Saw a streamer I follow was playing this and going from nothing to clearing the whole game in S rank in a very short period of time, so that made me feel kind of bad for being only mediocre at this game for the whole time I've been playing it, so I decided to jump back in again and see what I could do. Originally I was under the impression I had already beaten the game on this mode, but apparently I hadn't. But now I have, so that's good. Managed to do alright at this mode though, so maybe I'm not so terrible at the game after all. Managed to up my skills and learn a few new moves against a couple of bosses too. I did also try my hand at Dante Must Die, but I only got about 1/3 of the way through the game before I was relying on items on a level way more than I was happy with. But I guess I'm okay not beating that mode. There always seems to be a wall with these games I can't push past. Just get too much for me. But Son of Sparda is respectable enough I suppose. Might try and do it with Vergil as well. Don't think I'll bother with Lady/Trish though.

Oh, sweet! Yeah, there's always a reason to go back to these games and to try a more difficult layer of challenge every time. Ridiculous replayability. I felt a bit burned out after spending so much time in Bloody Palace and grabbing all S ranks on Human and Devil Hunter recently, so I haven't done Son of Sparda yet. Did you get any S ranks this time around?

Managed to S rank 4 chapters by the end. A rank was pretty common as well. The ranking system always seemed a little bit strange to me though. They penalise you massively for dying, yet eating through loads of items to avoid that barely knocks your rank at all. I'm sure I could have gotten a much better rank on a couple of chapters if I didn't let myself die out of not wanting to use a gold orb. I've always found replaying easier modes to try for higher ranks doesn't go so well either. When I should be doing much better, and I often feel I am, I frequently still find myself struggling to improve my rankings. Not rare to have a lower rank on easier modes for the same chapters.

Yeah, and it seems to have a lot more going on under the hood in 4 as opposed to 3, for example. Very uneven. Sometimes you'll get SSA + No Item and only an A rank, and other times it feels like the game is being oddly lenient towards you. Strange stuff.

I hope 5 will be more in line with 3 when it comes to ranking.

Oh, and while we're on the subject (if you don't mind), what did you think of the Sanctus Diabolica boss fight at the end? Because I was really pleasantly surprised at how tightly designed it is when replaying the game. The half a dozen different sound cues are impeccable with each announcing a different attack that requires a different defensive option from the player. Great sound mixing, too. And the seamless reaction test of sorts at the end is based on the DB timing that the player has perfected over the course of the entire game instead of a meaningless QTE button prompt.

Not very spectacular, but mechanically tight and incredibly satisfying to learn and beat. One of the best boss fights in the genre, and I don't hear it mentioned very often, if at all.

As a matter of fact, getting the DB timing on that boss was one of the things I learned in this run. I was unaware that it was even possible before. Although a while back I had seen someone parry his lunge attacks with Vergil (that looks like it requires some insane timing, parrying using a move at the end of a combo!), so I did figure that Nero could do it too. First time I did it by accident, but after that it seemed pretty natural to get the timing down. Definitely makes that phase go a lot more smoothly. Never been much of a fan of the Sanctus fights in general before, because of how much he flies around and has that annoying regenerating shield. Previously the window to do damage in that last phase always seemed incredibly small, but timing the DB gives you such a bigger opening. It's pretty satisfying. I've always liked the animation and signalling of that lunge combo too. That voice line and the subtle little reeling back he does at the start of each lunge was always a great detail.

Similarly, the chapter 11 Sanctus fight is another boss I learned the timing on. Again I was never that fond of this one because of the second phase for similar reasons. But again this time I learned you can just bypass the annoying bit with a well timed DB. Took a little bit to learn the timing (the guide on the wiki is wrong), which made it very satisfying to finally pull off. In retrospect I should have realised that one earlier, given you do the same thing with the Saviour right at the end of the game.

In general I've never been good at timing these really tight DB windows on bosses. The window for them seems so tiny, and I usually can never work out if I'm too early or late, and often the risk of attempting it is really high too. Discourages me from trying. Even though I've tried it several times, I've never been able to do the one with Credo throwing his spear, to my shame.

Ha! So I'm not the only one who got annoyed by that! :P

Yeah, it's really unforgiving. But it's also immensely satisfying when you do manage to land one of these.

