Overall, I found 2013's Tomb Raider reboot something of a mixed bag. Iffy story, turgid QTE and linear cinematic sequences, and a last act that sagged quite badly, but mechanically, I was rather taken with the crafting, stealth and traversal. So when, nearly two years ago, I found the opening hours of Rise... to be more of the same, I had little hesitation in bringing my time with it to a premature end.

Oh, that new console smell! The Xbox One X enhancements convinced me to give Rise Of The Tomb Raider another shot. Even if I wasn't going to be bowled over by the game itself, it would showcase my shiny, new console. I was not disappointed. The game is great in all the ways its predecessor was, and a slog for many of the same reasons too.

So, there it is. The Xbox One X has many folks, myself included, playing games we otherwise might not, and enjoying them (despite flaws) for the crispy, shiny graphical upgrades the new hardware provides. Every new console has its launch day games, and the Xbox One X is no different. Rise Of The Tomb Raider does look amazing though! ;)

This is going to be my first Xbox One X experience as well. Owned the game since launch but just never got round to it for some reason (and enjoyed the original reboot a little more than you James by the sounds of it).

Out of interest what graphical mode did you pick? I understand there are a few to choose from, including native 4K, performance/60 fps etc.

I've had a good go at the trial and enjoyed looking at lights and dark bits and stuff. I do think the game is pretty generic, and I won't be buying it full price but I expect it'll pop up on sale for Black Friday, along with some more X enhanced titles.

Jan - Titanfall 2 (XO)
Feb - Mass Effect 3 (X360 via XO)
Jun - TLOZ: Breath Of The Wild (Switch)
Jul - Football Manager 2017 (iOS)
Aug - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch)
Aug - Gears of War 4 (XO)
Sep - Severed (Vita)
Sep - Forza Horizon (XO)
Oct - Uncharted 4 (PS4 Pro)

Nov - Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

Had my first credits roll in Odyssey last night with 234 moons in the bank. Obviously a huge amount to do and go back for!

It’s been an incredibly fun experience from start to finish with a level of inventiveness rarely seen outside of.....well, other Mario games!

It’s also a real audio visual treat - the music has some truly joyful compositions and graphically Mario and his world have simply never looked better. My only slight regret with the visuals (and this is nit picking) is that due to the Switch’s modest power we can’t be enjoying them at a higher res in this day and age. I’m no resolution pedant but it’s not hard to imagine how incredible the beautiful art and animation would look at even just 1080p. Particularly in handheld mode at 720 it’s not the cleanest of images, while draw distance also takes a hit. Still, the great design shines through and the frame rate is a pretty rock solid 60fps which is obviously of far greater importance.

My only other issue, which I know has been raised by others both here and elsewhere, is the level of challenge on offer. This game is a joy to play, no doubt, but it’s also a bit of a cake walk. Very, very rarely did I have any trouble progressing, and while Mario has always been an accessible series it’s also never shied away from offering a stern test of one’s platforming prowess. In Odyssey the challenge is almost exclusively in hunting down the power moons, scouring the environments for hints and solving the many ‘how on earth do I get over there?’ scenarios. It’s a particularly frustrating problem for the game given that we know Nintendo are more than capable of delivering exactly the kind of challenge that Odyssey lacks, and I’d love to know why they’ve made the design choice to make things quite so straight forward. It really it’s the one thing that keeps Odyssey from perfect 10 status for me.

I don’t want to sound down on this game though, as I’m really not - it’s great. A wonderful, lovely thing that all Switch owners simply must buy. It’s just maybe not game of the year material this time round. That’s probably Zelda though, so I’m sure Nintendo won’t be too upset!

A lot of the end platform areas feel cheap and designed to make you lose all your lives. If you want to go back to the old Sonic games, don't, go play Mania.

Doki Doki Literature Club - Mac

There's soooooo much I love about this game, and soooo much I want to say about it. But hyperbole is something that turns me off trying something, so I will just sum up the experience in one word: sublime.

