The PS2. Played it first in 2001 and still pick up games for it these days.

Got this email this morning.
OUYA & Razer Forge TV Services Shutdown

Thank you for your loyalty to OUYA Gaming and Razer Forge TV.
Hmmm? I didn't realise I had any loyalty to Ouya Gaming and Razer Forge TV. Maybe they're being sarcastic "Yeah, thanks for having our backs mate, thanks for fighting our corner, we're shutting down now, OK? You OK with that? Some friend you turned out to be"

I've heard of Ouya, but not his TV friend. So Razer must have bought Ouya, did they? I suppose it's one step up from the overrated, gaudy, flimsy plastic crap they normally sell us "Dominate your opponents, become part of the elite, instantly become skilled with this £1,000 5,000 dpi, 1,000,000hz polling rate mouse now with added jitter, acceleration to fuck up your aim and prediction to fuck up your aim even further. It's got twenty fucking buttons on it, available in ghastly neon green and "Hax0r red"."

The Ouya was created to make the Virtual Boy a sensible purchase.

Not a console, but ZX Spectrum, no question. Whether through original hardware, emulation, or more recently original hardware again, I’ve never stopped playing my favourite Spectrum games since the mid 80’s - Feud, Renegade, Shao-Lin’s Road, Elevator Action, Enduro Racer, Gauntlet, etc. are always close at hand.

You're not allowed to do that!
PC then Image
Now I've got all the games and I'm emulating your stupid consoles. I win.

I knew I was taking a gamble with that, but concluded I was keeping in the spirit of the discussion because it was effectively just a games machine, like a console. But I suppose you could also type in BASIC listings from magazines on the worst keyboard ever that were either crap or more likely just didn’t work!

I’ll fall back on Game Boy Advance SP if my Spectrum isn’t allowed. Just replace the games above with Mario Kart, F-Zero, Tony Hawks 2 and Aria of Sorrow!

How very dare you! REFEREE! We'll have to get Alex79uk in here to adjudicate. Is he allowed a speccy?

Hmmm. If he's allowed to take any console ever made with its entire back catalogue and he's choosing the Spectrum, I say he's most welcome to have it! Haha. Only joking, I absolutely loved my Amstrad, all my earliest gaming memories were on that machine and it's amazing games, but given the choice of anything ever, I'm not sure I'd go with it. Although more than one game on the system would be in my top 20 of all time.

Yeah, I loved my speccy, but even a stone cold classic like manic miner* feels really dated. It runs really slowly.

Have you definitely thought this through, stvnorman? I wouldn't want us all to get to this desert island and for you to start coveting our megadrives. A lot of retro games hold up very well but I do think you've gone a bit too far back and a bit too low powered there.

*There was a matthew smith approved remake by andy noble that sped things up nicely, that's the one to play nowadays.

Once you get to the title screen, press f1 and you can change the size of the window in there, zoom x4 works best on 1920x1080.
You can also do it from the ini file by changing the "REZ" value to 3.

I didn’t need to think it through. 70% of my top ten games ever are on there and 55% of my top twenty. And I haven’t even got to Manic Miner at that point. I’ll never, ever covet your Mickey Mouse games, and certainly not your hedgehog ones. If you ever need a second player for Streets of Rage 2 though...

Thanks for that link clippa!

Hehe, fair play.
I didn't have a megadrive myself, I've never seen the appeal of the sonic games either. Loved my snes though when I eventually got one.

I played NES and SNES games for the first time when I got the Classic Minis. Really wish I could go back in time and have them first time around. Missed out massively there. My brother actually had a Megadrive. We played a lot of Virtua Racing and an ancient isometric FIFA if I remember right.

That megadrive mini (September 19th) would make a nice present for your brother. M2 are involved so it should all be decent.

Good shout. I’ve got one on my Amazon wish list but was holding out for some hands on impressions before ordering. Which is always a risk - that NES Classic took me a couple of years to get hold of because I played that game!

I think it was Jim Sterling that said he thought nintendo were purposefully making their mini's rare to get people talking, get the nintendo brand mentioned on news sites and forums and such and get parents talking about trying their darnedest to get that nintendo thingy for little Timmy. That it was more about raising their profile and getting people to buy the switch and so on than making money from the minis.

I don't know how true that is, they'd sold 5.95 million of the nes and snes minis combined according to their latest financial report and that doesn't make them sound too rare to me, but I doubt sega would do anything similar, they'll be actively selling these to make money, they'll meet the demand and keep making them until folk stop buying them I'd imagine.

There was a drought of the snes minis I remember, maybe they purposefully did it in the lead up to christmas to get everyone banging on about them and raise the demand, people suddenly feeling like they wanted one just because they were so hard to get, before making more. It sounds like the sort of stunt a toy company would pull, I think that was Jim's reasoning.

Looks like they're pretty easy to get nowadays, according to a quick google search.
I bought one for my nephew for christmas but after a fun christmas day playing together, that's been gathering dust, far too many shinier and more exciting games on his pc and consoles to be bothering with that antique uncle crap.

PC, you didn't make a rule against emulation. 8-)

...

My serious answer would be a coin toss between the PS3 (3 generations of PS games available digitally) or the Wii U (multiple nintendo generations available digitally.)
