I just copy/pasted my thoughts from a YouTube comment I made a couple days back. :P I THINK this is everything I finished, but odds are good I've forgotten something.

For 2019 releases...
Metro Exodus (my GOTY, easy, one of the all-time greatest games IMHO)
RE2make (my runner-up)
Man of Medan (HIGHLY recommended since you liked Hidden Agenda and Until Dawn)
Pokemon Shield (easily the biggest disappointment of 2019, see Arlo's review on it as he echos my thoughts)
Bug Fables (strongly recommended for Paper Mario fans, it's a better version of that)

For older releases....
Mega Man Legends 2 (still holds up, still on my Top 10 list)
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (possibly the best RPG of the decade)
Killer7 (freaking excellent acid trip of a game)
Iconoclasts (one of the best games of 2018, and no one's heard of it)
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (super short, but underrated)
Resident Evil 2 (still holds up, but the remake is a better game for sure)
Seiken Densetsu 3 (again, still holds up super well, but I suspect next year's remake might be even better)
Pokemon Black 2 (possibly the best game in the series, significantly better game than Sword/Shield)

I also had a lot of games that I started, and didn't finish - the vast majority of which I wound up selling. I will also probably finish Yakuza 0 and No More Heroes 2 before year's end.

If 2019 proved anything it is that games have always been great, but they just keep getting better. From their construction to the communities around them (like this one), things just keep improving. Here’s to 2020 keeping up the push forward, and to a safe and happy holiday season for us all. If you’re ever in the San Francisco Bay Area and want to get together for some gaming let me know. Otherwise love, peace, and untitled goose grease.

PS Here’s the list of games I rolled credits on this year from most enjoyed to least as of this moment, and some three word reviews.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - My dear deer
Earthbound - Let us pray
Shadow of the Colossus Remake - Enhanced initial greatness
Fire Emblem Awakening's - Pick a God
God of War (2017) Norse family drama
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Luigi’s Mansion Three - Stylish slime solution
Ori and the Blind Forest - Sumptuous scampering spirit
Smash Brothers Ultimate - Excess of fun
Mario Maker 2 - Creativity meets community
Link’s Awakening - Stay woke Link
ABZU - Magical marine meditation
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment - Gravity defying gaiden
Shovel Knight: King of Cards Farewell my prince
Super Hot - Tell your friends
The Legend of Zelda the Minish Cap - Splendid small sprites
Super Mario World - Cape never ages
Cuphead - Twenty’s fever dream
Final Fantasy IX - Surprise jellyfish attack
Wargroove - Spiffy sprite art
Cadence of Hyrule - Ganon on organ
Metroid: Samus Returns - My pet metroid
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - Stylish stylus use
Yoshi’s Island: Beauty ages well
Super Mario 3D Land - Extra dimension required
Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Tactical tag team
Mario Maker 3DS - Teach me Yamaguchi
Inside - Sunbathing flesh potato
Katana Zero - Rewind and replay
Child of Light - Dimmed by story
Into the Breach - I’m going back
Final Fantasy XII - So much armpit
Furi - Bossed me around
Mario Brothers U - Should be special
Fire Emblem Fates - It lacked balance
Yoshi’s Crafted World - Felt forgettable, formulaic

Its more Spider-Man and doesn't do anything differently. I'll get round to the other two in the New Year.

I think this is my last completion for the year. I think I have finished more games than in the last two years but that's because there are more short ones on the list.

Anyone else wanna join me in completing the 52 Game Challenge this year (2020)?

If you haven't heard of it, it's pretty self-explanatory - but you kinda make your own rules too. Some people will count games they've played to a certain point and then said, "Yeah, that's enough for me." Others only consider it beaten if it's 100%'d or they've obtained the Platinum trophy.

I'm gonna do mine pretty simple, I have 87 games on my backlog, plus Gamepass stuff and games I wanna replay (MGS3 is probably happening this year, and maybe some podcast games). The median "How Long To Beat" for my 87 backlog games is around 9 hours, so I think it's very doable. Front Mission 3, Tictacs Ogre and Xenoblade 2 are the only uber-long ones still on the log. So I'm gonna see if I can average 1 per week.

Yeah I did that. I only knew about it after a google search because I was stuck on a song and not sure if it was broken when played on PS3 (like Cheep Cheep from the first game). Seemed much more unpredictable but overall easier.

29/10 - Lucah: Born of a Dream
14/11 - Control
24/11 - Greedfall
27/12 - Darksiders: Genesis

Talked before here and here.

Feelings mostly the same as I did before. I liked it, and it was a fun spin-off in this series. But it didn't blow my mind or anything. It's satisfying enough at the things it does, and it's pretty neat how similar it feels to the main games, and the first in particular, despite the very different presentation and level structure. Lots of fun combat, and some entertaining light Zelda-like puzzles. Some of the bosses were good, but rather hit-and-miss though, and the levels tend to drag a bit as you get in to the game. They tend to be a bit too long, making you feel like you only want to tackle one at a time. But that's also kind of good in a way I suppose, as each one is a nice compartmentalised chunk of gameplay that feels like you get something substantial each time. Bosses tend to break that a bit since they're usually their own level though. Still, the longer levels would probably benefit from being cut down a bit. I like Strife as a character too. Playing as him is fun, and something different for the series, and he has an amusing jokey personality that works well as a double act contrasting with the po-faced War, even coaxing him to let down his guard a bit on occasion.

