The Big CaR Forum Quiz 2018

Post by Alex79 »

Hullo!

I've put together a big end of year forum quiz for anyone who'd like to take part! It's eight rounds and FIFTY (thanks James ) questions. Now, we are going to have to employ a certain degree of trust here. Most the answers could be Googled fairly easily - although not all! So we just need to promise each other that we won't cheat, haha! After all, there's no prize other than to be crowned reigning forum quiz champion for the year.

I've included a ready formatted answer sheet in the spoiler tags below for anyone who wants to join in, and please could anyone playing make sure they post their own answers in spoilers too, so it doesn't spoil it for anyone else.

This is really interesting - I'd thought I'd made it too easy, but some of the rounds do appear to be more challenging than I thought! I guess it's quite hard to judge the difficulty of a quiz, because of course I already knew all the answers! Great stuff so far guys!

Post by James »

My answers. Apologies, I might've run away with myself. ;)
Spoiler: show
Round 1: The Old Ones Are The Best

1. Dunno, but they're a game developer, so probably called 'John'.
2. Complete guess, Planescape Torment. Not that I think playing D&D is a torment, I'm sure it's lovely.
3. I know Llamasoft released Polybius, but no idea what the legend is.
4. Skool Daze has a naughty kid in it. Never played it though.
5. Vector graphics are a thing. Do those games use 'em? Did you know there was a Professor Vector at Hogwarts? Taught Arithmancy, I think.

Round 2: Modern Classics

1. Atreus, wasn't it. Annoying boy.
2. Playdead Games. Playdead Studio. I know they Playdead.
3. Martin Sheen, wunnit? Charlie was a bit busy, I imagine.
4. Trial Of The Cat-like Stare. I dunno, they drink poisonous chemicals and wake up all lofty and wise and stuff. Drugs are bad, kids!
5. The Asylum Demon. The youngest of the three brothers: Asylum, Stray and Firesage. Hardly Alvin, Simon and Theodore, are they? Do, do, do-do-do-do!

Round 3: Re-masterclass

1. Bluepoint, probably. They do a lot of remasters.
2. Arro. Not sure of the spelling, but it sounds like someone saying 'hello' with a mouth full of dry roasted peanuts.
3. Wasn't there some mention of Assassin's Creed III earlier this year? Coz a load of people were throwing shade and asking about Black Flag, but they forgot it was released on current gen consoles. Silly billies!
4. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, or whatever hodge-podge combination they ended up calling it once Infinity Ward and Activision had stopped bickering.
5. Burnout Paradise! It was Burnout Paradise! Still my favourite racing game. Despite OnRush looking promising, I couldn't get on with the collision/takedown physics, most likely because I'd made the mistake of playing the Paradise remaster right before it. Oops!

Round 4: Who said that? (Which game series do the following quotes come from?)

1. That's one o' them Assassins, with the Creed. Probably the first one to say it was that old bloke who turns out to be a rummun at the end of the original game. He probably said it to Altair, trying to sound smart. Ooh, but what if someone in Origins said it, coz that's set earlier. Or Odyssey! Maybe it was said in that one, I wouldn't know.
2. Sounds like something from The Last Of Us or The Walking Dead: Season 1. Hmm... Clementine wasn't really left with anyone, so probably not her. I'll say it's from The Last Of Us when the thing happens at the end.
3. Metal Gear or Fallout? Metal Gear or Fallout? Probably Metal Gear. Kojima says 'war changes' but his characters keep doing the same crap over and over... so, I think maybe he means that 'war never changes'.
4. Fallout, then. I can hear Hellboy saying 'war never changes' as his big metal face turns to look at me, so I'm pretty confident with this one.
5. Krusty the Clown says 'Hey Hey Hey' a lot, I think. Has he been in a game. Mustabeen. Simpsons Arcade, or a Simpsons racing one?

Round 5: Anagrams (each puzzle reveals a game title, ignore punctuation)

1. A FRESH TRUNK, UNDECORATED = Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Haven't checked that, but it looks like it fits.)
2. LEGAL MEDIATORS = Lego Stair Medal (Another TT Games take on a classic franchise.)
3. MONSIEUR, PUNISH ARSE! = Super Mario Sunshine (Let's settle this once and for all... it's 'Mario' when he's small, and when he's large it's 'Super Mario', sunshine!)
4. DRAG WOOF = Wood Frag (The starting grenade for Call Of Duty: Primeval Warfare. Low impact, but damage over time if you don't have tweezers in your loadout)
5. USING MAIN SILO = U, I Sing Man Oils? (Strange game, but I reckon it might get a nod for story at the BAFTAs next year.)

Round 6: Forum Knowledge!

1. The Sausage Factory. Most people don't want to know how the sausage is made, coz of the mess. But Chris does, he wants to see it all.
2. Who was on the Resogun episode? I should know this. It's bad that I don't know, but I couldn't tell you which regular panellists were on, let alone forum guests. Och, I'm awful.
3. Wasn't he was on a Battlefield one? No, not Battlefield 1. It was an earlier Battlefield. What comes before 1 though? 3! It was Battlefield 3. Did we do a multiplayer special for that?
4. Get this, there's a Japanese company in America. Not sure Trump knows about this yet, coz he'd have marched them right oot o' there. Keep a lid on it, but it's Nintendo Of America.
5. Leon and Jay. Jay and Leon. Lovely catch up, like eavesdropping on your two drunk uncles down the pub. Drunk uncles? Drunkles!

