Yes, I think it's a game that every WiiU owner should experience. Despite my misgivings with the game, it's probably one of my favorite exclusive titles for the platform and arguably the one that makes the best use out of the GamePad's unique properties.

If I may offer one word of advice, unless you are already highly experienced with Platinum's other action games, you might want to consider setting the difficulty on easy. I found the learning curve to be surprisingly steep on normal, especially at the beginning.

Chopper wrote: September 18th, 2018, 5:54 pm Yes, thanks for the comprehensive reply, much appreciated! I have no further questions m'lud :)

I completed Blues and Bullets Episode 2.

This one ends with Eliot Ness and Al Capone on the lam from some shadowy underworld figures. :D

I wish there were more episodes, I haven't played anything like it. I'd almost recommend that people check out these two episodes if they see them for pennies, but an unfinished game is a hard sell.
I started the first episode but when I heard they weren’t finishing it I stopped. I hate an unfinished story but maybe I’m part of the problem. Episodic games to an extent live or die based on the early sales. So all the people like me who waited for it to be finished we’re probablythe reason why it never was!

20/09 - Darksiders: Warmastered Edition

Thought it would be a good idea to go through this one again given the next game is coming out soonish. Also not played this remaster properly before. Still a good time. Very solid and and enjoyable experience, albeit very straightforward in comparison to the sequel. One thing I've always disliked about this game though is how ridiculously high the XP requirements are for upgrading your weapons. I've never fully levelled them up before because of that, until this run that is. Turns out there's a good place to grind for XP that gets is up relatively quickly, so I used that. Glad to at least have done it once, and have the secondary weapons actually do decent damage this time round.

Not really sure on the point of this remaster though. It's pretty much indistinguishable from the original as far as I can tell. No noticeable change to the graphics at all, and the content is completely untouched. I suppose it's good for higher resolution and frame rate for the console version, but on PC, it's pretty pointless. Although I suppose one difference is that the PC version keeps messing up when you boot up the game, forgetting that it's not supposed to be in windowed mode, displaying the wrong size image. Not a huge deal but kind of annoying that it can't just properly remember.

20/09 - AER: Memories of Old

A very pleasant and serene experience. Wonderful visuals and a nice soundtrack to go with it. The mechanics of flying around are really nice and satisfying. Has a very good feeling of control to it, and has a great sense of freedom and airiness. The on-foot sections in the shrines aren't as interesting though. They're okay, with some eerie environments to explore, but it doesn't feel as good being stuck walking around compared to being able to soar in the sky. And the mechanics rarely extend beyond "find button, press button", when said button isn't hidden at all. But it was a fun enough time. Really enjoyed the flying and the aesthetic to it.

Yes, me too. I only bought these only when they were being offered in a two-for-one type deal.

There's a series called The Council underway at the moment that I intend to buy when it's done...once again part of the problem I guess. But the alternative for me would be having to replay the episodes as they come out as I won't retain the story over a period of 12 months or whatever.

On the other hand, those buggers at Kentucky Route Zero have all my money for episodes I won't play so potatoes potatoes.

Haha I did the same thing and paid up front for the whole series! I think it was because that was the only way to get episode 2 via their website at one point.

Have you not finished it? I haven’t gone back after the second episode but keep meaning to

I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot, and thought the third was subpar. Then there was a two-year wait for episode 4, so I didn't bother with it once it was released. I don't know when Act 5 will come out, but I doubt I'll revisit them all.

It's a pity, I thought it started off strongly; they were at the forefront of the current-American-dystopia cultural movement in gaming, I think.

Is act 5 not out? I had no idea. I thought they announced it for consoles at the start of the year so was sort of waiting for that really.

Didn't realize this was made by the same team as Unepic at first so expectations were very low. The first conversation of the game wasn't a dick joke so things were already looking up.

You get power ups and weapons largely through finishing alarms that get progressively harder the more you activate. Most of your items are dropped on death and only a few remain where you died to be retrieved. How many and what drops is determined by the difficulty level you select at the start. It is a slightly different take on things.

