Re: Death Stranding
For many reasons I find his output absolutely fascinating. That’s just it; for all of the absolute nonsense I wouldn’t really have it any other way, because big budget weirdness in any media industry is so rare. And it is great; I’ve put around 40 hours in now and finding its flow of delivery, expa...

Re: Whatcha Been Watching?
I watched The Two Popes soon after The Irishman. It was interesting comparing the two different approaches to 'de-aeging'. The former opts for the tried and tested method of having a younger actor play the part. Unsurprisingly, it worked. Like it's been working for the past 100 years. It seems to w...

Re: Death Stranding
But on the other hand, every piece of popular media I can think of that tries to deal with simple philosophical themes instantly gets dismissed and mocked because of it. It happened to Watchmen . It happened to The Matrix . It happened to Metal Gear . You’re right to call me out on this because my ...

Re: Death Stranding
I finally started Death Stranding a couple of weeks ago as my 'long play' game and despite everything on paper being anathema to me (fetch quests, Kojima's 6th form philosophies, celebrity casting) it has really drawn me in. I'm around 12 hours in and on Chapter 3, but the atmosphere created by the ...

Re: Mental Health
I hope that doesn't sound like a self-pitying tale of woe. It's not meant to be. I just think it's important to shine a light on the multi-factorial nature of a deteriorating mental health. *THIS* Part of the reason why I didn't get help for so long is because I've always been very independently mi...

Re: Mental Health
Another year and another Blue Monday draws to a close. I thought I’d resurrect this thread in case there are any people struggling with mental health issues currently that might benefit from knowing about my experiences. For those who aren’t familiar Blue Monday is the name given to the third Monday...

Re: 402: God of War (2018) *recording the week ending 19th Jan.*
The word that comes to mind for God of War is ‘chunky’. Everything in this game has weight and heft. You feel the inertia of Kratos’ mass before he moves, sense the impact of his many, many axe throws. When they finally appear even the Blades of Chaos seem to carve the flesh of enemies, rather than ...

Re: 401: Red Dead Redemption II *recording 17th Jan.*
Read Dead Redempton 2 is the Netflix series of the video game world, with a budget that most of its contemporaries can only dream of, moments of undeniable brilliance and peerless levels of art design and execution. Yet it’s also padded to an unnecessarily RPG-like length, without having enough stor...

Re: Well Twitter has been interesting today hasn't it.
Just echoing the messages of support for the CaR team. I’ve been listening to the pod for years because of the balance you bring to the games you review, and the lack of ‘dude-bro’ culture that turns me off so many other gaming sites. If certain parties feel attacked when you call out elements of th...

Re: iOS and Android gaming
You know what, I laughed when they announced Apple Arcade, wondering where it would fit in between my big screen gaming on the PS4 and the more fun stuff on the Switch. After signing up for the free trial I think they’re on to a winner. A Netflix-style subscription model for short, indie experiences...

Re: E3 2018 - Conference times and general chat
It doesn't seem to have been a massive year for surprises, which seems a shame given the point at which this console generation is at. Still, even if the next year is going to bring a lot of iterative sequels they at least look to be highly accomplished ones. And if they can nail the tone of the Las...

Hey CnR! I've had a bit of a video game sabbatical, but I'm learning to love them again with the help of my new Nintendo Switch. Here's my friend code if anyone is up for some Mario Kart sessions:

Re: Star Wars
Ah, I was actually very pleased with Michael Giacchino's work. Perhaps it lacked new standout themes and melodies, but I thought he got the tone and mood spot-on. I'm really impressed with Giacchino's work on Rogue One. The one mis-step is the 'Jyn theme', which uses the opening motif of the Star W...

Re: All things DOOM
I know I'm preaching to the converted here, but Doom 2016 is really impressive. I don't think I've enjoyed the simple act of moving in a FPS so much since Unreal Tournament, and once the music is pumping, guns are firing and demons are falling it becomes a zen-like experience. Bravo id, bravo

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread
Just catching up the news of the PS4Pro and I'm amazed that they won't allow for Ultra 4K BluRay discs to be played. Seems like a key feature if you're interested in 4K and making a choice between the PS4Pro and the Xbox One S (or Scorpio). Free HDR upgrade for existing PS4 owners is nice, though. R...

Yep, these hidden nuggets are what are going to keep me coming back to this one. Just learnt that Genji's deflect can counter Hanzo's ultimate dragon-Scott Pilgrim rip-off; that's going to be a game-changer next time I log on.

Re: Overwatch
Decided to pick this up on a whim as I've been home from work due to illness for a couple of days. It's a fun game, but as with so many team-based shooters the amount of fun depends on the other players that you're matched up with. I've had some brilliantly balanced games, with players changing thei...

Re: The Sony news and discussion thread
So PS4K or PS4 Neos is a thing, thats awesome. I'm happy as larry with it personally. I bought my PS4 at launch and with 3 years of gameplay and a reasonable trade in deal, I don't mind 200 euro or so for an upgrade. Not everyone seems to be as mellow with it though. As someone with less than a yea...

Re: SoP submissions *please read first post*
I see that someone else has raised Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, but I can't recall hearing it come up on the show so far. It's difficult to choose one track from what, in my opinion, is one of the finest musical scores of the past ten years (across all media) but I've gone for the closing track....