Speaking of Credo, I had the dubious pleasure of dying to his spear attack by way of mis-timing my DB on the 80th floor of the Bloody Palace recently (roughly one hour of progress just *poof!* - gone). But guess what. Tried again the next day, fought him low on health, saw him winding up, took a deep breath, winced, "Moment of Truth!", nailed the DB. BOOM, insane catharsis. I thought my spine was gonna crack from the tension!

Gotta love the genre.

I absolutely ate this up, really enjoyed this one. This has been such a refreshing change from the (admittedly excellent) titles I have played this year. Playing as a young woman trying to get her life back together in a small town abandoned by economic recession was one of the most realistic settings I have seen in a game despite its lovely bright cartoony exterior. I replayed this twice due to missing out on evenings where you hang out with different friends and it really felt like how I wish Animal Crossing would be, actually developing relationships with other characters that evolve as the story goes on. Despite being animals, these characters are easily the most human I have ever encountered in a game with dreams, fears and flaws. Just hanging out with different friends and helping them to lighten up, or hear their stories of sad childhoods or simply making a robot together was what really made this game such a delight for me. That a single player game managed to do socialisation so well is truly an achievement and really shows the kind of storytelling games can become capable of. I also feel its open anti-capitalist message is a subject that games would have been far less open to tackle even ten years ago when indie games were still just at the baby steps of their ascendancy. Really shows how far the indie scene has come and gives some encouraging signs of what lies in gaming’s future as a whole.

DemonTower is surprisingly addictive as well; think I get the appeal of Binding of Issac now!

Welcome to the forum! That's quite a list you've got there. May I ask what you thought of the above games? I'd be super interested in hearing someone's opinion of the 2003 FE after playing it for the first time in 2018, in particular. :)

Thanks!

Metroid: Zero Mission (2004)

This was my second Metroid game after Super, which I played in 2016, and I thought it was fantastic. I've never played the original game but Zero Mission felt very much like Super but with more streamlined controls. It's a lot shorter than Super (I think it took about 5 hours)

I didn't like the last section where you play as Zero Suit Samus, but it was a nice idea

Metroid Fusion (2002)

Fusion was also really good, and I didn't actually mind the fact it was a lot more linear. There was still enough exploration to keep me happy and the structure of the game allowed for the plot to move at a nice clip. Some of the scripted story sections were great, and the SA-X bursting out of walls was truly horrifying

I've not played Samus Returns (no 3DS) but both the GBA games left me pining for another Metroid with 2D sprites

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (2003)

I'm not sure if this is against the rules here but I posted about my experiences of this game on another forum, and documented my time with it as I played. The short version is, It's great, however I was constantly terrified my save file would be rendered unwinnable and so while I had a good time with it, it also caused me a lot of anxiety

I made it to the Dragon and died, then after despairing a little tried the whole final chapter again and somehow managed to make it

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (2004)

I think FE7 is the better game, but knowing I had the safely net of being able to grind made this game a lot less stressful, however as I played it shortly after FE7, I was also pretty good at the game and understood the systems quite well, so it was a breeze and I flew through the campaign without breaking a sweat

The animation and spritework of both the GBA FE games was incredible. I'd love to play FE6 one day, though I hear that's the hardest of the 3

Devil May Cry 4 (2008)

I played DMC1 and 3 in 2015, and really enjoyed them (3 more than 1) and I knew a lot of the issues people had with 4 before I started playing, so I think knowing what to expect (backtracking, repeated bosses) softened those issues from my perspective

I quite liked Nero, and the bosses were fun so I didn't mind fighting them a few times, and the moment to moment combat is top tier. I just hated the flying enemies that are weak to guns as they take ages to kill and hammering square doesn't require much skill

Resogun (2013)

I had a good time with this too, it looks amazing and when you get into the zone things just flow

I reached my skill level after beating the game a few times on the normal difficultly (experienced?) and struggled to get much further on hard. I only have the base game, but would have got the complete version if I'd realised how meaty the DLC was

One I hope to return to at some point

Wonderful stuff, thanks for elaborating. It's always nice to hear people being enthusiastic about games from a different era. If only to share the love!

