Re: 399: Donkey Kong Country Returns

After a strange console generation of music based spinoffs, it was wonderful to see Donkey Kong back in the style that made him relevant after the arcade. 2010 was a incredible year to be a Wii owner and platformer fan with this, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Super Mario Galaxy 2 out in the same year. Speak...

Re: Games You've Started But Never Finished

A fair few I can think of alright! Some of these I regret immensely, others I really was not feeling it. Rayman 2: Loved the hell out of this but I had the N64 version and our memory pak was busted so every time I played it I always started from scratch. Parents were not going to splash out on a new...

Re: Videogame Criticism

Exactly. "Cerebral backtracking" that is actually meant to activate the player's sense of direction and to reward memorization and spatial awareness is an absolutely wonderful thing when done right. Metroid will always be the gold standard in that regard but I would argue this is also one...

Re: 394: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

When I initially heard that a Banjo-Kazooie title was coming to Xbox 360 back in the mid noughties I was ecstatic. The N64 Banjo titles are, to this day, among my favourite 3D platformers and seeing those characters and their fun, goofy worlds in HD sounded like a dream come true to me. Banjo-Threei...

zyoGD6uwCmk Mark Brown with another really insightful installment of his Boss Keys series, this time about the ingenuity of Metroid Prime's world design. With "backtracking" being such a filthy word and "exploration" meaning "wide open spaces with countless loot items and d...

Re: All things Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku)

IJINCHO WILL BE 3-4 TIMES BIGGER THAN KAMUROCHO & GAME LENGTH WILL DOUBLE?! Damn. I spent about 75 hours on 5 and 0 each. More does not necessarily mean better. Detailed locations have always been a big part of Yakuza. It will be interesting to see how they handle it. So, I am currently 44 hour...

Re: Anyone a fan of emulation here?

Agreed with many here on the benefits of emulation, particularly in regards to preservation and accessing titles not available in certain regions. For example, I would never have played the delightful Mother 3 if not for the fan translation patch done by the dedicated bunch over at starmen.net and G...

Re: The videogame music thread (also Sound of Play submissions)

Ghost trick was easily one of my favourite games for the DS. A interesting premise, compelling story, fun characters and intricate puzzles all add up to one good time. Often in the game, the main character is in pretty dangerous and tricky situations and when things are at their bleakest, this littl...

Walking onto the Palace Pier and seeing two pedestal-mounted Space Harrier cabs in full hydraulic flow was one of the all-time jaw-dropping moments for me. In terms of how the Home machines of the time handled it, well... NY6nZ9DIOxs Galaxy 1 remains one of my absolute favourite games ever, and tho...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Galaxy 2 is truly wonderful, just brimming with creativity and fun. Along with the original, absolutely worth getting a Wii for. Still plugging away at Yakuza 0, just going around the district is a real delight. So far, I had to put up with a diva of a director for a shoot, help a hardcore punk band...

Re: June 2019

Just got around to listening to this one. The section where everyone is recommending their favourite LPs and general Youtube stuff reminds me of one of the best Let's Plays I ever came across. Since Ryan mentioned Diabeetus and Slowbeef, their playthrough of the entirety of Sonic 06 is just an absol...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Just started Yakuza 0 on PS4 and it has made a great first impression on me. Story seems to be legit compelling and the combat has the potential to be deep and rewarding. Also there is a goofy campiness to the whole thing that is quintessentially SEGA to me and has really made it very endearing, Kar...

As soon as I seen this on the homepage, listened to it ASAP. This was a wonderful episode; Grant Kirkhope, what a get! Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

Gravity Rush 2 has been pissing me off lately, I am at a part where I have to use my gravity shifting powers to stop missiles from hitting a tower and let me tell you that this game is at its absolute nadir whenever you have to shift gravity under a time limit. I always panic and overshoot my target...

Re: E3 2019 - Conference times and general chat

I think the switch over to the more 'realistic' graphical style with FFX is when I lost interest in the series as a whole. The outlandish costume design and hairstyles make sense visually when the characters themselves are very stylised, but they look ludicrous on relatively real looking human figu...

Considering how big gaming reveals get leaked so often these days, that is truly impressive. Must have very tight security in Nintendo HQ!

Yeah, never played any of the Panzer Dragoon games so I cannot wait to pick it up later this year! Glad Sega is going back to some of their Saturn stuff, it was always a neglected machine when compared to their other consoles.

Re: E3 2019 - Conference times and general chat

Anyone else think that the FF7 character designs lose every single ounce of charm and instead actually look really silly when they’re rendered in the quasi realistic style of the remake? Yep, 100% agreed. I played and finished FF7 for the first time last year and I thought its chunky visual style g...

Re: The Nintendo news and discussion thread

I have lost interest in E3 over the years, of course there is always stuff announced that I am excited for but it has been a really long time since an announcement made me go "HOLY SHIT!". Banjo in Smash made me say just that. This has been on so many Smash fan's wish lists that when I see...