And in a rather strange coincidence, it turns out I'm finishing this game exactly one year to the day after I finished Darksiders 3. My thoughts on Genesis are a lot less complicated and muddled than they were with 3, but I think there's an interesting comparison. Darksiders 3 varied wildly in quality. When it was good, it was actually pretty great, but when it was bad, it was miserable. After mulling it over for a while and playing the DLC though, I ended up having an overall pretty positive impression of it. Genesis however doesn't reach the same heights or depths. The highs aren't as high, and the lows aren't as low. A lot more middling. Nothing about it was especially exciting like the bosses or level design of 3, but nothing came close to driving me up the wall like some of the bad bits of that game did as well. I think I like 3 a bit more, especially after the DLC, but Genesis feels like a better put together product. Although it's still far from perfect itself.

Eh, how do you 'complete' a pinball fable? Well I'll tell you! Each table has a set of challenges, and to complete these challenges you have to reach 15 stars on each of them. They're fiendish. Like score 48 million points with one ball and stuff like that. I'm going to count completing the challenges as a completion.

:)

TWD table is brilliant, by the way. Easily my favourite FX3 fable. It's based on the Telltale game and has loads of different mission on it based on the different episodes. It's only a quid or so in the sale at the moment so give it a try.

Rough, semi-chronological list for funzos:

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Spoiler: show
Came into the year playing this, did about 120-150hrs in it as I recall. Still haven't caught all the cultists yet but beat the other two mainline quests.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Spoiler: show
M'game of the year and I nattered about it elsewhere here.
Devil May Cry 5
Spoiler: show
Halfway through another playthrough, great one to pick up and play a level or tackle a boss when I feel like a cool ass action game (and it might be one of the coolest)
Dishonored
Spoiler: show
High chaos, an absolute shambles of a run but tons of fun and can't wait to do the other two games.
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
Spoiler: show
Did a whole new NG+ run and ran circles round Bitterblack Isle while temporarily bounced off Sekiro. Love this game.
Bloodborne
Spoiler: show
Favourite game ever. Again, talked about this elsewhere but I would start a game right now if I could (I can't - I'm at a bar.)
Dark Souls Trilogy
Spoiler: show
I co-oped these with my brother which is my all-time favourite gaming experience... There's nothing like playing some of the greatest games ever made with a sibling aka a best buddy. Went back and beat the first and third games solo too.
Prey (2017)
Spoiler: show
Was just listening to the Fanbyte podcast and Danielle Riendeau called this her favourite immersive sim ever. She's got amazing taste, no questions there.
Portal
Spoiler: show
First time playing this and I loved it. I was more interested in physics during this brief Valve classic than at any time during my school years.
Into the Breach
Spoiler: show
I don't know when roguelikes should be included on a list like this, but I must have done 9 or 10 4-island runs? And I have no intention of stopping.

The Touryst

A neat, short adventure-lite experience which I couldn't put down

It's got FEZ vibes to it but doesnt really go the same lengths as that game did but overall I enjoyed exploring the holiday islands and discovering its secrets.

Probably a bit steep at 18 quid as it's only 5 hours long but really I'd take quality over quantity. I just wish the game went a little bit more crazy at the end.

Donkey Konga 1 and 2

Sat down and bongo'd my way through all the songs on medium (chimp) difficulty. One one Christmas day night and two on the following night.

Played the mini games and try their hard (gorilla) difficulty.

CTR Nitro Refuelled.

A brilliant kart racer coming close to Diddy Kong Racing but not as good for me.

It's got a decent adventure mode but I wish the overworld felt more like an adventure rather than some hubs to drive around. DKR got the adventure part down to a tee.

The controls are odd at first but are really tight and fun once you get used to them but I found going for 100% was too much of a chore as the CNK stages are too long and the AI is ridiculously brutal making replaying those stages a time consuming effort.

Overall a brilliant game rammed full of content. Worth it

This was always the best kart racer on PS1, it seems people have forgotten over time and you don't hear much positive talk about it these days. How does this update compare against the likes of Mario Kart and Sonic Racing? I'm definitely in the market for a kart racer, and treasonous as it sounds, I'm not a huge fan of the most recent Mario Kart. It's a good game, I think maybe I'm just a bit bored with the series overall lately having played most of them to absolute death.

CTR Nitro Fueled felt exactly as good as I remembered the original doing. The original had a really tactile, responsive feel for a kart racer, and the remake nailed that. Having additional tracks from the various follow-ups, which I had never played, was a massive bonus. The hub world and adventure mode is basically identical to the 1999 version so that might be why it isn't much to write home about.

But yeah, firing it up, getting online with my brother and bombing around Papu's Pyramid like we used to do crowded round the TV as kids... That was lovely.

I agree enemy racer AI feels a lot more aggressive than back in the day, was the only major difference I noticed and it wasn't additive for me either.

I didn't beat it and haven't been back to it since they put mtx in post-launch, so I don't know if that has hampered the experience at this point.

How's the CTR remake compare to the original? I still own the original, and I'd considered the new one, but $50 for it when the Crash Trilogy (for three games) cost the same felt a bit steep. Plus all I've heard about the game is how aggressively monetized it is. Just wondering if it improves enough to justify keeping an eye on.

Not played the original. The MTX is completely skippable. It's a great title, I highly recommend it for the 20 quid I paid.
