your characters thr...

Re: Survival Games

Frostpunk is on my radar, but I was under the impression it was more of a slightly different genre? (My ignorance is showing, I bet!) But I'd like to try it at some point, during a sale or something. Yeah, I'm reaching a bit with Frostpunk. TBH I scanned the genre's big hitters and thought, KSub wo...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Meanwhile, I've gone back to the God of War reboot, this time on NG+ on the highest difficulty. I like this game a lot. I also think it's very flawed in many respects. But it has a... sincerity that is doing wonders for me and making me overlook a lot of the issues I would be less tolerant of in mo...

All good things. So why has it left me feeling hollow and slightly ripped off? https://i.imgur.com/exktlD6.jpg  I dunno, was the game really that short? You didn't feel this way with Untitled Goose Game? Just generally, I guess if we went into more things blind, we'd probably have more viscera...

Re: Survival Games

I have an interest in survival games in and of themselves, but most of those I'm familiar with seem to adopt a very free and open-ended gameplay structure which is often at odds with my, admittedly, rather narrow preferences in that regard. Yeeeahhhhhh ... always dangerous to try and interpret some...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

On a whim, I decided to check out Nauticrawl, another game in the Objects in Space mould where you must fly/drive a ship/machine via instrument feedback and buttons and levers without ever seeing the outside world. It has been described as Let us imagine...that David Lynch, fresh from making Dune in...

I may have linked to this Dead Space article before: ".. ultimately the market showed us something obvious, which is that Wii customers didn’t want a survival horror." [in regard to Dead Space Extraction]. https://www.usgamer.net/articles/dead-space-10-year-anniversary-wright-bagwell-visce...

Re: Survival Games

I went back and looked at my posts when I was playing Subnautica and I was surprised to see I really didn't like it much to begin with. It was only my last post that I really came around. I guess giving it time to sink in and then all the subsequent articles and forum posts I read, elevated it. Funn...
