Woah, now this is a game where I am all over the place on. When I first played it I could not get enough of it. Trico was fun to interact with and the puzzles were really satisfying to solve for the most part. I loved the fact that the boy is massively vulnerable to the suits of armour that patrol the area. Having to solve a puzzle while avoiding their gaze were easily some of the most tense moments and the adrenalin rush you get when Trico gets to save your behind by ripping these guys apart was immense. Whenever I got stuck, stopped playing and would solve the puzzle straight away next time. Things were good.....

And then I got around halfway through the game and a lot of problems crept in for me. The few barrel puzzles where you need to throw them in a certain place in order to feed Trico were absolutely misery for me. The finicky controls and atrocious camera in those sections just completely drained my enthusiasm for continuing with this game. I seriously would not touch it for days because I dreaded going through this exercise in torture. But I was determined to finish it and eventually came back to it. Then came the underwater sections, holy shite. The controls for swimming are easily the WORST I have ever come across in a 3D game. The boy is about as easy to control as a lorry on a rope. Just getting him to turn was teeth pulling. At this stage Trico was pissing me off too. Just dive in the goddamn water so we can push ahead! His stubbornness could be endearing at times but here I was really ready to just never play the damn thing again. Then there is a section where you are stuck in a cage and Super Monkey Ball this ain't! Again, turning and getting it to go up a step was stiff and completely joyless exercise. The controls are seriously a real huge issue in this game and I am amazed that in the decade that this game was in development that they did not give such an important part of gameplay a hell of a lot more polish.

But then the final third of the game happens and I am immediately sucked back in. The boy's relationship with Trico is a real heart melter and there are moments where my eyes did tear up a bit! Trico really is a beautifully animated creature that you can't help but like. The music is also a thing of pure beauty which is expertly placed throughout the game at just the right moments. I adapt to the controls and camera and the worst parts of the game are behind me. When the story really gets going I could not put the game down, a far cry from where I was a few hours ago in the game! Story and atmosphere is where this game really does shine.

In summary, I am glad that I stuck through the shit bits in order to experience this tale and overall my feelings towards the game are positive. But there are serious flaws with it and I feel it would have been a proper masterpiece if these issues were looked at and dealt with.

Totally, it really turns into quite the adventure towards the end and drops a lot of the nonsense that plagued the middle portion. So weird to have a game like this go from me not wanting to touch it to not putting it down. Such whiplash in opinion is rare for me to say the least!

June Tales from the Borderlands

After a Bit of a time off from gaming dew to porsonal reasons I eased my self in with a free telltale game.
I'm not a big fan of the Borderlands games and have not played a telltale game since walking dead session 2 which i loved. The game play has not really moved on from then, but the madcap story and lager than live charaters drew me in and I loved it. The soundtrack is extramly good I've downloaded all the licenced tracks.

Been a bit of time but I have finally got another game finished:

Jun - Littlebigplanet 2 (PS3)

This is by now something of an older game. It's something that I own as part of the PS+ subscription (along with LBP3 if ever I get a PS4) and is a game that I've been playing very sporadically over the last academic year or so with my 4 and 7 year old. I like the premise, and Stephen Fry's voice is always a delight, but I can't say I actually enjoyed it all that much. This is in part due to the guarantee that one or other small terror would end up crying at a tricky bit but also in part that I'm not overly keen on platformers.

I'm also not keen on the requirement that all the characters have to remain on the same screen - I understand it from a programming point of view mind you. This was quite bizarre on the final boss. The girls got as far as the second section and would have hit a brick wall in progress so I made time to finish it in private later.
Always a supporter of co-op play, I opened it up to have others join and it turned into an absolute mess. We were getting in each others way in the first section and it seemed to be timing other players out for not being on my screen. If this is the case then this is utterly ridiculous. Certainly, coordinating movements without chat didn't make for a pleasant gaming experience. Then on the second bit, we really got in each others way - it just wasn't clear enough who was who and the 'safety' platform was all but useless.
I had to back out and try it as a solo player as we just weren't making any progress. And the third section, for someone who hasn't played LBP1 was a nasty bit of trial and error.
There had been some flashes of inspiration throughout the game (a vertical scrolling section through a tree, or having to hold onto cakes to navigate metal barriers (it makes sense in context!) but the ending was just plain derivative and I didn't leave it glad for the experience

The controls are woolly and the collision detection seems a little suspect - some of the user made content is very good but browsing it is hard and I struggled also to properly navigate to another players moon despite having their user name.

I almost like the game - I certainly like what it's attempting to do - but the core platforming mechanic just isn't precise enough and the random difficulty spikes mar the encounter. I only stuck it out as a game that I could play with them both (though i wonder how much of their experience is influencing my own - they liked it enough to keep coming back to)

Interesting. I approached the game very warily, as I was dubious about the very contrived (in my eyes) setup. I think I had a more clinical approach due to that and wasn't expecting an emotional payoff but still enjoyed the stories being told. I especially liked the fish factory and the hunting trip ones.

