What classic games or series are still to be looked at by C&R that you hope get covered in the future?

Hi All,

My first post in the forums although I have been a listener for around 3-4 years now.

Like many others I look at the C&R list as a sort of gaming bucket list, containing a lot of widely considered essential games and series as well as lesser-known titles that are worthy of discussion

However, with any type of finite list, there is bound to be a glaring omission to you personally believe should be added. I've listened to Leon and the rest of the team cover the fabled excel spreadsheet of potential submissions and can't help what games or series are their waiting in the wings.

So my question is, what game or game series have the team not covered yet that you feel should be a firm favourite to be looked at next year?

The two series I am most looking forward to are the Metroid franchise and Pokemon (Although after comments from Leon I believe this may not be in the near future aha)

Thanks and sorry if this is a frequently asked question :)

Luke

Welcome to forum Luke!

For me it would have to be the Panzer Dragoon series.

I'd break it down as a single show for the first game and Zwei on Saturn, a separate all of it's own for Saga, and then I think Orta deserves it's a solo show as well.

I'll let the team off Panzer Dragoon R-Zone on the Tiger R-Zone and PD Mini on the Game Gear though!

A series I would love them to cover, always been interested in the series and they definitely feel like they are an underrated gem.

I think one of the problems with doing Panzer Dragoon is the rarity of some of the games.

I’d like to see the team do the Final Fantasy spinoffs once they’re done with mainline, at the very least there’s a lot to say about the Tactics games.

In terms of spin-offs, the tactics, Crystal Chronicles and Type-0 entries would be interesting to look at.

Unsurprisingly, all of these series (and most of the spin-offs mentioned) are on the spreadsheet.

With previous series, we recorded on a monthly cadence, but even that had to be relaxed for Final Fantasy. This was to give the team time to play each game, and also because the Volumes can quickly become swamped with series if we have more than one or two on the go at any given time. Of course, Final Fantasy is an extreme example, with a large number of very time-consuming games.

With series there's also the need for arguably more in-depth knowledge/expertise on the panel, to bring out the important, but small differences between instalments. It's a big commitment to put a series on the docket, and so we really must be sure we can do it justice.

Needless to say, Metroid and Pokemon are frequently discussed amongst the team. And I know Leon in particular would love to cover Panzer Dragoon. But you're absolutely right, Flabyo, availability of some games (and hardware) is also a factor, especially for spin-off titles that aren't always released in all territories, for example.

(Not trying to make excuses. Just being disappointingly realistic. :( )

If any series pop up here that aren't on the BIG LIST, I'll try to spot and add them. There's also the 'Game suggestions' forum thread if you have specific requests.

Cheers for starting this topic, Luke. I'd wager there'll be a series mentioned that we've not considered before. And it's always good to know what listeners are most keen for us to cover. :D

Thanks for the reply James :)

A lot of this is to help build my own personal list of games outside of the C&R list I should add to my must play pile but it's also nice to get the discussion going with people on what they see as C&R worthy.

I understand with RPG series that the long completion times can make covering a series a problem, I'm having the same issue with trying to keep up with the current Final Fantasy shows myself aha

I think I'd like to see more jrpgs, but they're so long and they've really been great doing this Final Fantasy series. Even replaying the whole series through on my own, just for fun, would kill me. But, I'd like to see Xenogears/Wild Arms/Suikoden/Legend of Dragoon covered someday.

I could happily talk about xenogears for, well, ever. Heh.

Aside from Metroid I’d like to see a little bit more from some of the series already covered on the podcast. Before tackling a new series would be nice to tie off a few missing titles

E.g

Zero escape trilogy (having covered 999)
Drakengard trilogy (having covered nier)
Donkey Konga
Monkey Island 3
Dino crisis 2
Arkham Knight

There are a few (I’m looking at you Far Cry) that I’m happy for you to leave on the list though..

Just a few old series I'd love to see covered:

Dizzy
Cannon Fodder
Lemmings
Commandos (the point and click strategy games, not the arcade game - though that would be good, too!)
Metal Slug
Bomberman

I think this thread may run the risk of just turning in to a copy of the 'suggestions for the podcast' one though...

I know it's extremely improbable given DDP Resurrection was covered in the Cave episode, and a couple of these games were also mentioned but I'd love an episode specifically on the Dodonpachi series. The original and DaiOuJou are so so good, two of the deepest and most exciting ever examples of the genre.

Also, as mentioned briefly the other week, both Gradius and Darius (plus spin-offs) would make for brilliant series/compendium episodes.

A Psikyo show would also be fantastic, Strikers, Gunbirds, Dragon Blaze, Tengai and more. All very very similar but excellent for a show.

There's a theme, yeah...

With the passion I’ve seen on here from some of you for the genre... a podcast dedicated to shmups seems like something that could be made to exist...

In a similar vain to what others have said, and I'm sure they're already on the list, I'd love to see the Dragon Quest series covered at some point after FF is done. I feel like DQ gets largely overshadowed by Final Fantasy in the west, but personally I prefer them. I recently played the first 2 games, and I found that they've aged surprisingly well for NES RPGs, I quite enjoyed them. DQ4 is extremely ambitious for an NES game. I also think the series is quite consistent quality-wise, which might be good or bad, depending upon your perspective.

With Panzer Dragoon being rereleased later this year on digital platforms, it might be more likely that the team covers it than would have been the case prior. I never played the originals so I am really hyped for it myself personally. Donkey Kong was one I had always wanted to hear getting covered so pretty happy it is finally getting a look in this volume.

As for series that I would love to see covered, I also concur with others saying Metroid would be awesome to see and I know it will be covered eventually but when is always the question.

Additional series that I would love to see get the C&R treatment are Mother, F-Zero, Kirby and Sonic. Sonic in particular would definitely take all year to cover, there have definitely been more mainline entries in that series than Mario.

I do love seeing peoples hopes for coverage for the podcast. We did try and push for double the amount of shows per volume with patreon but unfortunately we didnt hit the required goal.

I've been waiting for a Waverace show to happen for years!!!

Yeah, never played any of the Panzer Dragoon games so I cannot wait to pick it up later this year! Glad Sega is going back to some of their Saturn stuff, it was always a neglected machine when compared to their other consoles.
