Most pointlessly frustrating gaming moments

Post by Bluebird55 »

Hey all

Yep, the most stupidly pointless moments that made your blood boil, which was it on what game and why? Mine is the Ice Heart chapter on Uncharted 2, clambering all over the cogs, fighting the yeti mobs all to get to the top of the mountain and THEN getting back to the place you were at BEFORE the whole chapter! Almost quit playing that bloody game and then to top it off you have to play bulldog with a sodding tank after pointlessly clambering around inside an ancient structure.

Cheers 🐦

I remember playing Castlevania 64. It wasn't the best game by any means, and it certainly hasn't aged well, but I enjoyed it and it had some nice spooky moments.

Until there was one mission where you had to carry a very volatile substance. I can't remember the exact details, but you couldn't get hit or jump or you would explode. Add to this a terrible early 3D camera and I hit a wall that I just never bothered to get past.

A Lord of the Rings game on what I think was the PS2.

The general game was decent but the final level culminated in a stage where you had to defend a gate from waves and waves of Orc's and other similar beasts.

You'd stand there doing what you do for a while, then you'd become conscious that nothing more is happening, to the point you get that nagging feeling that your not actually doing anything. That gamers feeling where you start to question if you're actually doing any damage to the enemies you're fighting. I know you know that feeling.

For a while we defended that gate, then died, then did it again.

To the point we put it down to not knowing what you had to do and stopped playing the game.

Turns out I believe, that all you had to do was continue to trend water for a while and that would be that.

Not that frustrating really but was the first thing that popped into my head when I read the Thread Title.

Wow having flashbacks now XD yeah I really liked the two towers game on PS2 but man that part was awfull.

For me the first thing it comes to mind are a few sections in MGS2, first bomb defusal in which you have to run around the Big shell looking under every corner with a scanner trying to find bombs to disarm, it's not very fun and in the end it doesnt even matter! Another frustrating point in that is the infamous, underwater, timed escort mission... once again you do all of that and in the end it doesnt even matter, probably the worst gameplay sequence in the whole series, yeah MGS2 story might've been ahead of it's time but it's gameplay sure wasnt! I think it's quite telling how the gameplay changed after 2.

- I've never had any issue with the bomb defusing section in MGS2, mostly because I think they are all quite cleverly hidden and I appreciate the fact that the number and locations of the bombs change depending on the difficulty. The underwater section is indeed horrendous, although I personally consider the Communications Tower in MGS1 to be even worse and definitely my least favorite set piece of the entire series.

- The end-game Eliminator and GP races in Burnout 3 deserve a place on this list. It's not just that they're hard and mechanically demanding, it's that the cheap rubber-banding AI can make you restart the entire lengthy endeavor through no real fault of your own.

- Sniper Alley in Halo 2 on Legendary is a real blemish on an otherwise great campaign. Tiny enemies one-shotting you from across the map within seconds of detecting you is terrible encounter design.

- Last but not least, let's not forget how the very nature of (especially team-based) multiplayer titles tends to bring out the worst in people. My personal experience with this is primarily in Overwatch: The game itself is absolutely fantastic, but there is something really wrong and disturbing with the fact that about half of the competitive matches suffer from deplorable human behavior such as throwers, quitters, trolls, mis-/non-communication and general toxicity. Other singleplayer games may be very badly designed, but it's simply disheartening to know that all the efforts and positivity you put into what is essentially an inherently social activity can and will often be erased by a single jabroni out there somewhere, only for the rest of the team to end up paying the price for it. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, after all.

Crikey, all really bad parts of otherwise fantastic franchises, I recall another hair pulling moment, I think I actually ought to get therapy for it. Well, two, no three! First one is the Reaper encounter on Mass Effect 3, good grief that was horrible, waltzing about on what I can only describe as a shelf facing a reaper (for those unfamiliar with the Mass Effect series, reapers are about as tall as that building in Dubai, you know, that really tall one and fire beams capable of blowing up frikkin cities!) and you have a poncy stupid gun which was blatantly made by hillbillies because you have to charge it up so that a flotilla of ships can shoot at the said reaper which, if you think about it, makes as much sense as washing your hands before you go to the toilet (you would make waaay more progress doing that, by the way). You have to do this THREE SODDING BUGGERING TIMES and if you die at any, I repeat ANY point in this fight you have to start again. And you have to dodge it's lasers which it fires every 10 seconds and after doing so successfully all that happens is that it jabbers to you (would have been nice to nick it's laser but hey, WE HAVE TO DESTROY IT, OK?).

Another moment was in Mass Effect 1, the final boss literally consists of you sat behind two blocks shooting at the boss which jumps around and hits you like a fothermucker and the other moment was on Gears of War 1, the very last boss where you fire about a billion billion trillion and fourty seven bullets at the boss in order to off him. And that's just on normal! My college mate told me that the hardest difficulty takes about half an hour at least. Of shooting. At something that again, hits like a fothermucker. Thanks, devs, thanks. 🐦

N.b. I haven't played Overwatch by the way but I know them feels, the whole reason I quit WoW, it's gone really bad on that bloody game, nobody helps out like they sorta did back in '09, it's a shame.

