This was an interesting one to revisit. I like it more than I remembered, although I'm not sure if that's more than when I first played it. It's a very interesting game that tries some ambitious things, but it doesn't quite hit the landing on a lot of them. Over time I became more critical about it, but revisiting it, I think my more positive initial reaction was probably more fair.

Aesthetically it's still extremely impressive. The way it mixes the historic Paris architecture with the futuristic and augmented reality elements is great. It looks extremely stylish, but at the same time very authentic and lived in, with all the little attention to detail paid to showing the different levels of society that exist in this world and how they live. It's somewhat similar to how the recent Deus Ex games do it, but with a slightly different flavour here. Although there is a section about 2/3 of the way through where you are going through a lot of industrial areas that are a bit bland, but most of the game is very attractive. The soundtrack is excellent at mixing the same kind of thematic things together as well, mashing up modern glitchy synth with orchestral stuff. A very unique sound.

It's got a couple of pretty unique ideas when it comes to gameplay, but they're kind of hit-and-miss with how well they work. Most of the time it's a very linear Unchared-esque climby fighty adventure, but with combat more similar to the Arkham games rather than shooting. Although you do get some limited ranged options. The climbing is fine, but not that interesting. Very standard as this sort of feature goes, without much going on, feeling very automatic. At least the AR conceit means they can clearly point out ledges to jump on in a way that feels natural.

The combat though is where things get interesting. You have a number of attack strings that you can customise by swapping out what move you do for each hit. Moves themselves have one of four effect too, and the later you put a move in to a combo string, the more powerful the effect is. So you can focus on attacks that do more damage, heal you, reduce the cooldown on your special attacks, or amplify the effect of the previous move. It gives you a satisfying level of control over how you fight, and encourages you to be a bit more deliberate with your button presses. The enemy variety is pretty good too, showing a lot of variance in behaviour. Unfortunately some of them aren't that fun to fight. Some require you to use some specific special move, meaning you're spending time waiting for cooldowns that can break the flow. Robot enemies also force you to use your ranged attacks, which is nowhere near as interesting, and has an awful lock-on that is pretty uncooperative. Controls can be kind of unresponsive and clunky too. Mostly when it comes to character movement rather than attacks. It isn't a huge problem, but when it does show up, it can kill a combo string in a way that doesn't really feel fair. Being able to swap out different attacks in a string also means that the animations for them can feel a bit messy too. One move can't be designed to flow naturally in to the next, so the sense of momentum is somewhat lost. As well as every animation taking the same time can make it a bit awkward. In general the combat is pretty fun though. It has some interesting and unique ideas that get you to engage with it in a good way, and the actual impacts feel good enough. But a little bit of jank and a few poor enemies drag it down and make it feel like it isn't reaching its full potential.

The game also has sections where you go in to another character's mind and remix a major memory from their past, to change how they think and behave in the present. Another interesting idea with a lot of potential, but which doesn't really hit the mark. You watch through a sequence that is stylishly presented in an abstract cyberspace setting, where you are able to alter certain things as they come up, thus changing the consequences. The problem is that it feels kind of limited and rigid. What you can do, and the results it will have, are pretty arbitrary and restrictive. You only do it a few times throughout the game too, so it feels like the idea doesn't even come up that much. But I think it's understandable to a degree. Branching possibilities like that are notoriously difficult to do in a game, as the number of potential consequences to something like that would be near infinite. You just can't create that without infinite resources.

The story is a bit uneven too. Also has potential that it fails to realise. You play as a terrorist/bounty hunter in a world where memories have been commodified. Supposedly doing justice by taking down the megacorporation that runs this industry. It seems like it's intending to be morally grey and leave you asking questions about what actions are justified to fight oppression, and whether pain has value in life. It does leave you asking questions, but not those. Instead it feels like it doesn't really know what point it's trying to make, and hasn't really thought through its own logic, or have a good understanding of how terrorism works. It seems to have this weird inconsistency with how it deals with how a person reacts to having their memory altered. Sometimes it completely changes their life, with the new memory being instantly integrated in to everything that happened after in such a way that the person doesn't even realise anything has changed. But other times people supposedly seem like they're aware of it, as if buying a memory is the same thing as experiencing it at the moment you acquire it. And in the former case, that seems like a ruse that can't hold up. People around you would realise you were suddenly acting like a different person, or that the person themselves would be able to work out something was wrong by interacting with stuff around them. And when it comes to the terrorism stuff, the motivations for carrying out attacks and such is never really clear, nor is the intended result. It seems like whoever wrote this seemed to think terrorists are just anti-establishment types to cause wanton destruction for the sake of it. It comes across as somewhat confused. You're not asking whether you think the characters were justified in to going to such lengths, you're asking how those actions were supposed to make sense, even as you're on the side that is committing them. That said, there are a couple of interesting twists through the story. Nothing that's particularly shocking, or even unpredictable. But still, a few moments that made me think "that was neat".

