30/12 - The Walking Dead: A New Frontier - Episode 1: Ties That Bind Part I (Xbox One)

I thought it was a good start to the series, it also ran and looked great on the Xbox One. It is a step up graphically from their Batman series.

Excellent, glad you enjoyed it. Funny that the criticisms you had of the games were things that I really liked about it! I enjoyed the slow pace of just walking everywhere, I think it really helped with the immersion of being trapped on the island. I loved that there were whole groups of puzzles you wouldn't have a clue about how to solve, but then hours later a light bulb went off in your head and you thought, "hang on, those puzzles by the house, I can do them now!"

I really liked the Tetris and sound puzzles, too. In fact the only ones I really didn't enjoy were the column ones right at the end, as like you I was eager to finish by that point.

I loved the way the game messed with your expectations of how to solve puzzles, and just when you thought you'd got it figured it would throw in another rule to trip you up. Some of my favourite puzzle sets had about 5 or 6 different rulesets in place by the end.

Out of interest, did you find any of the...
Spoiler: show
...hex puzzles that unlocked the video clips in the underground cinema? Or the environmental puzzles, the most obvious of which you spot when stood on the mountain top looking down at the river? Did you unlock all the lasers pointing towards the mountain? Just wondered really.
All in all, I just loved the sense of mystery the island had about it. Where were we? What are all these stone statues? Why do some of them link up if you look at the right angle? Who made them? Where is everyone? And precisely none of these questions ever get answered. Say what you like about Jon Blow, I think the guy is a genius, and for me personally, he's got a 100% record of making 10/10 games. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.

My new years resolution last year was to complete a game a week and blog my thoughts. While I completely failed to keep up the blog, (I think I managed 2 posts) and stay to one game a week, I did manage to finish 52 games. 13 of which were in December. I am going to try the same challenge again this year but which I much higher focus on clearing my massive backlog. Anyway, here are all the games I finished in 2016:

Shadows of mordor
Broken sword 5

Entwined
Gone home

I beat 68 games this year. I think that's largely due to the fact that I played a lot of shorter, older games. I actually spent more time playing games in 2015, but due to the length of some of those games (Dark Souls, Persona 3 and Persona Q), the overall number was shorter.

I don't think I'll ever be able to play 68 games in one year again, so I'm thankful I got to do it this time around!

Yep I found 3 of the videos, the first and second and the last and I found a bunch of the puzzles in the enviroments the first one was the one atop the mountain and later on I found many hother including the clever one at the town where you had to switch the lights to be able to connect it, but I never found what they were for besides marking those monoliths I guess solving them all would unlock something but I dont know.
But yeah I really liked the visuals of the Island and the mystery of it(especially there's some images that only form if you view from a certain angle, the main one I think is in the threehouse in the burning tree) and I did solve all the lasers at least I think I did,I went up and down that island alot and that's also why I found the traversal limiting because I had already taken the enviroment in and just wanted to go and solve the puzzles,Im also very particular about first person games and I had that I can Jump and that the world has a bunch of invisible walls that kinda of takes me out.

I do agree that the gameplay is expertly designed and that Jonathan Blow certainly has a very especific intent with the game however beats me what it is I'd rather just enjoy it as a good puzzle game same as Braid, though I'll say I enjoyed this way more the Braid. My favorite area is the Greenhouse, there is where I feel the game was strongest because it embodied several thought process you had to acquire throught the game, with perspective, separating the lines and being able to constantly switch what you're thinking(I thought the elevator one genious) I also really liked the Ruins because it used that reflection and perspective really well but man fuck those Tetris blocks! I hated those so much XD

ThirdMan wrote:Shorter games or not, that's still a serious year of gaming! In fact I commend you for playing through so many short games. I find I get very comfortable when playing something like Bloodborne. It's a constant challenge but you're still in a comfort zone of sorts. Every session is more of the same and you grow in confidence. Wheres quickly jumping from game to game, from genre to genre, from system to system, takes a different type of passion and commitment. Well done!
Ha ha, thanks man! And man I hope I can get a PS4 soon and take on Bloodborne. I'm watching Alex's comments on the Bloodborne thread and just getting jealous :D

Yeah, it really reminded me of the original Donkey Kong Country. It put Returns on my Wishlist.
