I know you think you're being hilariously anti-establishment, but this is just dumb. Plain and simple.

If you could find a way to make your case for the PC version of Ikaruga without resorting to pre-school terminology and disingenuous half-truths, that'd be great.

Christ. I would ask what the big issue is with Ikaruga but I don't want to contribute to a bizarre custody battle vibe over it. I just saw it in a sale and it's meant to be decent. Can't we talk about the game? ¯ \_(ツ)_/¯

Stan? You around Stan? We're gonna need that second thread mate... :P

Nice. I'll have a read of that thanks...

Second thread still worthwhile, wouldn't want to lose this thread but it's definitely going to be off-putting to onlookers if one of us mentions a game and it causes Kramer vs Kramer. It's been proven there are potential shmuppers out there in the C&R waters, maybe even people playing the games we are.

I wouldn't care, I've taken many recommendations from everyone here at some point with a lot of success. It's OK! Variety is good, and Ikaruga looks like something different.

I do see some kind of point about the Switch's lifespan, but that could be said about any game on any console with a PC equivalent - it's essentially a PC vs console thing which doesn't interest me. I don't get rid of my consoles these days, and I love having things on the Switch over PC for convenience reasons for sure. Ksub does raise a good point if there are actual reasons the PC port is the wiser choice though, such as lag, framerate, gameplay options, difficulty options etc etc? There is a sensible discussion to be had in here if arms can be laid down :)

I have no idea about prior Ikaruga banter, but then my mind is mush right now. Tired mush.

So there's no port differences / benefits to make a case for the PC version over the Switch version then? I would be automatically afraid of the polarity mechanics, but then Rolling Gunner has it's gimmick and enemies from all directions that shouldn't gel but does.

I could have got exceed 2nd ages ago but I think you talked me out of it and I just got the 3rd.

Think I'll watch some vids of Ikaruga when I get chance, and some of that thread.

First shmup I ever truly became obsessed with. It basically trained me to crave the grind and work through all my psychological issues in order to achieve an arbitrary goal in a video game.

Learn to play for chains and the game opens up like a sticky Venus Flytrap.

Hitting S RANK in stage one was the first time I ever realised that I could do literally anything in a video game if I put my mind to it.

ANYTHING

One important difference worth mentioning is that the PS4 version of Ikaruga actually has digital controls unlike the others. I think we went over it a few months ago in more detail.

Haze, I don't know if you still play on PS4 these days or whether or not your arcade stick would mitigate the issue on Switch, but that's another element worth considering.

I went back to Rolling Gunner for the first time in a good while. Fancied my chances with the Hori D-pad and nearly 1CC'd Casual Mode, which I still haven't done yet. I actually really fucked it because I no missed the first five stages but crumbled in a couple of the busy sections of stages 6 and 7 where there's shit coming from all sides. I feel like I can tap dodge my way through the boss patterns much better these days, though. I can just see them better. Defo down to all the Futari God time, I can pick the route much earlier and I'm less nervous. Still fucked it, mind you! I was on 99m as well, so close to the extend and I continued and beat it without dying so I know I'm on the cusp. Next time...

Sorry I talked you out of getting exceed 2nd, Haze. You were probably asking about getting the bundle and I would have just said " second one has got that colour switching mechanic and it does my head in". 3rd is by far and away the best of the bunch and the first ones a turkey so I just probably said get that one.

You're your own man though and you're finding your own taste, don't take my word as gospel about anything. I'm just some random prick on the net. Loads of people love ikaruga. It's very much a marmite game though, was just having fun with that, we've had some good conversations about it in the past.
Will be interested to see if it grabs you!

Demo on steam if you're still umming and ahhing - https://store.steampowered.com/app/253750/Ikaruga/
You’re not just some random prick on the net for God’s sake :D thanks for the demo link I’ll definitely try that. Usually these itches don’t end till I’ve got the damn thing so a demo should help... it’s almost like I’ve forgot I’ve got ESP on the way

This reads like one of my posts about Novice! Good luck and report back when done - also do a video please!! I know it’s an arse but I’d love to see it when you get it.

Cheers - I do still use my PS4 but much more infrequently purely due to where it’s set up. The switch is the most convenient (obviously) followed by the laptop, then the PS4 which stays in its sole location. Doesn’t mean I’d rule out getting more on PS4, tbh it probably needs to move back downstairs and it would get more attention. I’d like to go back to Ghost Blade again too which I have on there.

The stick can go anywhere as discussed which is nice. But I do tend to play pad more often again out of convenience. I have my old Wii U Pro Controller hooked up to the laptop now with some software, seems to work perfectly, that’s probably how I’ll try this Ikaruga demo.

If you want to play with the pad and prefer using the analogue stick when doing so, then I really think the PS4 version might be the best possible choice here. On the 360 the analogue controls feel very imprecise but the crisp, instantaneous digital input on PS4 is great. Makes a big difference to me at least.

It's also 50% cheaper than the Switch version by default, not to mention regularly discounted in the various sales.

Plus you'd have a built-in recording feature and friends leaderboards to top it all off. :P

PS: If you're going to be trying out the PC demo with the WiiU gamepad, would you mind checking how that version fares with the analogue stick? I'd be interested in some first-hand testimony.

Tried the demo... So I enjoyed it, and have beaten the stage on easy with a C rank, a couple of times now. I didn't find it too intimidating and the polarity mechanic was manageable. Not sure how chaining works, I kept losing them in the middle of killing enemies.

It's graphically cool, clinical but engaging - kinda reminds me of Psyvariar somehow but that's probably bollocks, just something about the style of it. The music is suitably exciting, and I liked the boss battle.

I'm guessing difficulty ramps up fairly quickly...

Controls? I tried both, analogue and dpad, on the Wii U controller. Both felt solid, there is definitely analogue speed control as I noticed at least two speeds when moving with the analogue as opposed to digital movement. I couldn't make a proper circle with the ship though so I'm not sure the turning is full analogue. Either way it wasn't prohibitive to control, is the point - surely if analogue control is a big issue you just use the dpad or a stick. I'd definitely rather the analogue just mimicked digital movement fully but it isn't catastrophic. I didn't have much time with it and would like to try it on stick too. I can understand only getting one stage for the demo, anything is pretty cool for free really.

???

All I said was that I took issue with your sense of humor at times. I don't think I've hidden it, have I? It's not the end of the world, just a personality difference between us. I would have stopped talking to you a long time ago if I had such a negative opinion of you as you seem to think I have.

I never in a million years asked for you to get banned. In fact, I tried to gently notify you when I thought you might be taking things too far. In fact, in the event you're referring to I was the one who tried to take a step back for a few days because I thought my own posting style might have been part of the problem, like I explained at the time.

Anyway, this is getting really embarrassing so I'll leave it at that for now. This is a nice place and these are nice people who come here in order to have fun and partake in interesting video game discussions. I don't think that reading page after page of unnecessary drama in this thread contributes to that.

Cheers lads

Ah the difficulties are easy, hard and death so I think you mean hard when you say normal? Very doable Stan!

Clip - aye that strategy I’ve been employing already! Making sure there are some blue things before using the bomb, really helps with virtually bomb chaining. It’s what makes this game so much fun - rather than desperately hoarding bombs like a mum protecting kids from a violent dad, you smash them out constantly and it’s SO satisfying

My run was mental, honestly it was like Gus at AGDQ - I was swarmed with bullets and the boss whooshing round the screen with no lives left, spamming the bomb button desperately and I was certain it was going to be Continue? but miraculously the bastard blew up instead and the credits rolled!
