You heard of "Edens Aegis" by the same guy, owly?
Yeah, I kept meaning to check it out - thank you for the link.
I just installed it and it runs at 60fps full screen right away. No tinkering necessary, thank Demeter!
I don't know who this developer is, but he really nails shmup gamefeel, controls and bullet patterns for my liking. These almost feel like lost CAVE games in everything but name.
EDIT: I just found his website. It's sad that he doesn't seem to have released another game since 2010...
I was gonna suggest that you download this one too while you're at it, but I see that won't be necessary. Do they work with your stick properly?

Just installed and tested Edens Aegis, works a dream, 60fps.
How the hell are there free shmups like this?? Quality! @ksub, not tried the stick yet but I think as clippa says I'll need joytokey. Should be simple enough, they all use the usual Z, X, C and directional keys controls.
8 PC shmups installed and working now, I'll be playing them all, with DFK & Crimzon serving as the stalwarts. And some Rolling Gunner, though hammering that for three days straight (I say days, I mean the bit at the very end of the day when my family go to bed and I use my sleep time to play games...) and playing through the game on multiple difficulties several times made me need a break from that.
Speaking of which - still off the EU eshop, is Rolling Gunner. My mate who 1cc'd Neko Navy is gutted, he now wants it badly as he can't have it. I know that feeling...

I know I go on about it but I have to talk about Blue Wish Resurrection Plus
Alright, you gots me convinced. Downloading it now. Anyone up on Cho Ren Sha 68k
? Oldie but goodie freeware doujin that's a bit of a homage to the caravan shooters of the early nineties.
EDIT: Oh, I see that Haze mentioned it.
In other news, I've been practicing stage 3 and the stage 3 boss of Futari BL Original. Best I could do was beat that damned spider with only losing a single life. Problem is, when I reach him on a normal run, the rank is usually out of control and bullets are coming in thicker and especially faster, giving me a much harder time. I'll keep chipping away.

Great so, despite Eden's Aegis functioning perfectly, now it's Eden's Edge that is locked at 30fps in full screen. AND my previous workaround doesn't do anything this time.
I have newfound empathy for Michael Douglas in Falling Down
EDIT: Okay, I had to delete and uninstall the workaround database three times
while ticking various check boxes until it finally worked. And look! It's two in the morning again.
Don't do videogames, kids. Take up sane hobbies like pottery or origami instead. Learn a foreign language, go skydiving, study etruscan sculpture and develop a bond with your local wildlife. Much healthier ways to pass the time, believe me.

Glad you sorted it!
The life of a PC gamer...
I'm sure clippa has dealt with this with you already but is there no way you can upgrade? If you're just on 8? I'm a big advocate of Windows 10... I've honestly never had any problems dealing with things which used to work with Windows 7 (including various discontinued music devices / cards)and all these games I've been trying lately have worked a treat. The only slight wobble I had was funnily enough with DonDonPachi Resurrection and my stick - and that was just a simple case of me needing to switch it from PS4 mode to PS3 mode (d'oh!). The OS itself has been rock solid for me across devices at work and home.
In other news, it was my pick in our Retro Game Challenge group this week, and I've gone for Thunder Force IV
. I wanted to try out "one of them" shmup styles at some point so this is a good excuse. Anyone into this one?

I've got it on the TF Gold Pack Vol. 2 on Saturn. Awe inspiring game, but stupid hard. What group is that? Not saying I want to join, but I might just give the game another shot and play along.
Also agree on Windows 10. I had some minor compatibility issues in the early days, but ever since it's been smooth sailing. That said, for those that want to play Cho Ren Sha, run it in W98 compatibility mode!

TFIII was quite easy to complete on default settings so I was rather taken aback when I bought TFIV to find an incredibly tough game. I only ever ‘beat’ it using the 99 lives cheat.
The M2 Switch version is amazing, unsurprisingly.

@Michiel K - just a little Whatsapp group I started with a couple of mates a good while ago now, 2016 actually. A game a week, we share our scores with screenshots on Sunday nights. 137 games in!
@ratso - I've actually considered getting the Switch one, as I've read good things. It's a shame it isn't on the Megadrive Classics collection though which I do own.

Maybe, I don't know...
I'm glad 10 is working out for you guys, but personally I'm kinda terrified of the prospect of upgrading to 10 and then finding out that half of my programs run into new compatibility issues even though they ran perfectly well on 8. That would be the true horror scenario for me, especially if there's no easy way to roll back the update.
Also, I hear 10 has a tendency to automatically download a bunch of updates in the background - I don't have the fastest internet and my laptop has limited processing power, so that would be another potential issue.
As it stands right this second, everything on my laptop works as intended. I have to tinker every once in a while, but I usually find a solution. So I think I'll stick with 8 for the time being.
PS: If you have cool friends who are getting into shmups... we could always use some company, just saying!

Oh they aren't specifically into shmups I'm afraid... I think this level of obsession is perhaps unique. I do have one mate who is playing a lot of shmups with me (who I've referred to here) and I have tried to get him to join us on the forum but he just isn't into this kind of online banter so it's a non-starter. I (and therefore you guys) have definitely influenced a number of his purchases though!

I'll second this. I never played the game at the time so I can't compare but it runs like lightening
. Absolutely brick but very satisfying even on 'Kids Mode'
In fact, I'm going to get back into it on my days off this week.
As a slightly more accessible take on the same style, I'd recommend Devil Engine
. It took a while for me to properly get into it but it's great. The absorb mechanic is a satisfying defensive option which I've not really seen elsewhere.

Not to a new player, necessarily, but I find it more accessible than TFIV. I also find it a lot more readable during the levels. It definitely has that annoying instant unpredictable death thing with the bosses (basically all of them) but pretty much everything in between is really good fun and the bullet absorb mechanic is cool (and fundamental to making progress). The second hidden ship also turns it into a slightly different kind of game which is great.
It's not my favourite kind of shmup by a long way (and nor is TFIV) but it does have its charms and the devs seem like good sports, they tweaked the weapon balance on the basis of player feedback and a free expansion to come, I believe. Plus they put a secret demo of the expansion in the very first original release!

I'm starting to regret picking Thunder Force IV now
Posted: July 9th, 2019, 9:52 am
Also how long will I be classed as a "new player"? Before I develop into "that tiresome prick who plays a lot of our shmups but can't get 1cc's"?
Posted: July 9th, 2019, 10:13 am
As the proud owner of...*abacus at the ready*...one 1CC, I'd say you're in good company. Or at least, you're in company.

I’ve been playing shmups to a mediocre standard since they were invented pretty much.
I’d like to be a better player but I don’t give a shit what anyone might label me for my inability (or lack of dedication) with individual titles. I’ve been in love with actually playing the things for over four decades.

In terms of old-school side-scrolling horis, I'd like to reiterate my previous recommendation of R-Type Dimensions EX (Switch, PS4, Steam). It's a combination of two total classics and the recent re-release not only includes a new optional revamped graphical style, but also a highly accessible mode with infinite continues to balance out the original games' infamous difficulty curve(s).
Posted: July 9th, 2019, 10:56 am
Seconded. Also recommend our friend Ben’s One Credit Classics no death video for R-Type 1.
He has so far rejected my challenge to take on the utterly sadistic sequel...
By the way, the PS3 (non EX) version was a PS+ title not so long ago, just for everyone’s information.
