Games completed 2017
Re: Games completed 2017
Pyre(pc)- I noticed not alot of people have talked about this game, in fact I dont think i've seen anyone in this forum even say they played it despite the fact that Bastion and transistor were pretty popular, I wonder if people felt a little bit too thrown off by the whole sports game aspect.
At first I wasnt enjoying the game, I didnt really care for the gameplay this convoluted sport didnt make much sense , the characters and story didnt really connect with me and even the music which is usually fantastic just seemed ok, the only aspect that impressed me was how it looked. It didnt help that the game really railroads you in the beginning, in order to introduce all the mechanics and world but it certainlly didnt help, once the game opens up though I started to like it alot more, I started to see all the layer of strategies in the gameplay and how to best use characters, the story got more interesting, I actually started to liking most of the cast but the more interesting aspect was how your choices started to have meaningfull consequences in a way I didnt really expect but thought was pretty clever.
In the end I actually like the game, more then i thought I would, but despite the fact that this might be the most replayable game by supergiant, given how your choices lead to many different outcomes, I have no desire to play it again and to me this is the weakest game they've made yet, while I think the gameplay was well made and there's clearlly depth to it especially when you start to factor in all the different type of characters you can have the sports game aspect isnt super appealing to me and while the story is good it isnt anything mindblowing or incredibly original and having to go through that beginning again just to see a few different outcomes just isnt worth it.
Im glad that this game exists and that Supergiant tried something different(while still keeping some of the same staples of previous games, I mean they really like optional challenges that give you more rewards XD)and I hope they keep trying different stuff.

Yeah, it was a hard pass for me despite liking their previous two games. The sports thing put me off and also.....I went back to Bastion (which I loved on release) last year and it didn't do much for me second time round. Transistor was interesting but a bit dull, and that ending That left me personally with an abiding sense that the games were all fur coat and no knickers, and with the sports thing sounding a bit gimmicky.....Todinho wrote: ↑December 15th, 2017, 2:53 pm Pyre(pc)- I noticed not alot of people have talked about this game, in fact I dont think i've seen anyone in this forum even say they played it despite the fact that Bastion and transistor were pretty popular, I wonder if people felt a little bit too thrown off by the whole sports game aspect.

Bleed is a long-time personal fave, so I didn't hesitate picking it up when it was released on Xbox One back in August. Heck, I pre-ordered Bleed 2 on Xbox One a month ago, and it's not out until February. I can't think of another XBLIG game that impressed me as much as Bleed. Back in 2012, Bleed was an incredible surprise, and it hasn't changed (or diminished) a bit.
If it pops up on Xbox One or Steam sale this holiday period, I honestly can't recommend it highly enough. What is it, you ask? A fast and hectic twin-stick 2D action-platformer.
Exactly.

I enjoyed it a lot. I was ready to be finished at the end, but I enjoyed it.Whippledip wrote: ↑December 14th, 2017, 9:04 pmI clocked 103 hours on mine, although admittedly I kinda skipped the voice acting for a lot of the dialogue after the casino palace because there was a ton of long explanation and exposition.
What did you think of it?
I really appreciated being able to play a big budget turn based RPG on the PS4, rather than on a handheld and it was cool to see so many of the SMT demon designs (Mara!) on a big screen after the last gen's titles all being handheld.
The story was good, though I don't think the soundtrack was as good as P3 or P4.
It was worth my time and I'm really, really looking forward to SMT V on the Switch.

Arizona Sunshine (PSVR)
This started off on the wrong foot as it took me some time to get used to the controls, but rounded out into a very enjoyable game. It's not difficult, apart from maybe one section, but covered a decent number of levels and environments and had some rudimentary and very funny character progression. Very enjoyable!
Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy
Tailed off in the end, with a bit of a dull final chapter, but I liked everything about this. Very enjoyable!!
Superhot (PSVR)
Wow. Ascends into the pantheon of great PSVR games (Resi 7, Statik) straight away. Super original and the VR implementation is wonderful. I'm in bits today from all the dodging and weaving and double-Uzi wielding. Very enjoyable!!!

