Coincidentally played this around the time of the podcast. I've heard loads about how good this game's story/world is so was always intrigued to try it one day. I can agree that this game does have a good story. Very detailed and it's very different from the norm. It is very wordy and a bit dry, though. It was still enough to keep me coming back to see where things go and how things get resolved. There's a vast array of dialogue options depending on what you've learned and your stats and it lets you skip many combat scenarios, which is great because, ugh.

Combat is pretty mindless and very easy to thoughtlessly bash your way through since the protagonist can't die. He can be knocked out and you are put back to a specified point, but any damage on enemies remains. Almost all the items in the game exist for vendor fodder and nothing more. A small amount is for quest items and actual equipment. There's just nothing at all to the combat which makes things a bit boring.

I'm glad I played it for the story but, wow, I wish the rest of the game was up to that level. As a side note, I was playing this alongside someone else and we both ended up skipping an entire area (the same one) by complete accident so not great sign posting of not being able to go back on that section.

29-11 - Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS1)

Already done this last year, of course, but on Easy. So I replayed and streamed it on Hard, for Cane and Rinse's Twitch channel, also to get the Barry Burton ending that Leon brought up in the podcast we did on the game. DID IT!

4-12 - Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

Beat up the final boss today. Been playing this on and off ever since I got the game, more due to my scatterbrained and easily distracted approach to tackling my backlog when not playing for CaR podcasts than anything else. And of course, it had to be a CaR podcast that finally got me to sit down and get the end credits! Planning to do some of the extra stuff before the recording, if I'm able.

1st February - Dark Souls
8th February - The Gardens Between
9th February - Quarantine Circular
20th February - Night in the woods
26th March - Ape Out
16th June - Brothers
25th June - My Friend Pedro

6th October - Astral Chain
9th October - Untitled Goose Game
16th October - What Remains of Edith Finch
23rd October - Sayonara Wild Hearts

5th December - Ghostbusters

Definitely showing its age and at times not the best shooter around but I largely enjoyed it. The voice acting is largely great, the way you're embedded in the team as the newcomer is very funny and the atmosphere felt made it feel like a decent continuation of the Ghostbusters legacy.

It definitely repeats huge chunks of the originals story and several scenes felt like lazy retreads, but there were also some great new settings, ghosts and ideas that made me think "maybe a Ghostbusters 3 might work...?"

I don't know if you'd get a lot of enjoyment out of it if you didn't like the films, and there are some frustrating trademarks and difficulty spikes of the era, but I'm really glad I finally got to play it.

Just finished Prey (2017). Want to start again straightaway. Such a great game, love the crafting, exploration and sneaking about, getting some turrets set up and luring Typhon to them never gets old... And in general don't think I had such a bad impression of the combat as some. I actually enjoyed planning out stunning and GLOOing an enemy then finishing with the shotgun or the trusty wrench.

Next run through I'm going to go ham on Typhon powers as I only had the two, to avoid getting the turrets on me first time through.

Amazing game. Would have been my GOTY in 2017 had it not been for Breath of the wild.
I strongly recommend checking out the Mooncrash DLC too, well worth for anyone who enjoyed the base game and goes on sale for next to nothing pretty frequently.

It's so good. Really a benchmark for interconnected, interactive environments.

Celebrated by listening to the Cane and Rinse ep and watching the Noah Gervais video on the game. Both really enriched it for me in terms of thinking about the themes and mechanics, and made me look forward to future runs more.

Definitely going to grab those DLC's next sale; from what I've heard there's more story around the Yu family as well.

Nov 18 - Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto (PS4)
Nov 18 - Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis (PS4)
Nov 24 - Stick it to The Man! (PS4)
Dec 3 - Monument Valley (Android)

Shorter and less mentally taxing than I expected. The art style helps with the perception related puzzle platforming and is pretty but didn't rub off on me. I never felt like I was stuck, just going through motions, not a good sign when puzzles are the main hook of the game.

Dec 8 - Wandersong (Switch)

I went into it pretty blind but within ten minutes it put a big smile on my face and did little to wipe that off through the rest of the game.

