05/11 - Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition (NG+, Apocalyptic mode)

Had this playthrough of the game going on in the background for a while, just chipping away at it between other stuff when I can't think of anything else to play. Just finished off the last DLC and final boss today. Still as fun as ever. Noticed some strange stuff this time though. The game is buggy as hell as is (or at least the PC version), but as time went on in to NG+, it started getting even buggier. While there was the usual minor shadows/graphical glitches as before, I noticed a few trigger bugs this time around, which ended up escalating in to some pretty bad stuff. There was a bug where autosaving didn't trigger after finishing the DLC campaigns, making them un-completeable. Luckily I managed to get around it with the first DLC, but no such luck with the second. So even though I've finished it, I could never hand in the final quest to get it off my quest log. Didn't have that problem with the last DLC, but I did get an issue where after a short scripted event, it spawned me up on top of a piece of scenery that I shouldn't have been able to get to, and the path to move forward that was opened up through the event was inaccessible by an invisible wall. Game crashed shortly thereafter.

But hey, whatever. Still a great game that I love coming back to, even if the final boss if a bit anticlimactic. The final DLC boss is pretty great though, so I suppose that makes up for it. I seem to have gotten in to the habit of playing the Darksiders games in rotation, so I suppose the next thing to do is go play the "Warmastered" edition of the first game. Not played that one yet, despite being given it for owning the original version on PC.

Credits rolled, at around 200 moons. Still a lot of game to go for sure, but I suspect it’ll be shorter sessions on it for me now. The post credits stuff is definitely harder.

I was pretty down on this for most of playthrough, not because it’s bad because it’s not. But because it was... safe. I guess. It’s not a hard game, the intent is that everyone should be able to get to the end of the story. It’s clever, but it’s not really ever doing anything radical (outside of one or two moments).

I guess after seeing the reinvention of the format Breath of the Wild brought to Zelda I was perhaps expecting more from this than was ever going to be there.

The last couple of worlds before the end though it felt like it was picking up. It starts to combine ideas, has a run of visually striking sections and then... well, that would be spoiling it.

It’s a great game. Probably my favourite since the SNES days. But it’s sitting behind several others in my 2017 list at the moment.

06/11 - Super Mario Odyssey

What a fantastic game! By far the the most fun I've ever had with any mainline Mario game. Full of inventiveness and positivity that makes exploring its worlds such a joy. It really got me hooked, wondering what amazing place I would stumble across next, and what weird and amusing things I would find there. That's one thing that drew me to this one over most other Mario games, is that they weren't afraid to be a bit odd with this one. In ways that you would expect wouldn't work with the Mario aesthetic, but they somehow make it work. The juxtaposition actually adds to the charm.

To play of course it was great too. Does a great job of rewarding curiosity, making you want to try new things out and see if you can pull stuff off. Although, I'm probably still far from legitimately good at this sort of game, it was fun all the same. Even though the controls are obviously very well polished, I did have a bit of trouble adjusting to them at times. Mostly down to inexperience I expect, but Mario did sometimes feel like he accelerated faster than I would expect, yet his top speed is slower than expected too, as well as having pretty tight/twitchy controls at that speed. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just something that for some reason didn't feel immediately "right" to me.

The only one minor criticism I might have about the game is less about the game itself, but rather the marketing. Most of the best worlds were shown in pre-release footage. I was hoping for a few more surprises, especially once I started getting near the end of the game, and I was still seeing stuff I knew about beforehand. There was still a lot of fun surprises though, and I found the last two worlds were among the most enjoyable, both of which were not spoiled by Nintendo thankfully.

I ended up with 285 moon by the end of the game. I'll probably continue playing a bit more, just to see what new things I can open up, but I probably won't be playing it much longer in to the future. I'm not going after every moon, and doubt I would be able to anyway. What I played was more than satisfying already too.

Hey Scrustle - your game, your time and all that - but while I’m happy you’ve enjoyed SMO so much, with 285 moons and the first credit roll you’ve literally seen about one quarter of what the game has to offer (arguably the weaker quarter too).

I strongly recommend playing on!

I'm definitely going back for more. I just don't expect I'll get anywhere near 100%-ing it. Excited to hear that it only gets better though. Definitely makes the idea of going back sound more appealing.