17th December - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; Champions Ballad DLC (Wii U)
Completed the Champions Ballad DLC tonight, bar a bit of the armour. I'd say it's very good, but not amazing.
Adds a slight extra layer to the story of the main quest but nothing revelatory. The new Dungeon is clever, but felt more like a really big shrine to me, though the pay off is good and I did have a couple of 'Yes! I'm clever...' moments completing it.
I quite enjoyed the tough opening act it forces you into beating and finding the hidden shrines on the map was a nice hunt, if more or less a case of just going where the game says.
The 16 new shrines themselves though are excellent. I'd say a few are easily amongst the games finest in fact, and a couple of the challenges you need to do to unearth them are also great fun.
I'd say, if you've put 100 hours in and still want more, then it's worth buying. And the reward is silly but great fun when you're fighting Guardians. But otherwise I don't think it really adds that much to the overall game experience.

Re: Games completed 2017

Open world games are usually so large and time consuming that I have a rule that I only do one a year and I think I made the right choice of making Horizon Zero Dawn the one that I try this year. I loved loved loved this game! I was interested in this ever since the trailer was shown for it at E3 2015. It just looked so different and intriguing from the usual open world fare. Its beautiful, lush post apocalyptic setting is a refreshing contrast from the brown grimy nuclear wastelands that are the bread and butter of this sort of setting. The graphics are drop dead gorgeous even in regular old HD, never mind 4k. Aloy is fun to control and is one of the better woman protagonists I have seen in quite some time. Each mission, even the little errands all contribute some way to learning about the way this world works, the societies built around it and how the world came to be the way it is. I mean even the cliche of climbing radio towers was done great by the use of scaling Tallnecks, these massive sauropod-like robots with satellite dishes for heads. Speaking of which, the robots are a true highlight of the game. You have a wide range of abilities and tools to tackle them and especially later on in the game, you need to be tactical in how you are going to take them on. The combat system is so rewarding and constantly evolves as the game goes on and the utter adrenalin rush you get when taking on and defeating a true titan such as a Thunderjaw or a Death Bringer is one of the best feeling I have gotten in gaming in a very long time.
I also need to bring up another reason why I kept playing, the story. It tells you the way that the world got to be the way it is through drips and drops throughout the game and I was always pushed on to learn more. Without giving too much away, Horizon addresses something that many end of the world plots in videogames rarely touch upon: the true gravity of a complete mass extinction event and how the loss of biodiversity affects humans in an emotional way. As someone who thinks the current mass extinction crisis is one of the most pressing environmental issues on the planet right now, it was great to see a game explicitly acknowledge this and how a less biodiverse world is a poorer, bleaker world.
This is easily up there with Undertale as the best game I played this year and I am excited as hell to dive into the Frozen Wilds DLC sometime early next year. I definitely want to stay a little bit longer in this dangerous yet beautiful world. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best PS4 exclusives out there and totally justifies the purchase of one , it is essential for anyone who likes open world gameplay, intriguing worlds and clever story telling. My only quibble with the game is that climbing mountains can be tricky sometimes due to some parts can be scalable and others can't and you can end up in a dead end if you climb up the wrong part of the mountain which ended up happening to me on more than a few occasions. Also, Rockbreakers and Glinkhawks can seriously piss off, easily the most frustrating machines to fight in the game. But besides that, absolute must play and a honest classic for this console generation.

Beat the ultra hard levels now too, which took we weeks of intermittent play. Weird, as I'm normally good at Mario games! Enjoyable pay off... Suspect I'll just play it now on Sundays with my kids and mop up the odd moon here and there, bit by bit.

