Where is the ‘howl in anguish’ emoji?

It’s like a three stage boss fight where you breeze through stages 1 & 2 every time and get obliterated one second into stage 3. I just can’t cope with speed 10.

It’s my first time playing Tetris for more than 30 seconds. No doubt I will look back and laugh about this next week.

I am about halfway through Normal but have hit a speed 11 level.

Spoilers.

Speed 11 is too fast for me. Are you deploying focus?

No, haven’t touched it. I believe the line clears don’t count when you use focus.

Also haven’t really gone for the 4-line clears or multiples. Just moseying through it really, that stuff is for later.

It is very good. I had my doubts about the price but it’s an excellent game.

Focus gives you thinking time and breathing space. Trust me, use it.

I can’t believe you spoilt it for me. I only play Tetris for the narrative 🤣

I enjoyed this far more second time around. It seemed fairer and aside from a few moments early on I breezed through it. I suspect there was some tinkering in the difficulty for the remaster as I played on spartan mode which I don’t remember being in the Xbox 360 original (maybe it was). There were moments which gave me alien isolation flashbacks and reminded me why I probably won’t ever play that again (the palpitations were too much).

Fucking love seeing someone really enjoy one of my more niche favourites. Great write-up KSub.

FYI difficulty doesn't change on new game plus so it's just an excuse to A-rank missions. The expert skirmishes on the other hand trouble even fully levelled squads.

Thanks, man! I saw you were busy with VC4 on your end these last few days as well!

Yeah, I played the first half of the campaign again today on NG+ and grabbed all the A ranks in the process. Looking forward to finishing up and tackling the skirmishes over the weekend.

But I think I'll take a strategic break and save VC4 for January or February next year. I really don't want to burn myself out as a result of my own impatience. I've heard nothing but great things (including from your post!) and I wanna savour it properly. The LE tank is really cute, though!

Great franchise, I'm already a superfan. I really hope there's more on the horizon.

It’s a weird thing to boot up a game which I rented many years ago and had given up on after a few hours. A partially finished trophy list and half completed challenges were all sitting waiting to be finished.

First time around offered only crushing disappointment. This time I was ready for a terrible game and what I got was a half baked hodgepodge of mediocrity with Geiger window dressing. Despite that It was actually quite fun and I think Pitchford said he thought the game was a 7/10 and was dragged down by the weight of expectation. He’s probably right.

Well, it's been a while. During which time I've polished off Platinum Trophies for Marvel's Spider-Man and Bloodborne (again!) Right now I'm heading for a completed Achievement list for the LEGO Harry Potter Collection. And somewhere in the mix I played enough Forza Horizon 4 to consider it "finished" too.

Still expectantly looking forward to more Spider-Man DLC, and fully intending a higher-difficulty NG+ playthrough as well. And, of course taking my time with Hitman 2... because I'm worth it. Or it's worth it. One of us is, at least. :P

I’ll pop my thoughts on the main podcast thread.

With a few exceptions I think I’ve managed to keep up the the podcast list this year pretty well and feast on some old delights. There’s still time for a few more on my backlog.

A fine body of work. I must admit to doing a double take at some of the games that have showed up on your list this last month or two :)

I have finished Déraciné, the Hidetaka Miyazaki-directed VR game. While being a time-travelling adventure game, it does share some of the Bloodborne DNA, specifically in the sense of creepiness that pervades the game. Item descriptions are often written in the Souls manner, and unspeakable horrors are hinted at.

It's a real curiosity. The setting is well realised; while there is very little interactivity with objects, the school is stuffed with detail. The character models sit on the line between doll-like and human, and the setting mostly looks like a real place.

The story is pretty slight - you have to travel back and forward in time to save a bunch of kids who are in a bad spot because of fantastical reasons, and I don't think I ever connected with the characters. There is some repetitiveness; at times in the game I was loving it; at times I hated it.

I don't know if I'd recommend it or not. It's a fascinating game for "From Software reasons", but is not really fun or compelling to play (apart from the middle section where you're trying to figure out what is going on). It's closest cousins are probably Murdered: Soul Suspect, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, and The Invisible Hours. If you enjoyed those you'll likely get on well with it.

16th Aug - Life is Strange (Xbox One)
23rd Sep- Spider-Man (PS4)
2nd Nov - Spider-Man: The Heist DLC (PS4)
16th Nov - Tetris Effect (PS4)

I played through the Journey mode of Tetris Effect in normal over the weekend in VR, and my goodness that's a treat for the senses.

I tried playing a few games on the TV and it just felt like I was missing out on so much, so I'll be playing in VR only going forward.

Tetris has always been a favourite of mine, and this is by far the best version I've played.

Update: Polished off LEGO Harry Potter Collection to 100%.

My excitement for these games is probably too tied up in the franchise that they're dressed in (not sure LEGO The Incredibles is one I'm up for, for example). That's kind of the formula though, and Harry Potter is all kinds of my jam, so...

11-11: Memories Retold

A weird one , this. There are undoubtedly good elements to it, but from the beginning it didn't work for me. Its setting is the horrible reality of the Somme and Passchendaele, but the plot is moved forward by a series of fantastical events. I liked the impressionistic art style for landscapes, but it turned all the (especially background) characters into faceless ghouls, which perhaps was intentional. There are a lot of collectibles, scraps of paper providing background detail, the collecting of which was a bit incongruous on the battlefield.

It could work - Valiant Hearts has a lot of the same elements - but not for me.

The second piece of DLC for Spider-Man was more of the same, but that's no bad thing. The gameplay continues to be excellent, the characters well written and as we all know by now, the game looks great, especially on the Pro in 4K.

The difficulty seemed to be a little harder than the main game and previous DLC, so it was nice to have a bit more of a challenge.

It's very rare that I get round to playing DLC for games, but I can't wait for the next and final part.

Yaaaassss! Tetris Effect Journey Mode (Beginner)

Phew; thought I'd never get past the final stage, the slow slow superfast sequence was killing me. I went into the previous stage and practised at speed 10 until I could reliably clear 30 lines and then went back to the final stage. Two hours later....

I was not convinced that it was worth 40 Euro before I bought it, but it really was, and then some. Great game, and I've only scratched the surface.

Tell you what, talk about it putting you in touch with your own mortality though. :(

Never mind slowing reaction speed, it appears I turn into one of those folks who can't tell left from right when under pressure. And it was very instructive to record a level clear; you can see exactly how slow you are thinking and processing information when you play it back. :o

Happy to clear it; not sure if I'll pursue a finish on Normal yet. Maybe next year.

Dunno how old you are Chopper but I cleared this without any real trouble at age 46 and nearly a half.

Normal difficulty is another proposition but - genuinely - I have been playing Tetris for 30 years and I’ve never been as good at it as I am now.
