Re: The videogame music thread - share your favourite tunes here

Mystical Ninja starring Goemon had some fantastic music. It's a mix between Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time which never quite reaches the heights of either. It's a game set in Japan which references folklore and modern Japan alike and so channels a lot of the same instruments and feel as Okami. However...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

That's exactly it. You can play on the practice machine once a day which gives you 5 free plays but you can't win any badges. But for every 10 badges you win cumulatively (or the occasional random bonus) you get a free play on other machines.

Re: Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

I bought the DS version with the book a while back but due to my limited Japanese it's been relegated to my "games to play when I/to improve my Japanese level. That being said even if I never get back round to it I won't regret my purchase. The few hours I played was inventive an fun and lookin...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've started playing the free to play 3DS badge collector and it's pretty great. It's essentially a UFO catcher (one of those arcade crane games) except you win stickers for your 3DS menu screen some of which have functions such as replacing the settings button. Sure, the badges are purely cosmetic ...

Re: Nintendo NX

One thing that is fun to speculate on is what technology Nintendo is using now that will be fleshed out for the NX. You often see peripheral technology and redesigns used later on and it almost feels like sometimes they have gotten to a certain point in research and development and want to release i...

Re: Our next podcast recording: The Legend of Zelda

Once you get past the first few dungeons in Link to the Past I'm kind of surprised you'd have to save scum. You have a fairly generous amount of heart containers and with bottled fairies it's not often you'll see the game over screen. I'm also confused about the limited fast travel comments consider...

Re: Our next podcast recording: The Legend of Zelda

My first zelda was link to the past and I later returned to this one more as a curiosity than anything else. The first few times it didn't really stick. I was aimless and because you start off with so little life, making progress was difficult. It was difficult to know if you were even making any pr...

Consoles built around specific games

I was recently reading this excellent interview on the design of the NES from USgamer. http://www.usgamer.net/articles/nes-creator-masayuki-uemura-on-the-birth-of-nintendos-first-console One thing that stuck out for me is that the famiclm was initially designed to be able to run Donkey Kong with par...

Re: Whatcha Been Playing?

I've just got Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP as it's on sale at the moment. I mostly got it for the Rondo of Blood original (never played) and Symphony of the Night (just played recently for the first time) though I'm working my way through the 3D version first. It's pretty fun and I l...

Re: Nintendo NX

They use X to mean crossover a lot in Japan. See Street Fighter X Tekken, Project X Zone, Monster Hunter X all of which have the X pronounced as cross.

I wouldn't be surprised if the X in NX refers to the same with the rumours of it being a hybrid; a cross of handheld and home console.
