Re: Elden Ring
I find the incredulity quite odd, to be honest. It's completely understandable to me why people rank and categorise, it happens millions of times every day at almost every moment, it's a feature of the human brain, and it's a very short step from comparing and contrasting. It's an expression of pref...

Hmm...KissMammal wrote: ↑February 26th, 2022, 10:40 pm Game world is drab, lifeless and boring, just one set of inhospitable looking ruins after another. Zero variety to the visuals or gameplay. None of the joy of exploration that I experienced in BotW.

Re: What's Out This Week?
Defo up for GT7, I think Sport was one of the great overlooked games of last gen, but Sifu, HFW and Elden Ring has already made this an expensive few weeks. Might pick it up once I'm done with them (or just get it day one).

Re: Elden Ring
The beauty of the glass cannon build is that I feel I've got a chance against anything I come across now, I just need to be completely on it with the dodging because everything big will one shot me. It feels great to be melting the mini bosses with a handful of casts, though. The fights are more dan...

Re: Elden Ring
That's absolutely fair. I should say again that I only mentioned BotW because it was brought up by KM in a 'this is better because...' comparison. BotW is one of my favourite games ever and one which changed the open world genre for good. The criticisms levelled at ER aren't accurate. It's not reall...

Re: Elden Ring
Not hyperbolic at all, just very positive. I said it's superior to BotW in certain respects (variety, density, unique elements of the world) and that BotW is equally special in different ways (which I didn’t specify). I only referenced BotW because KM made the comparison - and one which was amusing ...

Re: Elden Ring
Compared to Elden Ring, there's almost nothing to do or explore in HFW. As commented on TCGS this week, Horizon feels like a set. ER feels like a place. The palette is more muted than HFW's saturated look but the art direction is arguably the best in the industry. The enemy designs, clothing, weapon...

Re: Elden Ring
You only saw a tiny glimpse of what the world has to offer and it's far far more dense, varied and full of life than BotW. In fact, it shows up how much of that game was one small pool of ideas pasted ad infinitum across the map. As I say, I was very gentle in dealing with your criticisms, most of w...

Re: Elden Ring
Just realised I didn't see the tutorial so didn't know how to do the guard counter for about fifteen hours. Now totally making up for lost time. I love how sometimes it'll grab the enemy in and set them up for another attack, kind of like wing chun kung fu. It's like Scorpion's 'get over here!' I've...

Re: Elden Ring
grrr souls I feel for you because these games can be frustrating and obtuse. Much of what you said isn't accurate in my experience but I just want to say first that I sympathise. It's about learning the rhythm of combat in these games. They're much less about reactions than knowledge and patience. ...

Re: Elden Ring
So difficult to post anything about this game without spoiling the many, many, many surprises and amazing locations and enemies and fights. There's no way I will spoil anything at all but what I mean is there's so much fantastic stuff to talk about. I'm basically a glass cannon astrologer build, fou...

Re: Elden Ring
The one thing I'm not keen on so far is how the way you swap to two handing a weapon is no longer simply just pressing triangle or Y. The added press of Y plus left or right shoulder button means that in the heat of the battle, switching between one and two handing a sword is just slightly less nat...

Re: Elden Ring
What did people choose as a starting item? I went for the Golden Seed, seemed an obvious toss up between that and the medallion which increases HP, but the seed seemed more valuable to me. Same here. The game seems a little more generous than the Souls games with the flask power ups or maybe I got ...

Re: Elden Ring
Have you explored the cave with the wolves in near the small pond with poison creatures near the start? I've been in there but didn't enter what I assume was a boss chamber, backed out worried I'd gone 'the wrong way'. I think so, there are quite a few tiny underground areas like that I've visited ...

Re: Elden Ring
I've played three hours, hit the first story boss after about half an hour, got my shit pushed in so I buggered off in a different direction and found loads of mad stuff elsewhere. I've got a couple of quite unusual weapons but not got the stats for them yet but tempted. I went for Astrologer and qu...

I'm in work at six tomorrow so seriously considering going to bed at 8 and getting up at 2 to have a few hours before I leave. I would defo do it if I weren't too hyped up to sleep. On the other hand, I don't want to be fucked tomorrow evening when I might get another chance, though that's not yet c...

Re: Shmups
I may pick it up on PS4 (5) but I don't like the other Cresta games especially and it's not my kind of shmup. Nevertheless, I buy basically every shmup console release to support the genre. Separately, LiveWire liked my Futari request post a while ago - I'm really really badly hoping that has some s...