Mechanically it's another game with simple puzzle platforming. But Wandersong's gameplay quirk is that the right stick is used to have the bard sing one of eight notes. The great bit is that singing has so many different effects, from bigger things like interacting with ghosts (that's Act 1 so not a spoiler) to small details like changing the colour of flowers. The effect of singing varies so it rarely gets old and I would often stop and just jam on the right stick for a minute for fun. The game has a very easy difficulty but that's clearly intentional.

The characters are interesting, even the initially 1-dimensional bard. The story takes a few nice turns and gets dark when it wants to. The world design is nicely varied through the game's acts. The art style is simple but effective. The soundtrack is good, I don't think its special, but its good enough for a game where music is a big deal. That said, I'm listening to it now. (Also the soundtrack is about 4.5 hours long for a game only twice that length.)

In short, its a colourful, charming, cutesy, silly, twee, emotional, fun adventure. If any of those words put you off, it mightn't be for you but I love it and its one of my favourite games that I played this year.

Dec 8 - Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn (PS4)

Some backstory for Ardyn. His combat style didn't do much for me. Quality wise, its with Episode Prompto, i.e. better than Gladiolus, wweaker than Ignis.

Nov 1 - Ticket to Earth (PC)
Nov 7 - The House of Da Vinci (PC)

Nov 20 - Planescape: Torment (PC)
Nov 25 - Wuppo (PC)

A simple enough action platformer that gets hampered by a lot of questionable design decisions. Numbers pop up when dealing/taking damage except the bigger the number, the bigger it appears on screen. Numbers above 10 are big enough to block incoming attacks, causing you to take a cheap hit. The few puzzles in the game are trial & error. The inventory system is very clunky, where you need to go into your inventory to take out an item before you can use it (there are shortcuts but there are loads of items and the shortcuts get used up fast). There are also a few times where you need to wait minutes (the worst was over 5 minutes doing nothing) for a tram. Realistic? Sure. Fun? No.

The thing that bugged me the most about the game is you had an entire section where you need to get a card to access the tram. Your companion stops you from going into the tram section before you get the card. The screen right next to the one you are blocked from entering has the card and you can just purchase it instead of going through this entire area. The only thing blocking you is your companion arbitrarily not letting you go there.

Nov 27 - Archaica: The Path of Light (PC)

A top down puzzle game revolving around beams of light. The goal is to redirect them to their proper goal as the proper color. This can certainly be someone's thing but for me, it had one big issue. There are too many possibilities for the items you can place. The puzzles are pretty directionless to solve and each one only has a single solution so it can be frustrating. I am very thankful of the in-game hint system it has.

Dec 3 - City of Brass (PC)

An FPS roguelite built around melee. Except there are two ranged characters that break the game in half and turn it into a cakewalk. As an example, a late boss is flying so as melee you need to dodge its attacks until it gets low enough for you to hit it. As ranged, you kill the boss in about 5 seconds. The shops in the game are a variety of genies and you have three wishes that can be used to upgrade them so you get more powerful things from them. It would be some nice choice in the run but there are three that are leaps and bounds more useful than the rest. There are also some modifiers you can turn on at the start of a run to make things easier or harder but there are no rewards to do so. This was a good idea in concept but needed more time in their execution.

Life Is Strange 2 Episode 5

Season 2 done and absolutely amazing. I hope now it is all out people will get on this as I would put it level with season one of Telltale Walking Dead as the best in the genre. Episodes 1 through to 4 are on Game Pass by the way so if you have it the whole season would cost you £6.79 currently.

Onimusha 2 - Samurai's Destiny PS2
09/12/19

What a strange sequel this is. Fundamentally not much has changed and the "resi but samurai" concept still works well but a series of bizarre and unnecessary changes and additions around the edges undermine the solid core that's been lifted from the original.

The big new addition of companion characters that aid you periodically feels undercooked with them appearing and disappearing at random, seemingly for no reason whatsoever. I was expecting it to build to something, maybe the "team" coming together at the end for a climactic encounter but it goes absolutely nowhere. I barely saw them throughout the game and I'd almost forgotten they existed by the end. The item gifting mechanic is also just plain weird.