Wow, despite hearing glowing reviews for this game and knowing parts of the story before playing. I was not expecting to like this game as much as I did. The dialogue in the first episode is a bit doggey but this criticism does not carry over to the other episodes. Looking forward to before the storm.

Emerald Isle (1985) emulated on PC

Well. This was one of Level 9's easier games, but I still had to use a walkthrough right at the death due to what I thought were 'rules' changing - basically that items were all single use up to that point and then three items became reusable in different puzzles. Also, there was a piece of treasure I'd never have found on my own.

Great stuff though, really enjoyed it. Will have to do Red Moon next.

Spoilers...for a 32 year old game ;)

Blimey, it's been ages since I've completed anything. The kids got me up so early this morning and we were downstairs by 5:30am. They then went back to sleep after being down for about 20 minutes so I sat and played through this in one go. It's alright. It's WarioWare innit. I think the GameCube version is still my favourite (and the first I played). This is much the same as every other WarioWare game other than that it's all touch based with a bit of mic blowing. Not much else to say really!

5.30am? Ooof. At least you used the time productively :P

I've finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PS3)

Fantastic game. If you passed it by for reasons (stealth games, thinking the main character looked like a dick etc), I'd strongly urge you to reconsider. I'm half tempted to get straight into Deus Ex Mankind Divided, but I'd better take a break for a while.

The Last Guardian finished.

Rarely do I have the enthusiasm and energy to smash a game but this one totally grabbed me. Just played it for almost 5 hours on the bounce!

You know it's a good session when the TV thinks you're not there anymore and threatens to power down.

Hell no, beaten that game dozens of times. It's good. I'd probably still play it than any other Survival Horror game of its style (I don't really consider games like Dead Space "survival horror," just scary 3D shooters).

Event[0] (PC)

This is the one where you're on a spaceship with only an AI for company, and communicate via typing into terminals. It didn't work for me, because no matter what I typed, I couldn't get the AI to give me any information about the critical choice I had to make at the end. I was being asked to choose based on a he-said she-said type scenario. Very annoying.

The Beginner's Guide (PC)

Well. If the intended purpose was for me to feel trapped and resentful, then the game certainly succeeded. Jokes aside, it was not pleasant to play, but was really interesting and merits another playthrough now that the true context has been given to the player at the end of the game. It's only 90 mins, but...the gameplay is not pleasant. Will have to power through at some point I suppose. Strangely enough, it has never occurred to me that there are people consumed by a need for self validation and that it might be a problem.

03/07 - Stories: The Path of Destinies

Picked this up in the Steam sale and blasted through it pretty quickly. It's a really neat game and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's one I've had my eye on since it first came out quite a while ago, but never got around to. I think it flew under the radar for a lot of people, probably thanks to its not particularly memorable name. But it's definitely worth checking out.

It's an isometric action RPG with a focus on story, kind of like Bastion. It's very colourful, and even has a narrator too. This one is more comedic and lighthearted though, and has a really fun twist. There are 25 endings, with only one of them being the "true" ending, and all the others resulting in the protagonist messing up, and inevitably dying in some comically catastrophic way. Each run through the story is pretty short, less than an hour, and you are given choices throughout which dictates the way the story goes. All of these endings that result in failure are also split in to four categories. The first time you complete a run in each category you are given a "truth", which is a piece of information that you can use to inform your choices in future runs. You need to get all four of these before you are able to attempt that final run though. So you need to play through the game a minimum of five times to see the real ending. I managed to get it in six.

The story itself is pretty simple, but I really liked it. It's very whimsical and fun, and I really like the storybook-esque presentation to everything. It's also interesting to see how characters act in different situations depending on the choices you make, as well as seeing the silly ways you can mess up. It's satisfying to put things together once you've learned all the different things you need to unlock the final ending too. The writing or narration themselves aren't anything particularly special. As with the inevitable comparison to Bastion, it can't touch it on those points. But it does the job well enough. Still well done and enjoyable. There are quite a lot of jokes and references going on, which again, aren't the best, but are still fairly good, There was only one reference that I thought was groan-worthy and felt forced. The rest got a good smirk or chuckle.

The gameplay is not bad either. As with some of the other aspects, it's enjoyable, but not particularly noteworthy. It's serviceable, and enjoyable enough to not get boring during the length of the game, but it's not anything I would call especially great. It's a Batman: Arkham-like melee system, where you're using basic attacks to take on groups of enemies with simple controls and a lot of counters. Getting a big combo up is quite fun, and there are four different swords with their own elemental powers that add a bit of variety as well. But the feedback isn't great, and sometimes it can feel a bit unfair when you get attacked by more than one enemy at once. At pretty much any point in the game you can get almost instantly killed by small groups of enemies if they just so happen to attack you in a certain way. But it is still quite fun when you upgrade the wind sword and you can be slashing your way around the battlefield, parrying everything, and not letting a single attack hit you.

Overall though the main draw to the game though is its approach to story and its fun, comedic tone. It's worth checking out for that, especially at the current Steam sale price.
