I want an arcade stick pretty badly now. Ideally cheap and compatible with Switch and PS4... Anyone got any spares from all your sanwa modding and hoarding I can hound you for a deal on :D (or cheap recommendations I can get past the wife)

Same here. Been looking up a bunch of different arcade sticks these past few days.

Keeping in mind that I don't actually own one, I've heard good things about the Mayflash F500. It's not supposed to be the best right out of the box, but it's comparatively cheap, compatible with pretty much every platform (which is rare), and is also very modding friendly if you want to replace some of the parts later on.
Spoiler: show
And I even found a nice german store selling replacement parts like the Seimitsu LS-32... Aaargh, I shouldn't...

I have a Sanwa JLF stick which you can have, Haze. I swapped it out for the Seimitsu LS-32 (for preference, plenty of people use Sanwa for shmups very happily, and they're very popular for fighting games).

It's literally the stick component and ball top that I snipped from the PCB so you'd have to sand off a tiny bit of solder from the connectors but if you buy a Mayflash 500 or something, it'd be a good (and I believe straightforward) replacement for the stock stick. Not much of an offer but I'd very happily pop that in the post if you go that route, just give me a shout.

I think Mayflash stick is probably the best option if you want to use it on multiple systems, else you'd be buying a Mayflash converter, anyway, for another 25 quid or whatever.

Nice offers and info!

I ordered one of them MF adaptors but not tried it yet. Hopefully won't be a total waste of dosh.

And yeah, very much enjoyed those vids, Michiel. An audacious attempt to talk and play! If my missus comes in when I'm into a decent run on Futari, I either die or devolve into snippy grunts and cop a bollocking.

Thanks very much Stanshall & Clippa! I'll look into these and let you know if I can take up the offer. The Mayflash 101 looks alright and moddable? Cheap, crucially. I just want a stick...

I'm hesitant to ask (noob alert) but why does everyone change the sticks and buttons? Are the ones arcade sticks come with really that bad?

Cheers clippa. You're like some mad oracle for this shit. Obviously from the grid I'm looking at needing 53mm, 31.5mm, S, +B etc as a minimum :D

Actually - that Venom stick, it works for PC? Do shmups on PC require much grunt or will my i5 with integrated graphics be able to handle some Steam shmups...? I may well be interested dude! I think I only have Astebreed and Resogun on PS4, but could get more.

Obviously clippa answered this much more fully but basically, the actual 'arcade stick' you buy doesn't especially matter. It's the components that really make the difference. Size and weight are important but down to preference, in the end.

Essentially, if you take that F101 and put top of the range stick and buttons in it, it's going to be a really good stick. You might want to put something inside to add a bit of weight. You might want some little rubber non-slip pads but fundamentally, it's about the actual stick and the buttons.

The cheaper buttons can feel a bit loose, wiggly, sticky and unresponsive. The cheaper sticks can feel a bit loose or unresponsive but mostly they're just not very durable.

There are a lot of different i5's. Some integrated graphics chips are quite good now, but I'd have to know which i5 you have to make a decent guess.
Is it a laptop you've got? Do you know the model number or anything?

Hold down the windows key (between ctrl and alt) and press "R" and then type in msinfo32 and press enter and have a look what it says under "processor", then we can have a google and see how decent the graphics chip is.

Yeah, most shmups don't require much power to run, unless it's like a big modern 3d one with all the bells and whistles, you should be fine, I'd imagine.
Ah I'll have to check it out when I'm home but it's a HP EliteDesk, (small form factor G1 I think) not too bad, runs Windows 10 and I've got 8GB RAM in it - also have a reasonable laptop, again a HP but it's an ultrabook type affair. I've played Papers, Please on it! I have an older Dell XPS with an Nvidia GPU but it runs poorly these days so I've stripped it pretty much bare apps wise and only use it for some music stuff. I'm in IT by the way so am au fait with all this, just wasn't sure what PC shmups would be like in terms of what specs they'd need to run well, fingers crossed actually. It could open up a new world for me with this genre.

I might well take you up on this stick mate, I just want to be absolutely sure I will use it and justify it so it would be going to a good home :) I may even have other shmups in my PS4 library, I should check!

That's too bad about the F500. It would have been perfect for me to have a universal stick compatible with the 360, PS4, Switch & PC. I don't have the budget to buy one for every console nor the technical know-how to start building one completely from scratch. :(

Btw, on a scale of 1 to 10, how dope is Futari Ver 1.5 exactly?

Futari 1.5 is a 10.

Futari Black Label is about a 17.

Guys is there an adaptor I could get to make clippas venom thing work on Switch too? I see a few mayflash options. Just not sure which one? Really appreciate all the advice and insight people are providing here.

To reiterate again the offers to send stuff are so so generous! My original request was to say about asking for deals or trades, wasn’t meant to sound like I was asking for free stuff, pretty bowled over by the responses tbh. You are fine people.

The Mayflash Magic NS adaptor is the one I got but numb nuts Amazon delivered it to my mum's address (this was possibly my fault) so I won't be able to give it a go until at least this weekend.

As clippa said, it likely adds some degree of input lag (according to Mark_MSX's research - and he's pretty hot on the technical side of things with shmups, emulation, lag and the like) but I'm hoping it won't be significant enough for me to notice. Certainly from scouring reviews (which doesn't mean much) they've been very positive and I've not seen one mention of input lag.

Holy shit, the BL DLC is still available on the EU marketplace, even though the game itself isn't?!
What in the hell?! :o

It doesn't throw out any error message like with the DDPR DLC or anything... Could it really be that easy?

@Ksub

That's right, yeah. I bought the DLC after my JPN disc turned up. Even if you had to set up a JPN account for that purchase, it'll still work fine.

Unfortunately, I couldn't buy the Japanese DDP Resurrection DLC digitally because I think it was a physical only release in that region and came with the BL mode on the disc.

That's amazing. I'm gonna have to pounce on that while it's still available as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.

It's 2019 and I'm planning DLC purchases of JP only games on my 360, excellent.

LOL yeah. It seemed like quite a feat at the time, but watching Ben C merrily chat his way through the GnG games has diminished my sense of achievement quite a bit. :P

Love all the stick options laid out in the thread. I'm still in the market for a set of two sticks, but I want to be able to connect them to my legacy systems as well. They no longer make Cthulhu PCBs, do they?

Good god I am excited. I've never played a shmup on a stick, except at arcades. My mate has just ordered a Mayflash stick for himself too
