That's actually pretty cool. I've never used or bought an Amiibo in my life but this might be the game for it. I'll have to construct a secret drawer beneath my secret porn drawer to stash them, though.

Ones not from the Zelda series just give you some crafting items for the most part. Zelda series ones that aren't specifically Breath of the wild ones give you a treasure chest too, usually a semi decent weapon. The ones specifically for Breath of the Wild have larger gameplay effects, but still nothing game breaking.

I found a natural sort of bowl in the land and began scanning all my crafting item amiibos, to create a sort of pool of stuff.

About 15 in I started to notice that items were starting to de-spawn, so there is a limit of on screen pick ups it seems.

I still can't bring myself to use Amiibo. Feels too much like pay-to-win. The only thing I've really struggled with has been Standard Arrows, which I've remedied by buying out Arrows from every merchant I pass.

So I went ahead and bought the WiiU version today. Partly because of the critical acclaim, partly due to a desire to encourage Nintendo to put effort in their first-party lineup, and partly as insurance against a potential TP situation which would result in future scarcity.

Can't see myself having either the time or the motivation to dive into it any time soon, however. *bows head in shame*

You know how I said I thought they were holding the music back in this one for the right moment?

They do.

I love how it gradually creeps in to alert you to things too. Have heard some familiar themes that made me realise an innocuous bit of scenery may not be so throwaway...

Completed my first dungeon last night. Won't say which as in theory, you could have experienced something very different.

Totally kept the feeling of a classic Zelda experience, and yet it was a completely fresh adventure. A couple of real 'Aha!' moments too. Reminded me of some of the Shadow of the colossus battles in part.

The combat was very easy throughout but I suspect that's because I went off doing side quests for 20 hours. Something I think I'm about to do again.

Nothing I've ever played has given such a grand feeling of adventure than this.

I know the internet and social media is a wash with stories of the like but last night I sailed around the South East coast looking for stuff and felt totally fulfilled by whatever I found.

It just seems so meaty, when perhaps sometimes it isn't, leaving with you with a wonderful sense of gratification.

Wonderful, wonderful game.

I really wish Nintendo sold their soundtracks on iTunes. I already sulked that the Splatoon one isn't available on there. They're leaving money on the table!

His review is pretty much spot on. The things he dislikes in games appear a lot in this game. So he's clearly never going to give it a ten.

Good chunk of my friends on twitter have similar views on it. I think it's a fantastic open world twist on the Zelda formula, but if you don't like open world games it's not going to magically convert you. In fact if what you wanted was another traditional Zelda you might be pretty disappointed with it.

Jim tweeted earlier that it works both ways too, he isn't 'being more honest' giving it a 7 because to say so implies that anyone giving it a 10 isn't. He doesn't like it as much as other people do. It happens.

I think he's an absolute fucking dickhead but his review isn't unreasonable.

And even if it was unreasonable, it's a review and those are just opinions. This idea from the most vocal parts of the net that all reviewers must agree with each other on everything when the game is perceived by them as 'good' and that they must not be allowed to like something when the game is perceived as 'bad' is absolutely toxic and it needs to go.

It's an attitude that's creeping into movie reviewing now as well, and it just makes me sad.

That bleach comment was fucking disgraceful. It is this toy throwing out of the pram behaviour that the gaming community indulges in far too much that ensures I never call myself a "gamer". The fact that people are crying that his review has lowered the metacritic score to 97... why the hell would you care about such a thing? I just can't fathom what goes on in people's heads sometimes. Do these arseholes actually keep themselves awake at night that a game they like is not enjoyed to the same degree by everybody? And taking down his website over it, just pathetic behaviour.

Also I find that Jim's 7 out of 10 games tend to be ones I really adore such as Tearaway Unfolded and Abzu, so if I ever get the chance to try it, odds are I will love it too. This idea that anything below a 8 is garbage that is not worth looking at needs to die out, badly.

I did it guys! I finally caved and bought my Wii U version of Breathe of the Wild!

And once it arrives via post, I shall unwrap it, make sure it's in good working order, then place it back on the shelf for much later because I have a ridiculous backlog of games to approach first!

Isn't gaming in adulthood great? Never enough time...

Edit: Off-topic Sterling related comments:
Spoiler: show
Well, I don't feel I belong to the gaming community, just as I don't belong to the football community. I don't even feel a particular connection to the fans of my club, many of whom demonstrate that they're incredibly offensive and hateful, week in week out.

I'm very happy to share a little subsection like this one, with a refreshingly respectful and enthusiastic community, but I don't feel that I necessarily have anything in common with people, just because they play games. I always thought that most people are essentially sound - and I think this is true in real life, if you take time to learn something about their needs and motivation and circumstances - but the Internet is still very young and raw, no matter how sanitised and homogeneous it seems to many of us older gits. Human beings have yet to learn how to communicate anonymously. I think we'll look back on these last fifteen or twenty years with both rose tinted specs and no small dose of horror.

Had a few days away from this what with work and travel away but picked it up again last night. Probably the most rewarding play session to date.

Get the feeling the sense after completing this is going to be like when I had to go back to normal TV post Breaking Bad, and nothing clicked for ages. This is a masterpiece.