It's become a bit of a clichè but those giant archers in Dark Souls Anor Londo REALLY pissed me off. I've got loads I could add to this topic if I have a think about it - will post them up soon!

Alex, from what I have heard Dark Souls is without a doubt the hardest game ever developed! I played a trial on the 360 a number of years ago and I couldn't even get past the first enemy! I died like 5 times! Third, I am half way through 3 and I appreciate the headsup, thanks! Yes Uncharted is very stressful purely for that reason, I can't understand why they would make it so hard - and I play it on Easy! It might be me though.

Another frustrating moment was on Modern Warfare 2 when you had to repeatedly tap buttons to stab some nob right at the end, really? I could have killed him by shooting him! Yeah, real modern!

Well, I'd have to say I disagree with that. If you discount Demons Souls which I think remained a bit of a cult classic, Dark Souls came at a time when games were holding the players hand far too much and bucked the trend by being very oblique and punishing. It rewarded careful, thoughtful play and would severely kick the ass of anyone who came in with all their proverbial guns blazing.

There were a few moments where I questioned whether I'd ever be able to beat a certain boss or get through a particular section but the more you play the more your skills develop and the easier it becomes. The odds are stacked against you all the time, but I don't actually think it's a hard game. Just one that you need to respect, because half a second of thinking you're indestructible will be your undoing.

I implore you to go back and give it another try. It's my favourite game ever, and I think anyone who can get through the first 3 or 4 hours will end up falling in love forever.

Oh really? That's probably where I went wrong, I was probably rushing into it, I didn't really know what to do and just thought "hey, a mob and I have a sword!".

So is it more of a strategy game then?

Also, on Diablo when you're in a rift and come across a goblin pack and they all scarper and you don't kill a single one. That's irritating.

In recent memory.....this:

I grew to like the QTEs by the end of the game, some kind of Stockholm Syndrome at work. But early on, with this and the dust mites, holy shit. It was not helped by me being colourblind and not always spotting the dark red(?) one against the background.

Blooming heck, I can see why you struggle! I'm sorry to hear that you have colour blindness, is it quite a problemchild? I never considered Simon Says-based games, interesting! Another one for me is, without a shadow of a doubt, Fable 3. Honestly? Microsoft should give up while they can, if you played Fable: TLC, you would see why Fable 2 is such a flop anyway and Fable 3? Basically, in case anyone is playing it, MAKE MONEY MAKE SO MUCH MONEY because at the end you need a crapload of money in order to finish it without causing ingame grief from the NPCs.

Absolutely hits (clever pun I put in there from TLC) game.

I wouldn't say so, but the fighting is a lot more strategic than most games that came before it. You do need to take your time and learn enemy moves so that you can parry, counter and backstab effectively. And the bosses.... Well, just go back and give it another go and see what you think.

Hm, it sounds quite like WoW in that it's all about tactics, I could get into it, maybe, see what temperature my blood is when I finish playing it haha :P

This is going to feel like a very safe bet here but the disappearing block sections on the Heat Man stage in Mega Man 2 still give me nightmares. Not only is that part punishingly hard, but the sound that the blocks make as they appear and disappear is unsettling. It is like the volume on that sound effect is just slightly louder than the other sounds in the game and each time the noise hits, I am rattled and mistime a jump and end up dying. Save states have taken care of this problem in the legacy collection but I try to remain pure and not use them. It is maddening.

Ugh...Heat Man. Many a swear word was hurled at the NES back in the day much to the chagrin of my parents.

Halo 4's final QTE showing the wrong button prompt on the screen definitely makes this list for me.

QTEs seem like a good way to rob a game's climax of its impact for me anyway, but this was ridiculous! Was I pushing the button early? ...late? Oh, it's a completely different button? Great. :x

(That was the only video I could find of the issue, and KevonKoolx manages to give the wrong 'correct' button! What are the chances?! :P )

I really don't mind them if they punctuate the action after a mechanically engaging boss fight or set piece, like in the God of War series. It's when they're used as a substitute for proper content that I have a problem with their inclusion.

You don't have to bother with it of you get the hover sled item first. You can just skip that whole section. I always said 'screw this' from my younger years on, no save states needed. :D

I always find forced stealth sections in games which are not designed as stealth games to be incredibly annoying. See the military base section in Fahrenheit for one. Follow missions in Assassins Creed can do one, too.

There's a special place in hell reserved for whoever modified the Assassins Creed follow missions in Assassins Creed 3 to make you also have to stay within a circle to eavesdrop. Those were ridiculously frustrating to do. Glad they seem to have gone away again in the more recent games.