Round 7: Name The Series (which series are these games part of?)

1. Shh. Keep quiet and nobody explodes. Wait, it's not that, it's named after a fella who wrote some books, then started paying other folks to write books for him. Now there's people making films and games and all sorts, but Tom isn't writing those either. (Tom Clancy's) Splinter Cell.
2. Did you write these questions for me? Two stealth games in a row, and two of my favourite series to boot. This ones a bit different though, because just when you think it's safe to pee in the bushes *schwip* yer dead. Hitman.
3. Have you seen a doctor about that? I mean, these forums are great and all, but I'm not sure it's the place for medical expertise. Oh, ODST? German hello. Halo.
4. Bit of stealth in ODST too. Because Spartan John was off in India or somewhere. So that's three stealth games in a row. I only mention because BAM! you didn't see Snake coming, and now it's four. Metal Gear (Solid).
5. Oh, sir, you are truly spoiling us. Did you know it's my birthday in a couple of weeks. Surely you must because this is birthday and Christmas rolled into one. Deus Ex, my good friend. I didn't even ask for this.
6. Another Tom! This one had to use his middle initial in order to register with the Adventurer's Guild. So, he goes by Tom B. Raider, but I know him as Tom.
7. I like Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, I like Michael too. This was very serious though. And that 'tache-hairstyle combo, Colin? Very '80s! If they stole any cars in Miami Vice it'd have been called Grand Theft Auto.
8. Hah, I already mentioned this game, so it must mean that I can see the future. Assassin's Creed. Now what should I do with my new found precognitive ability?
9. Oh no. I think I know this one, but I'm not sure. First thought was Professor Layton, but we had a Professor way back in the last question of round 1. Speaking of which '...and the Thousand Year Door' would be a good Harry Potter title, wouldn't it? Fitting really, because that's how long some of the books take to read! Paper Mario, innit?
10. Meat Loaf was in Fight Club, as a man who gave his life so that a bunch of people could chant his name and make Smoochy really quite upset. Bad idea making Smoochy upset, because I've seen him turn into a scary big green hulking monster. Anyway, wasn't Johnny Gat in the Saints Row games?

Round 8: Missing Word Round (dashes do not signify amount of missing letters)

1. 6. Think it's a number rather than the word. Lovely game though. Probably the Mario game I have fondest childhood memories of.
2. Just a simple word. It's two hearts living. In two separate worlds. But it is 'Sacrifice'. Gotta love Elton. Hope Rocketman is great.
3. I disagree with President Macron. That doesn't worry him I'm sure, but I think it's worth stating anyway. I also disagree with Mel Gibson on many things. Put 'em together and what have you got? Patriots.
4. Isn't it weird that this could be a Life Is Strange side story. The Adventures of Sam & Max. It's not though. This is about a dog and his... rabbit? I wanna say rabbit. Reckon they hit the hay, the beach, or the bottle. Two of those seem a little dodgy in a video game for children, so I'll plump for beach. Sam & Max Hit The Beach.
5. Back in 2010 or so, everyone seemed hot for Heavy Rain. Really hot. Then David Cage made another game where he tried to see a naked lady and we all knew for sure that he was awful. What was it called? Beyond, I think. Beyond.
6. A sixth question? Another round that's longer than the rest. Will it ever end, I wonder? Imagine if it didn't. It'd be the round Eternal, wouldn't it! Eternal.
7. Playdead made this one, I think. Not Limbo, but Inside.
8. I didn't play much of this. Just couldn't Stick with it. Stick.
9. What's a three-headed dog called? Fluffy, of course. Another Harry Potter reference. You must really love that series. Anyway, I guess you want to know what Fluffy is, rather than his name. He's a Cerberus!
10. Not a Scooby-Doo. Lots of ages in games though. Broken..., Dragon..., PEGI 12. Thankfully, when you're 36, neither PEGI ratings, nor Dragons can hurt you anymore. Stuff still breaks though. No answer here, just an existential crisis. Cheers.
Edited to change a typo in my answer to R7Q4. Would tell you what it was, but the typo wasn't that bad, you'd still totally work out the answer.

Second edit to capitalise 'Fitting' in the answer to R7Q9. Doesn't matter if you know which word I changed this time, cause it won't help you. Yes, I absolutely included extraneous text in my answers. Had to show my workings, didn't I!

Haha, glad I raised a smile.

Massive thanks, Alex, for the quiz!

Good set of questions there (50, I think, due to the two longer rounds at the end). The oldies pretty much stumped me, and the anagrams I might've made more headway on if I spent a bit more time with them. My silly streak is too impatient though. :-D

Alex - again, much appreciated for doing this, it’s very thought out and challenging !!

We need a Pokemon round in here for next year I think - If we’re going to stand any chance in next years Eurogamer Quiz.
