Overall, I found 2013's Tomb Raider reboot something of a mixed bag. Iffy story, turgid QTE and linear cinematic sequences, and a last act that sagged quite badly, but mechanically, I was rather taken with the crafting, stealth and traversal. So when, nearly two years ago, I found the opening hours of Rise... to be more of the same, I had little hesitation in bringing my time with it to a premature end.
Oh, that new console smell! The Xbox One X enhancements convinced me to give Rise Of The Tomb Raider another shot. Even if I wasn't going to be bowled over by the game itself, it would showcase my shiny, new console. I was not disappointed. The game is great in all the ways its predecessor was, and a slog for many of the same reasons too.
So, there it is. The Xbox One X has many folks, myself included, playing games we otherwise might not, and enjoying them (despite flaws) for the crispy, shiny graphical upgrades the new hardware provides. Every new console has its launch day games, and the Xbox One X is no different. Rise Of The Tomb Raider does look amazing though!