It's a visual novel, and due to it's narrative nature I can't risk spoilers. All I will say is:
Spoiler: show
Really? You couldn't help but click here and see what I really had to say about the game? A little restraint people... if you want to know about it, don't read about it: play it! I'm not going to give anything away.

And stop ruining experiences for yourself by clicking in these clearly marked "spoiler" spaces! You only get to experience a first time with something once.

And I will end this recommendation by saying, if you like visual novels: then get it. If you don't: seriously?

You can get the game for PC or Mac from itch.io, Steam, or from the official website. You do have the option to download it for free. I paid $10 (US), and with that I got the soundtrack, wallpapers, and a little PDF/ebook about the creation of the game.

Also, I paid for this because I want to support games and creators like this. Vote with your money.

Modern take on old school on shorty bang bangs. Amazing game play though I think I preferred wolfenstine which is cut from the same cloth but had the surprising bonus of having a really well written story.

I opted for the middle graphical mode, that balanced resolution and framerate. Might've been called 'Enriched 4K'? I figured that it would offer a dynamic resolution, upscaled to 4K, but with a smoother framerate than the native 4K mode. I did much the same for Gears Of War 4, although there were only two options in that game.

You're in for a treat with Rise Of The Tomb Raider on Xbox One X; it really is a quite lovely-looking game. :geek:

I can imagine! I remember thinking how nice RoTR looked on the base Xbox One back in 2015. Sadly I found it thoroughly uninspiring in most other ways.

I had half talked myself into a 100% completion of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and then I awoke to find 5 hours of last night's progress missing from my save file. That's a pretty surefire way to help me move immediately on to the sequel. Bravo, Traveller's Tales!

In the interval, I decided to run through one of last month's Games With Gold games, Gone Home. I hadn't played it since its original release on PC back in 2013. Every bit the game I remembered it to be. So much so, that I half talked myself into clearing up all 1000G. That is, until the 1-minute speedrun achievement resolutely would not unlock, and I found out it can be glitched for some people. It's days like this one that could give an otherwise philosophical chap a case of paranoia! :|

Bound(Ps4)- So this game was free for Ps plus and I decided to try it, weirdly enough while I played I couldnt stop thinking about Abzu, the reason I think is that it's a competent game that's gorgeous to look at but tries to ape Journey and ends up falling short, and that is more or less what I think of Bound as well, not saying it's trying to ape Journey like Abzu was but there are certain beats that are similar(including one that they repeat ad-nauseum taking all the power away from a cool sequence at the end)
To be fair the game is trying to be a little bit more of a "traditional" game and it puts emphasis on plataforming which is the worse idea they had because the actual jumping feels awfull in this game, it's loose and you dont have nearly enough control and precision which kill any enjoyment out of any precision jump, it sucks because you dont think the level design is terrible and I was actually surprised by how much there was to it, for example there was one level that I nailed a certain jump and I skipped most of the level, there's also a level select that allows you to tackle the game in whichever order you want allowing you pick "power-ups" that nullify hazards in other stages which open the way for you to explore other stages.
There's alot more here gameplaywise then what I expected but unfortunally none of that matters because of how bad the jumping is so I just stopped trying to do plataforming and just waltzed through the rest of the game to see the visuals.

I know this doesnt count but I also watched the entirety of Doki Doki Literature club, I think it's a pretty neat game that the internet as usual has run into the ground by claiming it to be the second coming of Jesus Christ, I also think it only really appeals to people that are familiar and like the visual novel/dating sim genre and overall it's a pretty limited game in comparison to other games like it, the only thing that make this one stand out is because of it's VN format, still some pretty solid writing there and at the very least I have a new twitter profile to follow XD

Recently completed Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - Vita, and much like Doki Doki Literature Club, it was a game that I actually played and interacted with, and not just a video I passively watched then formed an opinion of! ;) Puhuhu!