The other notable change is the village hub area which you return to a few times throughout the first half. A pointless addition that adds nothing to the gameplay and has no relevance to the plot. Absolutely nothing of any consequence happens there and again it's forgotten about entirely in the back half.

The other environments are equally uninspired. A mine, some caves and a disappointing reuse of the first game's location fail to excite.
They're also not connected in ways that make sense with a series of jump cuts and teleports making progression feel disjointed, unintuitive and frequently confusing. The poor signposting doesn't do much to help.

There's a host of other, smaller design choices that are just baffling. As an emample, there's a one off, purpose built minigame where you rotate both analogue sticks to raise a doorway that comes out of nowhere, right in the middle of one of the game's few exciting set pieces. It's so weird it instantly sapps any tension from the sequence and stops the pacing dead. It's the only time in the whole game where the sticks are used, everything else, including movement uses the d-pad. I spent a good minute thinking my game had crashed before I realised what was going on then a further minute just sat there thinking...why?

Thankfully the combat is still fun and i was pleased to see the issun counter attack worked into boss fights this time round. I was less thrilled with fighting the same few bosses multiple times but the final few encounters are decent.

There is just enough good stuff carried over from the first game that I did enjoy it overall, almost in spite of itself. You can really feel the time and budgetary constraints the team were under here, releasing only 14 months after Warlords. The question is why, when faced with these constraints did they spend time and resources building all this superfluous nonsense?

Unlike the first, I had almost no memory of this game despite having completed it back in 2002. If nothing else this playthrough has reminded me why I'd forgotten it.

What a strange sequel this is.
Funnily enough, the hub village and companion characters are my defining memory of this game. It was so comforting going back to the village to hang out with my favourite characters after slogging through the mines. Even played it multiple times to team up with each of the optional best buddies. Those could easily be rose-tinted glasses though as I haven't revisited it in about 16 years, and those sort of RPG-lite ideas have been better used in action games since.

I'm sure those elements would have played better in 2002, they certainly would have felt more novel back then.
They're clearly ok in concept and as you say, so many action games since have expanded on the idea, but the execution is just so sloppy.
The first game was very tight, slickly produced and super polished. This one just feels like a mess of half baked ideas.

Reading up on the game, I've actually discovered that they were developed in tandem but by separate teams with different directors which explains why they feel so different.

The original team then went on to develop Onimusha 3 which I'll be playing next. I've not played it before so I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares.

Interesting about the two teams. Onimusha 3 is the one I played least, my brother had the whole trilogy on his PS2 but for one reason or another I didn't get round to the last one. Hope you enjoy it! It features an opening cinematic with action direction by the amazing Donnie Yen.

For the campaign, I'd put the story and writing at just above average (for an FPS). Probably '80s Action Movie level. Reasonable acting etc.

The story is a basic - enlist three members of the resistance who will help you with three doohickeys that will grant you access to the Big Bad's base. Do a mission for each of these to gain their trust, then do a mission to get the doohickey. Then take down the Big Bad. Pretty standard stuff. The gameplay is mostly 'take over the enemy base' a la Far Cry 3 and its ilk, with a lot of corridor and arena shooting mixed in. I barely did any of the optional open world stuff (convoys a la Mad Max, enemy outposts, kill a mini boss in an arena, kill swarms of mooks in arenas etc).

The writing does come across as pretty flat outside of the main missions - eg there are loads of quest givers in the cities and they give you a massive spiel about goons taking over their family mine, blah blah blah, and you're just going, "Yeah, yeah, go here and kill all the goons, I got it," while pressing the Skip key, so I can see how that could be seen as bad writing/story. And the world is stuffed full of stuff, but still feels like a bit of a non event and a bit sterile. Don't know if that is the writing or just my failure to engage with anything outside of the main missions.

All in all I enjoyed my time with it. The shooting is decent and there are some satisfying explosions.