There is also a bit of a skill tree to go through. There a set number of points you get during the game to permanently improve (there is one line that makes things harder). You can get double jump right away and I don't know why someone wouldn't get that first. The game is doable without it but it lets you shortcut some rooms and helps dodge attacks.

The other main way to get permanent upgrades is collecting all the souls in a room. They only appear after performing an action in the room. It can be as simple as moving to a specific spot or entering the room from a certain direction. It can be as absurd as possessing an enemy and moving it to a specific spot or saving and quitting in the room. There is never a hint as to what needs to be done.

While this team learned a bunch from Unepic (90% of the dialogue leading to a dick joke is a big improvement), there is one area they haven't. What really makes a metroidvania. Just like Unepic, every area is opened up by a key. The core concept of this genre is getting new abilities that let you further explore the game world. Everything being a key is taking the easy way out and makes it uninteresting.

Sept 16 - The Turing Test (PC)

A first person puzzle game inspired by Portal. The puzzles are largely fine but some felt weird solving them as elements would go unused. Not even in a too much information kind of way. More like the puzzle giving you 5 balls but you only need 4 to solve it. The 5th just sits there for no reason.

An ok story but the game title is slightly misleading. It revolves around the Chinese Room specifically and not the Turing Test in general. Just a bit of a nit pick.

Overall, there isn't too much to say here. Puzzles are fine but fairly simple with only a couple taking a moment extra to solve. It never gets near to the same level as its inspiration.

You can basically look at my comment for the first game and copy it here. The differences are that the conversations are somehow worse. They also block the left side of the screen now, a common place for bosses to move to. At least there is an option to turn conversations off completely.

There is also a second playable character that I enjoyed a lot more. Tagging is done by dashing into an enemy instead of shooting them and their main attack has much less visual clutter. There are also a couple different stages between the two characters.

There are still attacks in this game that I have no idea how you are supposed to dodge them.

Mudrunner: Spintires (PS4)

It's good to know that one can still stumble upon an unexpected pleasure like this and be surprised and delighted.

I finished all the standard maps, and there are two more free dlc maps I need to try out. Really satisfying gameplay, which involves planning a route across a big map, and coping with unexpected developments as you go (a deep river to cross; using the refuelling trucks to refuel on the hoof; stuck, drowned and capsized trucks to rescue etc). The vehicles, environment and mud are all really well realised. Top marks.

22/09 - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Much like with recently playing through Human Revolution, this time I decided I wanted to go through the game differently to being stealthy my first time. Going in this time though I was less set on sticking to it, knowing from HR how much stealth is kind of necessary. I also think in this game taking the lethal route doesn't really make as much sense narratively. In HR, you're going up against PMCs and the likes. People who have the objective and means of killing you on sight. In MD however, you're up against people who mostly are only violent in retaliation, and don't want to go after you specifically. It's not until the very end of the game that taking the lethal route makes sense. Most notably that final boss fight.

As such, I spent most of the game saving up for that encounter, making sure I had a big arsenal of powerful weapons, and lots of combat-focused augmentations. But when I got there, I found that I had some device that I forgot about that allowed me to just skip the boss fight entirely, making all that preparation pointless. So I went back and actually did the fight a couple more times, just so I could use the stuff I actually wanted to. And honestly, even though it was somewhat fun to do that, it was a little anticlimactic. Being in NG+ with a bunch of upgrades, the fight is kind of a push-over. Very different to my original run where I had to sneak around and avoid direct confrontation. Honestly that was probably a more enjoyable way to do it.

Playing this one directly after HR, and focusing so much on my equipment this time around, I realised how this game actually has a pretty different focus to that one. It may seem like these games are more or less that same thing, but MD leans way more heavily on the augments than HR. In that game the guns you have available to you, and the things you can do with them, are much more expansive. Here you don't really have that many over-the-top powerful guns. Instead, you have a bunch of crazy overpowered augments. It seems like a lot of the utility of those old weapons were sort of transplanted over in to Jensen's own body. I used some of them a bit, but not much. But there's a lot of cool stuff there for powerful lethal and non-lethal methods.

