I think the important thing to remember is, when it comes to getting really good at any STG, the common thread among superplayers is dedicating a lot of time to playing! Not great advice, I know, but it's good to place things in perspective, and be okay at not being super-human with the genre.

There's a few interviews via shmuplations (like this one regarding Dodonpachi DaiOuJou) which I find interesting, and it's not unusual for some people to dedicate maybe 7-8 hours a day over six months.

I'm not great at shmups either, and knowing what is actually required to be insanely good at these this genre at least puts me at ease. I have more than enough fun anyway, and I've learnt to love sucking at them!

Totally agree with that. My actual tip for getting better and enjoying the process of improving is to keep setting yourself little goals with score or combo. Don't be disheartened that you're 24375664th in the world, be pleased that you just cracked 1m points that you've been working towards. How can you get 1.5m now? Where can you improve your run? That's the loop that hooks me.

Game is nowhere to be seen... I guess the date was just a placeholder.