I'm currently playing though School Mode (which unlocks after a play-through), so clearly it's a game that has it's hooks into me. Being narrative focused I will avoid any and all spoilers, so if it's something you'll think you want to experience, then perhaps you should. The recent PS4 Reload release is pretty good value. I ended up buying both this and the sequel ages ago, simply because both were on sale, and I prefer these types of experience in my Vita (great little beast).

Of course, it's not a flawless experience. Here are two suggestions to make it perfect:

1. Just because this in a single player experience, doesn't mean it shouldn't have a mandatory persistent online connection. Everyone loves that.

2. Loot boxes. People love micro-transactions on top of paying full retail price for the base game. I struggle to think of a single example of that failing in any way.

If only this game would learn from the likes of EA, it would be the perfect experience. Shame really... Puhuhu!

Doki Doki Literature Club(PC)[All routes- true ending]-

I did this because I wanted to, not because I needed to prove anything to anybody, that would be stupid.

Joking aside if Im honest I did enjoy the game more by playing it instead of just watching it, if anything the horror aspect was certainlly more effective ,my general sentiment is the same but taking my time and exploring everything there's is to do really made me appreciatte the game more, the true ending that I hadnt seen really did elevate the whole thing for me, I wish I could elaborate more but you know how it is.

Farpoint (PSVR)

This game is a poster child for PSVR - the holy grail for PSVR enthusiasts earlier this year was the Farpoint + Aim Controller (the rifle-like controller) bundle, which was very hard to get hold of due to stock shortages. That said, there seems to be a gulf of opinion between say, the PSVR Reddit community, and the actual reviews of the game, a lot of which put it in the 6.5/10 category.

I'm conflicted. The first half of the game is basically shooting spiders on a Mars-like planet, and is a trudge through a very tight and barely-disguised corridor (canyons). It does pick up significantly in the second half of the game, but as a gaming experience it is pretty basic.

As a VR gaming experience, it is slightly elevated by the action-packed second half. It was definitely less immersive than Resident Evil 7, and at times I was conscious of it being less virtual reality and more 'flat screen gaming viewed through swimming goggles'. Part of this was that all enemies attacked head on from the front, nothing attacked from behind.

I didn't have the Aim Controller, and you still had to lift the DS4 up to your eye to aim through the weapon sights, which was novel.

Spoiler: show

18th January Infinite Warfare Xbox One

Easily my favourite Call Of Duty Campaign I've played (FYI I have not played Black OPs 2 or 3). Great fun for a franchise that isn't usually my cup of tea.

23rd Jan

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 2

Brilliant however I do feel that my decisions are based on my previous experiences with Clem which are not relevant here. If you've played it you'll know what I mean. But it is fantastic.

The Bunker

Probably the worst game I have played this gen. Awful, awful game. I can only best describe it as a videogame made by people who have never played videogames. Everything about it was bad. Infuriating controls, instafail sections that were pure luck that you passed. I wouldn't even recommend downloading it when it appears on PS+ or Games With Gold.

Would be a great Cane And Rinse Episode though :)

Resident Evil 7 Playstation 4

Really enjoy it and would recommend

17th Feb Doom Xbox One

Solid 8/10 for me. It outstayed its welcome but was fun none the less

Bioshock Remastered PS4

Glad I've finally ticked this off my pile of shame after all these years. The last boss reminded me of Metroid Primes final boss for some reason. Looking forward to listening to the show now.

March 3Rd

Batman Arkham VR

Very good, just wish there was more of it!

Rez Infinite PSVR

Acts 1-4 were amazing but I thought 5 was a bit of a let down. I obviously miss the point of it somehow

Area X is absolutely amazing though and apart from a bit in Arkham my highlight of PSVR so far. Would love a game based on Area X

The Walking Dead The New Frontier Season 3 Episode 3.