17 Sep: The Witness (PlayStation 4)
23 Sep: Day of the Tentacle (PlayStation 4)
10 Oct: Morphite (Review copy - Xbox One)

A very bog standard No Man's Sky-like cash-in. Not an entirely bad one, and it makes an attempt at a story. Some of the worst voice acting I've heard in quite a while though. It all starts to feel like pointless randomly generated busywork very quickly.

21st Oct: Alien Isolation (Xbox One)

So this was the subject of the podcast for my first ever co-hosting gig. Given that the idea of expressing my opinions and putting my voice on the airwaves was terrifying, I naturally chose to join in right when we were playing a horror game... and I normally can't stand them. Isolation broke something deep inside of me. I've always found horror in all media forms more boring than terrifying, but since playing Isolation I jump at everything and have terrible nightmares. So that's... good? Effective, at least. And enjoyable in the end - I felt proud of myself for getting through it, especially as I also managed to grab the achievement for never dying. Another thing I probably shouldn't have attempted when I was already so nervous, but there we go.

30 Oct: Gone Home Console Edition (Xbox One - 100% achievements)

I can't believe I ignored this for so long. It's now easily in my top 20 games of all time. I found the story deeply and personally affecting, and I adored the continual subversion of your expectations as you pick up narrative clues. I finished the game with a big grin on my face and maybe even a little tear in my eye. I've become a big softie. Again, probably Alien's fault.

31st Oct: Tacoma (Xbox One - 100% achievements)

I felt guilty about not playing Gone Home until it was free, so I made up for it by immediately buying Tacoma at full price. Not remotely as affecting as Gone Home in my opinion but still an interesting narrative carefully delivered. I think the main issue is that in Gone Home, nothing gets in the way of getting to know its limited cast extremely well - discovering their character arcs IS the story. Tacoma has a lot of sci-fi plotting going on and maybe a couple too many characters, so we end up not getting to know them as well. It also has some woeful visual tearing that I was hoping would be patched so far beyond release, when people first complained. Oh well. Still enjoyable. Can't wait for more from Fullbright.

31st Oct: Fragments of Him (Xbox One - 100% achievements)

On the flip side, here's a tale with similar themes to Gone Home that is simply terrible. Utterly flawed approach to storytelling, neither drawing the player in or allowing them to discover it for themselves. Bland low-poly presentation, most of it in muddy grey tones, and unforgivable loading times for something so simple. It's trash - don't bother.

01st Nov: The Sexy Brutale (Xbox One - 100% achievements)

I can't decide whether I liked this game or not. It's got some wonderful twists and the central Groundhog Day mechanic is neat, but some of the execution is so clunky. The effects sound like they were recorded in a bathroom, there's a lot of technical hiccups every time you open a door (and you open a LOT of doors), and there's something a bit slapdash about the art style too. Definitely a good game for discussion.

02nd Nov: Microsoft Solitaire Collection (Android - 100% achievements)

Well. What can we say? Solid, well executed... Solitaire. Can't knock the classics.

07 Nov: Super Lucky's Tale (Review Copy, Xbox One - 100% achievements)

I picked this one up to review purely because I was jealous of all of you bastards cooing over Mario on a platform I can't currently justify purchasing. It's pretty good, but good Lord someone needs to inject Lucky with some personality. He feels committee-designed, sanitised to the point of oblivion. Good one to play with young kids though.

I hadn't played Gears 4 before now. The release of the Xbox One X seemed like a perfect time to rectify that. Of the two graphics options, I opted for the 'Performance' mode (1080p/60fps, upscaled to 4K) over the 'Visuals' mode (native 4K/30fps, I think). It looked exceptionally good, and played much more smoothly at the higher framerate, to my eye.

Now that my Digital Foundry moment has passed, I really enjoyed Gears 4. It's nuts and bolts Gears, with a couple of nice additions, but after a 4-year absence, that was enough. I say "4 years", but I did try the Ultimate Edition of the original when it came to Xbox One, and was surprised how little I enjoyed replaying the first hour or two of it. Gears 4, then, in some ways, lives up to my memory of the 2006 series beginnings, but without its decade-old foibles.

Finally beat a demon from my youth after not having touched this game for nearly 30 years. Thoughts on the podcast!