Again I find it hard to not focus on criticisms, but I still do rather like this game. I still love the aesthetic and the mood it creates. That's a really big draw and I think it deserves much more credit than it usually gets. The gameplay is enjoyable enough on a base level, while also experimenting with some cool ideas that makes it stand out. It's just that they don't feel particularly polished, and like it doesn't quite stick the landing after a strong start. But still, this is a game in that sector that I have a soft spot for, for doing something different and presenting something novel, even if there are many other games out there that are much better crafted.

As usual, I include multiple playthroughs and completed Achievement/Trophy lists as separate completions. So, here we are, one week after seeing the end of the MK11 Story Mode, I today played the 50 Kasual Versus matches needed to unlock the Platinum Trophy.

Of all the Trophies on the list, that one was the one that humbled me the most. 50 matches played online, and I came out with a 19/30 record. I've got a long way to go before I feel remotely competent at this game. But for now, it remains great fun learning and improving, however slowly. :mrgreen:

I have this lined up for my Great Summer of Gaming. The problem is really one of getting stuck in - at some point your backlog fills up with absolutely massive games, as you pick the low-hanging fruit, so I have this, Pillars, and half a dozen massive 4xes sitting there staring me down at the moment. Intimidating.

@Scrustle - really enjoyed your revisiting of Amalur, Rime and Remember Me, as I liked the latter two a lot when they came out. Great point re: Amalur about the wind in games adding a lot to the dynamism of their worlds.

Well, that's credits rolled with all three character in Slay the Spire (PS4). There is an NG+ type thing which is now unlocked which allows you access to a further level with a superboss, and there's 'ascension' levels where for each level some aspect of the game is made more difficult (eg Ascension Level 1 is more difficult Elite enemies) which of course stack as you climb the levels.

Really good; I knew when I played it in Jan it was probably going to be my game of the year and that hasn't changed. I find that when PC-specific games scratch an itch, they really scratch an itch - for example Factorio, Mount and Blade, this - and it is good to see that (whether it cross-genre stuff or whatever the secret sauce is) translating to console.

I've enjoyed all three of the new series of Tomb Raider games, and this one falls in the middle. Its better than Rise of but not as good as the first game in the trilogy.

There's some great set pieces in Shadow, but they don't quite hit the highs of those shown in the Uncharted series.

It's a fun game with plenty to do once the main story is done, but I can't see me going back and doing many of the side quests.

I just found that there a bunch of small things that, together, kept me from enjoying it. It's a very different take on tactics rpg than I'm used to, but I think if those annoyances were cleaned up, I'd have been in a better mood. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of the things I didn't like stay for the sequels.

That was... ok I guess? The cut scenes and characters are pretty much best in class, but the game that hangs off them is very archaic and clunky. At least the final boss fight wasn’t as downright irritating as the first game (and the prequel).

So much of the game is based around throwing armour and health packs at you, but so many of the enemies can just one shot you anyway so there’s not a lot of point to that aspect.

I bought Street Fighter 5 at launch and after not much time spent I became, as many did, just too disgruntled with it to continue. For me personally, aside from a criminal lack of content for anyone wanting to do anything other than play online, it also just didn’t feel right as a package.

The gameplay in terms of what was there was great, but it lacked any proper CPU AI as there was no arcade mode, and the story mode that was there was a walk in the park and just an excuse for crappy cutscenes. The UI was also pretty amateurish and clunky, and the overall aesthetic was, and still is for me, probably the most bland of any Street Fighter ever.

So I put it down.