Re: Games completed 2017
I was down to 8-10 hours being the sweet spot for me, and with all the walking sims and VR games, I'm starting to think 3-4 hours is more my speed now Nice post, it really comes across that you enjoyed the experience.
My end of year hit list continues to get targeted, these might be the last I finish now:
Robinson The Journey (PSVR)
Didn't like this much; it was pretty but dull. The best thing it has going for it is the sense of tramping around among giant dinosaurs. It also didn't help that it originally made me sick, to the extent that the main menu screen would cause me to start sweating in anticipation of the nausea to come . I got over this by turning on segmented turning, which seems to work for me generally; it helped and I was able to complete the game several months after I started. They reckon it is the slow walking pace in this one which causes people to be sick, it's a recognised game for it.
Tacoma (PC)
I enjoyed this a lot. Not sure what I can say about it really, but it's an interesting entry in the walking sim genre. I must admit that as time has gone on, I have grown a bit distant from Gone Home - I replayed it this year and it didn't really give me much personally on a second playthrough as I was more aware of the scaffolding holding up the set. This feeling carried over to Tacoma a bit, and I had to force myself to sit down with it this week.
Most impressive is the verisimilitude of the setting - voice acting was very good and the world fleshed out enough through incidental detail to make it rounded and convincing. It is a slight tale, but the amount of effort put in to make it work is really impressive. There are real-world parallels, I am sure, between the tenuous existence of the characters working-for-a-corp-to-pay-off-debt and the current parlous state of US millennials.

This’ll be my last 2017 completion now. I’ve been messing around with and chipping away at Sonic Mania on and off for ages, and finally sat down and saw the credits roll today. Not got all the chaos emeralds yet for a 100% completion, but I’ll be revisiting this for a long time to come so perhaps one day. Overall a wonderful game that’s a real treat for old skool Sonic and platformer fans alike.
The game the Saturn should have had, and probably the best in the series! All involved, take a bow!

Of course not fully completed by far. The ending section is kind of neat and I finally learned how to do the hat throw > dive > mid-air jump thing so I'll keep on playing. These are mostly fun worlds to be in.

Dec 24 - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS)
Another solid Ace Attorney. I don't think anything will ever match Trials and Tribulations, but I'll consume pretty much any AA now.
Dec 24 - Splatoon 2 (Switch)
I could have finished the single player weeks ago but I preferred the multiplayer so much and would just start playing online when I fired up the game. The single player feels a bit slow and plodding in comparison. I'll continue to have many games of turf war in the future with my trusty Aerospray.
Dec 24 -Final Fantasy II (Vita - PSP version)
Oh boy, this felt like a slog for its 22 hours runtime. Coming off the back of Final Fantasy earlier this year probably didn't help either. Most of my battles were just press attack and strategy was only required on some bosses.
Re: Games completed 2017
The letter(Pc)-It might not look like it but it's a pretty long game and it sometimes feels twice it's length because of how much the characters spend think to themselfs but the end I was kinda of skipping through those I mean there are only so many times I can take someone being insecure about themselfs before it gets old, also while I said that the Qtes were good in hindsight I have to go back on that because failing them only leads to a game over you have to redo unlike say Until Dawn where that is another branch and because every QTE is different and you have to do it immediatly so you often die first just so you understand what you're supposed to do.
What liked the most about the game though was how it really shows how hard it is to make branching storylines, having the tree there is really neat as you see they getting more and more complex and it's because there are so many choices but because of the impact the ones there have, it was really fascinating looking at the final tree and how gigantic it is only to see you ignore most of it and seeing how much of that is to account for all the previous choices. Speaking of which the ending I got was rather anticlimatic and it felt pretty rushed, everybody did live though but I almost think that getting a few of them killed would've have made for a more interesting conclusion because you can get some characters killed or worse pretty early on and looking at the tree it affects things tremendously.
Overall I still liked it even though the writing isnt anything amazing and the game isnt top tier in production values, it's this team first game and it shows but like I said it has heart and I couldnt help being won over by it and I do recommend for people interested in horror Visual Novels.

Really, really disappointing sadly!. No idea what they were thinking with this. Had some good scenes but overall a bit of a mess which is strange after the first two were so strong. Think it needed a 4th episode.