Yeah, the GBA Metroid are timeless classics. There's nothing that scratches quite the same itch as 2D Metroid, is there? Even Castlevania isn't quite the same thing. I love Fusion as well, fantastic atmosphere and presentation.

I'm very glad you liked the two classic Fire Emblems. They are some of my all-time favourites and I wish more people would give them a chance. It's understandable that you would be anxious about an unwinnable stalemate on your first playthrough, although I've never really had this be an issue in practice. Even if all your level-ups turn out to be disastrous, you still have pre-promotes to fall back on. Oh, and the spritework and animations are indeed superb.

FE6 is fantastic, you should definitely play it if you have the chance one day, but it is indeed really difficult at times and has some... rough edges, let's put it that way. Amazing world-building, though. Whereas FE7 very much feels like the small-scale personal story of Eliwood and Hector, FE6's story encapsulates the entire continent and feels like a genuine world-changing event. It's amazing what IS has managed to pull off on a tiny little GBA cartridge.

Yeah, the flying enemies in DMC4 are rather annoying to deal with. And don't get me started on Blitz!!! But I'm glad you got something out of it, at least. Looking forward to DMC5, then?

I know, right? It feels absolutely fantastic once you get accustomed to the game. Can't recommend the DLC enough. Fixes the few issues I have with the main game and the endless modes are these completely relentless endurance tests of gaming nirvana. Pure bliss.

I've been slacking on posting thoughts on games and I have a few since my last post so I'll be very brief with them unless someone wants something more in-depth.

Oct 9 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Switch)

A simple but fun puzzle game. The motion controls from the Wii U era are awkwardly implemented on the Switch. Beating the time trials requires perfection or close to it which is why I stopped trying for 100%.

Oct 22 - Escape Goat 2 (PC)

A puzzle platformer this time. The main path of the game requires some brain power but nothing too much. The secret rooms, though, require doing things that seemingly break the levels and that is just to get into them, let alone solve them. It has that same difficulty spike of the original's optional content. Still fun.

Nov 4 - EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair (PC)

Ever wanted to play a cheesy sci-fi B movie? This is the game for you, especially good with friends. Things are never overly serious the amount of enemies thrown at you is absurd, but so is the firepower you get. Four different classes let you play in different ways and they each get their own weapons. Requiring armor pickups to increase your HP is pretty obnoxious with how scattered the drops get in the maps.

Nov 6 - Mordheim: City of the Damned (PC)

A Warhammer SRPG and... ugh. There is extremely little map variety where the bulk of the play is only on four different maps. There are only one of three secondary objectives on the maps and they are to collect enough of an item around the map, kill certain enemy units, or capture the enemies flag. Getting the scattered items is the only one that can consistently be accomplished before the enemy retreats and the map is won. Your own units can get permanent injures even if they don't get KOed during a mission and some of the injuries may as well be death with the negatives that come with it.

Doing the campaign maps are the main goal of the game and they are... ugh. You need to do the normal ones to power up your team enough to do them. The big problem is you are given too little information to complete them, constantly getting new objectives in the middle of the map. Not helped is that the enemy gets infinite reinforcements on these maps and your healing options are extremely limited. On the final map, I was saved by the game's terrible AI. Their big unit that could stomp my entire team if given the chance spent the entire map trying to get through a doorway it couldn't fit through so I ranged it to death. There was a perfectly clear path two feet to the left it could have taken to get to me within one turn.

Nov 7 - NeuroVoider (Switch)

A simple roguelite, not too much to say about it. Pretty easy except the final boss is really dumb. Died once on it when taking a single hit when I was at half life with a resurrect. Still have no idea how that killed me.

Nov 11 - Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings (Switch)

A very anime RPG, more-so than I was expecting. It does unique things (outside to its series, at least) with a much more item focus from other RPGs since you craft everything you use. Had to stop at the post-game when bosses require you to craft equipment specifically to counter them or you've already lost. One has group Death attacks so need to resist that, another has mass fire attacks so need resistance there, even another has group Hold attacks so need to null that, and so forth.

A simple but fun puzzle game. The motion controls from the Wii U era are awkwardly implemented on the Switch. Beating the time trials requires perfection or close to it which is why I stopped trying for 100%.
Man, tell me about it.

