I'm really gonna miss Sony's conference, even if it saves me staying up till 4am. It's been a ritual with my friend for nearly 10 years now that we hang out, get pizza and play video games on the night, then watch the conference. Hope its back next year.

Outrun. Horizon Chase Zero. Mario Kart. Crash Racing. Team Sonic Racing. Virtua Racing presumably coming to the EU store soon I'd guess, too.

But yeah, I know what you mean, a modern driving game with 'real' cars would also be nice.
Kart racers are their own distinct genre, and virtua racing, outrun and horizon chase turbo are all on the simplistic side - I wouldn't really call any of them proper racing games. Maybe VR, but Outrun and HCT are essentially 'on rails' are they not?
I was literally wondering why there's no decent arcade racer on the system but in general, there hasn't been a good one lately
.

Wasn't there just a new Burnout spiritual sequel released/announced? I'm surprised there haven't been much in the way of ports - some sort of Ridge Racer compilation or a port of Outrun: Coast to Coast or one of the old Burnout games would be absolutely ideal. Weird - feels like a real gap in the market to me.

Dangerous Driving is pretty much a Burnout 3 clone but has no personality

It looks like the next Ninja Theory game has leaked which we can assume Microsoft will show tomorrow.

Fair bit of chat of late about the ethics of leaking and while I've always been pro-leak, having given it zero thought before, I'm now firmly on the side of the devs and publishers. We all enjoy these big events (to some degree) because of the reveals and the surprises and the hype - that's literally all they are! Tension and release! Why would anyone want to puncture that with the prosaic facts, besides the 'I got there first' mentality? It's not pro-consumer in any way whatsoever, it's one hundred percent pro-getting clicks.

I saw Jason Schreier talking some high-faluting nonsense on the topic in an attempt to defend this party pooper practice and then back pedalling vainly because Cory Barlog said 'hold up, Jase'.

Of course, worse than either leaks or capitalism are the aimless, rambling, bland insider scoops which serve zero purpose beyond attention seeking and ego inflating.

"If you're a fan of the modal verb hot air bonanza, you could well might possibly want to keep an eye out for what seems to be a potential computer game which may be coming before the death of the sun."

Well, I'll certainly look forward to that.

Jason is a polarising chap. He does so much good and important actual investigative journalism that I sort of understand where he’s coming from here. If you learn of something genuinely newsworthy then it should be reported. There were people who said he shouldn’t have reported on Activision deciding to make a large number of people redundant because Acti hadn’t actually told any of the people involved yet, for example.

Where that falls down is just how much ‘in the public interest’ finding out about a trailer early really is.

Thing is, if you want freedom of the press then they have to be properly free to report, even if what they’re reporting seems kinda pointless sometimes.

There’d be a lot less leaks if publishers weren’t so bad at keeping secrets, and it’s nearly always publishers that are the source of a leak rather than the developer. Witness the fact that all of Bandai Namco’s e3 stuff has leaked because... well... they put it all on their website.

I have a (completely unsubstantiated, of course) pet theory that a good number of pre-event "leaks" are actually a cleverly disguised marketing strategy organized by the publishers in order to gain and judge public interest for their upcoming product and making sure everybody tunes in for the "official" announcement later on.

The timing and nature of these things is often suspiciously similar.

I would say that is definitely true in atleast some cases these days.

It’s a super risky strategy. I’ve never met anyone that works in PR that wants anything less than total control of the release of their message. If you intentionally leak you’ve no idea if anyone will even bite, or who will report on it and who won’t. That’s almost never more effective than a combined social media and press release push.

The ‘controlled leak’ only really works as a spoiler tactic. Dropping something to undermine an announcement being made by a competitor.

But I’d be interested in knowing which leaks in recent years people do think were deliberate.

I recall being at an event in which a Rockstar employee said that RDR2 was in development and Max Payne 4 had no chance.

It was all off the cuff business to business and was about 4 or 5 years ago now. I couldve "leaked" it but chose not to out of respect for the situation and circumstance. If i was a writer for a website which needs ad revenue to pay my wage? Different story.

I have a feeling this is where a lot of things are spoken about and then passed on and on and then prepped to go right before the biggest gaming event in the world is about to happen.

I’d say that falls more into rumour territory, if it’s just ‘someone said this’ then most people would take that with a pinch of salt. Full on leaks are when video or screenshots or press release items are made public too soon.

There’s also the side category of future game features being dug out by data miners, and I’ve very little time for developers that fall foul of that, cause it’s easy to defend against.

Once information is out there, it’s out there so if you’re a news company I can understand you either report on it or are just late. But framing things like this -
What a disaster for Bandai Namco. Chances are high we’ll see all three of these games during Microsoft’s press conference on Sunday afternoon. Exciting times all around.
Is just crass. Calling the situation a disaster for the developer, before rubbing your hands in glee at how exciting it all is just makes you look like you don’t give a crap about the people effected. It’s paying the bare minimum of lip service, and changing direction to “hell yeah games!!” at quite a speed.

(That’s from a Kotaku article about Bandai Namco.)

Kotaku have always been very inconsistent, especially from the US side. Some of the best journalists in the industry file for them, but also some of the most sensationalist ones. The UK version of the site picks and choose which US articles it runs, it has its own editorial team which by and large avoids running the daftest of the US pieces.

But it means the site doesn’t seem to have a singular voice or style. Say what you will about Polygon, at least they’re consistent in how they apply their very clear political bias. You always know what you’re going to get if you read a piece on there.

While EA aren’t at the show, they are putting on a stream today... might be worth adding to the calendar.

The countdown on the website suggests it’s around 5pm today uk time. Expect to see the first footage of their single player Star Wars game from Respawn.

I don’t know, I’d love to be proven wrong but I get the sense that there’s nothing known about Animal Crossing other than its getting another entry.

With Yoshi we had some gameplay, then a few Treehouse vids, then a name, then a date. Mind, that was delayed too.

We also had a Luigi gameplay video and now that it’s playable at E3 seems very likely it’ll be this year (surely it’s got to be a Halloween release 👻).

Hopefully, there’ll be decent amount of time during the Direct (or maybe a Treehouse stream) where they lay out the details then say it’s out within the next six months.

Otherwise it’s next year.

It doesn’t feel like a Christmas type of game either, more a late summer one.

We didn’t even know about Mario Maker 2 until February, and that’s out at the end of this month. I could see it going either way - Nintendo likes to keep info close to its chest (likely to make you focus on things to buy right now), but could see the release date quietly slipping.

This is very true.

Although I feel Mario Maker has a slightly different impact and approach leading up to a release than say a new Animal Crossing game.

I get the sense that there's more broad questions and things to be addressed when it comes to a new Animal Crossing than the next entry to a make it yourself Mario game.

But mind you maybe there's not.

Suppose we'll know in a few days either way  .

Here’s an actual schedule for what EA are doing

Which is good, cause it means I can watch the Star Wars stuff then turn it off. Hehe.