But now I think I'm done with Deus Ex for a good while. Won't bother replaying the DLC, or The Fall either. Not sure if I'll try to pick up any other game in the genre either. Playing these games again, and with Prey's DLC coming out recently, got me thinking on my relationship to so-called "immersive sims". Even though I really like the idea of them, I have a feeling that maybe they're just not for me. Not "real" examples of the genre anyway. Wasn't a fan of either Dishonored or Prey when I tried them. And examples I do like are ones that I guess some might say aren't "real" immersive sims. These Deus Ex games and Bioshock. Both are comparatively simple and based around empowering the player. Other stuff I just find too obtuse and punishing. For all their supposed extra options for creativity, I often found those games telling me "no" whenever I wanted to try something, while these Deus Ex games do not, even if the hypothetical range of possibilities isn't as wide.

In some ways I liked this more second time around possibly due to the directors cut enhancements. On the other hand being aware of the twists and turns in the story took away some of the enjoyment. I’m also at a time in my life where time is a premium and I wasn’t enjoying it enough to delve into all the side quests like last time.

It still astounds me how they made a carbon copy of Naomi watts and got away with it!
What’s even stranger is that all the other character models (even agent morgan) seem to have less attention to detail compared to Emily.

While technically I finished the story portion of Spidey on the 22nd, I unlocked everything the game has to offer and unlocked the platinum trophy yesterday.

Spider-Man is a great game that does nothing new at all, but does what it does perfectly in terms of gameplay and mechanics.

On the whole the story was good, although towards the end some of the character development and consequenses felt a little rushed.

A great game though, and I'm totally up for more so bring on the DLC!

Yakuza Kiwami.

Strange one as every single aspect of it is inferior to Yakuza 0 but I am giving it a bit of a free pass as it is a remake rather than a new game like 0. The story and characters in this world kept me going through till the end.

I will confess for the first time since
Spoiler: show
Henry and Sam in The Last Of Us
I did get a bit of dust in my eye at one point near the end.

I felt having played these games back to back how I felt playing Shenmue back when it first came out. Kiryu and Majima are probably two of my favourite videogame characters ever and I had never heard of them 3 months ago.

I got the double pack with Last Light quite some time ago now, but abandoned 2033 around a third of the way in. I decided to start it again, and I thought it was quite good. Not amazing, but pretty atmospheric and some fun gameplay. The story was totally lacking though, where did the monsters come from, why were they there, who were the shadow people? I'd like to have got some answers! Oh, and FUCK the last five minutes. It basically ended with a 'just guess which way you need to go and we'll kill you if you get it wrong. Go on, guess. WRONG! TRY AGAIN!' type thing. Still, no boss fights was welcome. Glad I played it, and I'll do Last Light at some point, but looking at my last few 'big' games completed, MAN do I need a break from killing monsters in gloomy, dimly lit surroundings!! Think I'll play the Assassins Creed 2 remaster on the Ezio Collection next, and soak up its bright and colourful locale!

Devil May Cry HD

I think it's only my second complete playthrough of the game, and the first one must have been 10 years ago on PS2. I've often dismissed this game for not being on the level of DMC3, NGB or Bayonetta (2), but going back to it... It's an excellent overall product. The RE DNA shines through the entire game, and I was positively surprised at how atmospheric it can be at times. Also, the soundtrack has a few cues that appear to have been copied into RE4 note-for-note, and that's always a plus in my eyes. Pacing and level design are also top-notch.

It's not all gold, though. The fixed cameras that I love so much can cause visibility issues during certain fights. I'll go on record and maintain that the classic GoW trilogy makes better use of the concept than this game. I found Nightmare in particular to be a bit frustrating at times. The combat is also nowhere near as refined as its sequels', but at least it gets the fundamentals right.

I want to replay it on Hard soon, but I also want to have the time to dig into 3 & 4 again before 5 comes out next year, together with the rest of my pile of shame, of course. Let's see.

Great game. Not an absolute timeless masterpiece, but certainly worth playing if only to savour all the little details of the era that are nowhere to be seen nowadays.

The Walking Dead Final Season Episode 2

Ironically another amazing episode after Episode 1. I didnt mention before but they have done away with the percentages at the end and rather how your relationships were with certain characters.

No trailer for Episode 3 only a title and a November 6th release date. We will see.
