Annoying Gaming Lexicon
Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
Yeah even as a kid I thought it was stupid they didn't call the boxer M.Bison but then read about the name swaps in Mean Machines and it became clearer.
Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
I always found it weird that Vega seems more of a fitting name for a Spanish guy.

Yes, there is that. I suspect someone at Capcom US had the same thought.
But if only they'd just given Bison a different name and left the others alone we wouldn't have had decades of confusion!

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
Believe it or not, I only just learned that Vega is Bison's real name! I thought it was only a straight Bison/Balrog swap.

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
I'm sure we covered it in our SFII podcast.
But yes, it's way more stupid than it ought to be!

I'll have to give that one another listen; funnily enough, one of the very first eps I listened to.

Also, I believe it was supposed to be 'Zan-jee-eff', not the popular 'Zan-Geef'.
Still, I knew a guy who pronounced Guile as 'Gilly' so it could be worse!

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
As I'm a massive nerd, I've just done the leg work and checked the Super Famicom manual - it lists the character as ザンギエフ or Za n gee (hard G) eh fu. I can't say I know enough about Russian to know how it would be pronounced, but in the Street Fighter universe it seems to have always had a hard G.

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
Oh, ok (re the 'Giev/'Geef) - I stand happily corrected!
Gully!
Gully!
Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
Generally I go by whatever the announcer says in SFV, and that guy definitely says Zan Gee Eff (hard g)

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
I know but now they are still referred to and called those names so surely it standsratsoalbion wrote: ↑July 29th, 2017, 11:34 pm Nope! The Japanese names are the original and correct ones.
Vega - with the peaked hat - is the main villain and final boss.
Balrog - from Spain - has a claw, you know, like a balrog.
And why the Hell would the boxer character who looks just like Mike Tyson circa 1991 not be called M. Bison?
As we know, the names were only messed around and mixed up due to Capcom's American arm protecting themselves from potential legal action.

I'm not into Street Fighter so this info could be outdated, but it was my understanding that specific code names were being used to refer to these three characters during international tournaments in order to avoid any misunderstandings. Claw, Boxer & Dictator. Seems like a pragmatic workaround to me.

Re: Annoying Gaming Lexicon
That is the commonly used workaround, indeed. Still a rather silly situation though in my opinion.
Then there's Charlie/Nash/Charlie Nash too of course!

Does she prefer Gouki or Akuma though? Or is he just 'Demon'?