Quite disappointed in this episode I have to say. There was great momentum, cast and story built up in the two episodes previous and an excellent cliff hanger which fizzles out in episode 3. I was most annoyed about a character becoming pissed off with me when I killed someone instead of letting them turn

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 4

Telltale have lost the plot this series. Some of the choices in this episode are absolutely ridiculous, I actually let one run out as I didn't feel able to make it leading to a game over screen. I'm happy to be proved wrong but I'm pretty sure they've never tied that to a major decision before?, mind you I have always never shied from making any decisions. Clementine might as well not be there and one scene with her left me scratching my head as the way she acts in that is something that ''my'' Clementine would never even think about let alone want to do what is discussed.

What Remains Of Edith Finch

An interesting "game", I enjoyed it in parts but also had a few questions left at the end of it. I think I'd better play Gone Home now for some kind of comparison.

Gone Home

It was alright, I've preferred What Remains Of Edith Finch and Virginia to be honest. I'll download the show now.

Injustice 2 PS4

Jolly good fun. I enjoyed the story in 1 more but that doesn't mean I'm saying this has a bad story. Combat is better than 1, looking forward to seeing what the extra stuff involves and deciding who to use online.

May 30th The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 5

Dreadful end to a really, really disappointing season. I have no idea what Telltale were thinking during this season it has been all over the place. The first two episodes they released back to back were excellent but it just goes to pieces in episode 3. Real shame as there were some good characters in there. I would not recommend unless cheap and I'm a huge fan of season 1 and 2. There will be a season 4 and I won't be rushing to pick this up like I have every season so far.

There was no point Clem being in it at all being brutally honest. Her story ark doesn't even get resolved. Annoyed!

August 1st Horizon Zero Dawn.

My game of the year so far. Not played anything else really since picking it up. Amazing. Looking forward to the DLC now.

AUGUST 11TH UNTIL DAWN

Great fun. I replayed the final chapter again to get the ''best'' ending I'll pop more details in the thread. Recommend

August 18th Telltale Batman Season Two Episode One

Carrying on from an excellent season one, this wasn't brilliant it was just good. They've set up several plot points going ahead. One of the main changes is the relationships with characters. Through your actions as Bruce/Batman your relationship will strengthen/weaken leading to different things happening. Need episode 2 now please

Oxenfree 24th August

There's a good game and an interesting story in there somewhere but it takes far too long to get there. Would be an interesting C&R show. I wouldn't recommend it, I was thoroughly confused at the end as I must've missed some of the story. So the ghosts were submarine crew killed by friendly fire?, still not sure even now if someone can confirm that is right that would be great. It would make a great Netflix series

I somehow ended up saving everyone. Nona got with Ren and Clarissa was with the now alive Michael and Jonas had now just ''moved'' to town with his Dad. No idea how I managed that. I basically told the ghosts to stop being pricks and everyone was saved. Very close to letting them have Clarissa though

August 25th. Two Telltale Episodes

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 3

Still funny

Guardians Of The Galaxy Episode 1

Nails the vibe of the film well and the voice acting is good as I was worried it would be a bit jarring it not being the same as the film. Interested to see where this goes.

August 28th Firewatch.

Would recommend, right amount of length I would've liked You given the option of talking to Ned to get him to come with you at the end and he would've chosen depending on how you have acted through the game

August 31st. Life Is Strange Before The Storm. Episode One.

Quite a slow paced episode and good references to LIS. Good start. If you're a fan of LIS you've probably already got it.

September 1st. Windjammers Arcade Mode 1 credit

What an absolute classic this game is, plays as well as it did in the arcades. Won my first online match too!
November 2nd Life Is Strange Before The Storm Episode 2.

Amazing again. It really benefits from not having the time travel stuff and a great cliff hanger too
November 20th. Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds.

Amazing. Loved being back in that world. Great example of DLC. It has a couple of new machines, an interesting enough story, some great missions and a good link to the main quest too. Snowy setting was great to play around in as well.