Fast forward to present day and I had a hankering for a fighting game, plus a Mayflash F300 fight stick sat unused in my cupboard. I’d heard much about how they’d improved SF5 over the years (at least it had an arcade mode now!), so I decided now was the time give it another try.

I’ve now played through all of the arcade runs added post-release a number of times. There are six different runs of varying lengths – one for each Street Fighter mainline entry including Alpha (no EX or Pocket Fighter). They tailor the available playable fighters to fit the entry in the series in question, but other than that, there are no changes to gameplay or anything else to add relevance to the old games. This means unless you’re a dedicated Ryu man, who is available in all the runs, you’ll need to play as different characters as you go. It’s all perfectly fine, and the game plays as well as it ever did, but it all feels like a bit of an afterthought (which it was!) and more of an excuse to sell me more characters than anything else. At least for me as an owner of the vanilla SF5, each run has at least twice as many locked characters that I can purchase at the store vs ones that are actually available to me, and that feels pretty shitty as someone that paid a lot of money for not a lot of game back on day one!

Overall there is actually a pervasive issue throughout the whole game with the player being constantly asked to buy extra content. Whenever I do something it feels like a little alert will pop up saying “this thing is now available to buy at the shop!”. So instead of the game rewarding me for my achievements by actually giving me something, my reward is the right to buy it, which is just terrible frankly.

The other single player mode they’ve added is the enticingly titled “general story”. This is basically a few hours of awful cutscenes punctuated by the occasional easy single-round fight. It is not very good. It is also not available to you unless you go hunting for it yourself in the PlayStation Store as a free add-on. Otherwise it just sits there greyed out in the menu, with no clues as to how your supposed access it or links to the store to download it. Utterly nonsensical.

Another gripe - the game takes a bloody age to do anything! Just starting it up takes what feels like a good few minutes, and there are lots of little loads in between virtually everything the game does, making the whole experience just feel ponderous and stuttering. There are lot of calls being made to the servers constantly, even when you’re just playing single player content, and boy does it tell you about it. “Logging into the server”, “You’re not connected to the server”, “You’ve been disconnected from the server”, “You have a message from the server”. Leave me alone you blasted server! I’m just trying to play bloody Street Fighter!!!

I wish I had more positive things to say about SF5. The core gameplay is great, and of course gameplay is king, but when there’s so much to dislike about the overall package, it can’t help but sour the whole experience. Sadly while Street Fighter 5 is potentially a great game, it is in reality an incredibly flawed, and in many weighs straight-up bad product.

A quick good word for the Mayflash F300 though – I’m not a fight stick connoisseur in the slightest, but at around £50 for a beginners stick that feels this well built and responsive you really can’t go wrong. Very impressed with it!

Street Fighter 5...not so much...

After struggling to get into Devil May Cry 5 I persevered and made it to the end. Unfortunately the game didn't click with me at all and felt so uninspired. I literally forced myself to finish it purely because I've completed all the other games in the series.

I think this game has probably killed the franchise for me, and it'll take something special for me to want to play a new release in the series in the future.

Give me DMC 2 you cowards! :D

I really enjoyed that. It’s really just a linear story told in a new way that you couldn’t do before video games existed, not actually much in the way of ‘game’ here. But it’s clever, uses a lot of environmental story telling techniques, and had me guessing at plot twists the whole way through. (And once again reminds that someone really needs to remake Sentient, because that’s a game design that needs to be on a platform capable of doing it justice, and those exist now)

If you didn’t like Gone Home or Everyone’s Gone to the Rapture, you won’t like this. But I think it might be better than both of them.

Well, well, well... After taking a month away from Sekiro to enjoy some MK11, I finally returned. Big mistake!

I was far too rusty to go into 4 straight endgame boss fights. Following a few days of doubting I'd ever finish this game, I did it!

I'm now sprinting through NG+ so that I can unlock the final ending I missed and upgrade my Prosthetic and Skills to the max. Gotta get all those Achievements! :mrgreen:

Root Letter (Vita)

Got most of the endings, certainly the ones I wanted to see including the “true” ending. It’s a bit janky with dodgy translation and localisation throughout, but it kept me interested. The protagonist is a dickhead but I kinda wonder if his style is a bit lost in translation. Either way this is a good visual novel for anyone looking for something a bit different and decidedly Japanese.