I think I did the first few times coin collections then as I realised that that was the case to get 100% - I binned it off.

I’m all for 100%’n and don’t mind that long game but that was a little too far for me.

Really fun and entertaining game, let down by the same problem the first one had: it’s too short.

It ends just as you get all the tools and start really experimenting with them. Sure there’s a bunch of hidden trinkets still to find, but I would’ve like a few more full sections of the game to test my skills.

Still very good though, I just wanted more of it.

Leaving off the games that I've put down part of the way through for one reason or another, games I've completed this year so far are;

Steamworld Dig 2
Having loved both the original and Heist, I tried not to get my hopes up for this too much, but it still easily surpassed them. A fantastic game and one of the best available on the Switch. Definitely my favourite Metroidvania I've played so far.

Cave Story
While I do respect the fact this was made by just one guy...I hate to say I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would based on its reception over the years. It is good, but I found a few things frustrating, like losing your weapon upgrades as you got hit - often making already difficult boss fights even harder as they progressed and also the fact that the second you walked into a room to save and walked back out, every single enemy in that area respawned. Again, a good game and impressively made by one person, just a few too many moments of artificial difficulty for my liking.

Gunman Clive
Not too much to say about this, takes less than an hour to complete and only cost me £1.99. It's fun though.

Oxenfree
Similarly picked this up cheap for only £3.99 while it was on sale and I'm glad I didn't pay more than that. I only did after hearing so many people say how good it was and even though I didn't think it was the kind of game I'd be into, at that price I thought I'd give it a shot. Turns out I was right, those kinda interactive novel/movie games just aren't why I play video games. The subject matter in general felt way too angsty teen for me too.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
This'll take some beating, but definitely my personal 'game of the year' so far (I know it came out in 2017...). I seldom feel compelled to collect absolutely everything in a game in order to beat it 100%, but for Mario + Rabbids I just couldn't help myself. I'm a fan of turn-based strategy/combat games most of the time, but this just scratched about every single itch I had. Loved every minute and I can't wait to try the Donkey Kong DLC eventually too.

BOXBOY!
Actually only really bought this as a short game I could pick up and play while I was moving house and most other consoles were being put away in boxes. It did that job really, a cute little puzzle game that isn't too taxing but is satisfying enough. I'm not sure it reeled me in quite enough to bother trying either of the sequels (as by and large I hear they're essentially just more of the same?), but very enjoyable for the 4 or 5 hours it gave me.

Limbo
Really loved this. I'm a sucker for a dark/broody atmosphere in a game, which is why Abe's Oddysee is one of my favourites of all time. Great satisfaction when you've worked out the puzzle for an area and I hear the spiritual sequel, Inside, is generally considered even better by most, so that's definitely now on my list.

Ratchet & Clank (original)
After the 2016 reboot disappointing me last year, I decided I'd work through the original trilogy at some point soon and remind myself why I love the series. It did just that and I'm looking forward to playing Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal soon-ish, as I already fortunately know that those are even better.

Yoku's Island Express
I really respected this game's ambition and in many ways it came close to being something I loved, but there were just a few too many frustrations for me to truly say that. Pinball-Metroidvania is great fun at times, but when it comes to backtracking it's really not and getting stuck on a table area that you've already beaten before becomes tedious when you're just trying to get somewhere quickly. Fortunately it doesn't outstay its welcome and the core story is pretty short, but I couldn't ever imagine wanting to beat this 100%. Good, just not quite great.

Steamworld Dig
Only completed this for the first time last year, but I wanted something short to play the week before my birthday as opposed to starting something bigger as I tend to get at least a game or two then, so I thought I'd just go back and play this again. It just reminded me how much I love this series and even this game, despite the sequel arguably bettering it in nearly every way. I can't wait to see what Image & Form do next.

So 10 games so far and with 25 hours on the clock on Octopath Traveler that'll probably become 11 in the next week or two. FIFA 18 also deserves an honourable mention here, as even though it's not really a game you complete, it's still my most played game this year by some distance and I can never help but sink 100+ hours into a realistic Career Mode every game.

With only a month to go I'm not sure I'll have time to 'complete' anything else after Octopath Traveler, but I certainly plan on sinking a helluva lot of time into Smash Bros. Ultimate as of next Friday.
