04/09 - Hyper Light Drifter
05/09 - Prey (2017)
08/09 - Night in the Woods
15/09 - Hyper Light Drifter (Alt Drifter)

I was at a bit of a loss at what to play next for a little while, so I ended up going back to HLD and doing a run as the Alt Drifter. This time I wasn't being as thorough with collectables, I just wanted to see how the game differed playing as this character. Not massively to be honest, but it was still fun anyway. The differences are a change to how your main melee attack works, and having only 3HP instead of 5. So rather than a sword, you attack with a sort of palm-blast that has longer range than the sword, but a narrower area of effect. And of course the lower HP gives you less room to mess up. The increase in difficulty that would have brought was offset however, by me using a technique that I picked up from watching some speedruns, called "plinking". It's really simple, anyone can do it, but it massively increases your power output, that is very useful against enemies with larger health pools. All you need to do is fire your gun point-blank at enemies and immediately follow it up with the usual melee combo. I think it works with any gun, but used with the shotgun it can do some huge damage. Oh, and one other difference is a slight change to the story. You skip the intro sequence and initially spawn in the central town, and you don't get the visions of Judgement every time you activate four modules in each zone, as it seems you're not afflicted by the same illness as the main character. You still see visions of Anubis though.

Finished Arkham Knight. I got that 96% since I didn't bother with the Riddler trophies. The Steam PC version ran pretty well, only fell through the ground into oblivion a few times! The combat/gameplay is as good as it ever was. The Batmobile was fun, for the most part. The Riddler sections with it, less so. I found things to like with the Battle Tanks combat, but it just felt weird in a Batman game, for my tastes. It's also disappointing that certain characters get regulated to tank boss fights, instead of hand to hand, which is the basis of all combat. Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon.

The story, well, I'm probably the least impressed with that...
Spoiler: show
The Arkham Knight identity is whatever, I've been over Jason Todd since 2007. But, if the game was trying to make it a "surprise", maybe it should have mentioned Todd back in the other games, instead of this game having everyone saying "HEY, REMEMBER JASON TODD?? WELL, ANYWAY, GOOD LUCK WITH THE ARKHAM KNIGHT!" Scarecrow seems a bit out of his league, but maybe the non-comic reader couldn't care less about that. The stuff I did enjoy was the Joker in Bat's head, I thought that was a fun way to delve more into their relationship. And I really dug that last bit as Joker, with him realizing he'll be forgotten (cause serial killers and big-time criminals are never remembered...). The ending, with the mansion explosion and everything...meh. Doesn't do it for me. It all just sort of ends?
Anyway...
Asylum
Origins
City
Knight

But they're all good!

A procedurally generated roguelike dungeon crawler that is free on Android. You go through different depths, each of which presents you with an enemy arrangement on a hexagonal grid. You get one action and then they get one, so it becomes a chess-like rhythm of tactically moving across the board being careful to avoid ranged attacks and letting melee enemies get too close to eventually"solve" that depth. It is very puzzly and addictive, I have been returning to it for most of the year. Managed to actually finish a run, with only one heart piece left never mind.

19th September - Subsurface Circular

Really good detective game set entirely on an underground train with a robot investigating strange disappearances with the passengers who get on at various stops. The story gets surprisingly involved and the writing is great. It is also only two hours long which is always welcome, went through it in between cooking and getting the air con serviced last night and today basically. I like my I, Robots type stuff and this was a treat.

I bounced off this about 10-15 minutes in because I wasn't in the mood for it, but went back ahead of the upcoming podcast. I'm really happy I did as a enjoyed this a lot.

While the game probably counts as horror, I was never scared by it and think of it as a supernatural mystery. The plot may be considered a bit clichéd to those more familiar with these genres but I liked it.

I enjoyed the dialogue between the teenagers and dialogue choices had impact either just in that conversation or on their overall relationships.

The graphics aren't special but are decent and fit the game. Voice acting is quite good for a game of this size.

Looking forward to the podcast, we could get some quite differing opinions on this one.
Spoiler: show
Sep 18 - Oxenfree (PC) - New Game+

Jonas, we're in another time loop. (Paraphrased)

I really liked the the ending didn't have Alex escape. It looked that way but then after the credits it just loops back to before she goes to Edwards Island. I knew I wanted to see what was different. A lot of it plays out the same, and only the ghosts directly know its a time loop and they acknowledge this and say quite different things, usually confusing Alex. Alex seems to only subconsciously know and this results in some different dialogue and dialogue choices. Add a few extra scenes, going for some different relationship endings and hunting down anomalies (one didn't work of me) and letters (got them all) and I found the New Game+ to be quite worthwhile.

I also got the escape ending, but, as time travel is confusing, is that the Alex I played as or an alternate dimension Alex as the ghosts suggested.

I've had this on PS4 for years, and have aborted two attempts to finish it. Annoying because I was enjoying it both times, but it's not the sort of game I'll sit at the TV and play. I thought about getting it on Switch, but I have loads of Google Play Store credit from doing surveys, and it was only £3.89 on mobile so just bought it for my phone. Hopefully at last I'll be able to see it through!

I’m looking forward to the Oxenfree podcast as I wasn’t a fan of the game, but I feel as if I’m in the minority as I haven’t come across anyone that didn’t like it, so I always thought it was just me. I agree that the voice acting was good and the art style, but I just didn’t find it a very interesting story or mystery about the island. From what I remember, it didn’t have much in the way of puzzles either which I was expecting.
I did also like how it dealt with dialogue between characters though.

14. Dreams

I have a friend who is really into the Dreams community and him banging on about Dreams on Twitter all the time convinced me to at least give it a go and see what the fuss was all about and I have to say it's pretty excellent. Whilst I don't think you can ever complete Dreams due to the extensive user created content, I have finished the Media Molecule created campaign now and played some creations my mate recommended to me.

The MM campaign was really good and would appeal to anyone who was a fan of Tearaway. It mixes a few genres like platforming, point n click, rhythm game and twin stick shooter. It mixes all this as a musical too which is pretty impressive. It looks gorgeous too, almost Pixar level quality.

The breadth of creations is great too, my favourite was a game called 'A Little Perspective' which was a puzzle game similar to Monument Valley and Captain Toad I suppose.

I haven't got involved with the creation aspect as that's not something I want to spend my time doing, no matter how easy it might be. I don't think Sony and MM did a great job of showing what Dreams is and has put people off, when really it's just LittleBigPlanet but with even more scope. I'd recommend it highly based on the MM content alone and also due to it being pretty cheap in most places.

Does sound interesting, I may pick it up cheap some time. Do you know if you need PS+ to download user creations? Also, did you play in VR with Move controllers, or is it OK with just a pad?

No you don't need PS Plus as I'm not a subscriber and managed to. I didn't play any of the VR stuff as I don't have PSVR.

I'm annoyed with myself that it took me so long to get around to playing this game. Mechanically brilliant and artistically beautiful, it is easily one of the best platformers I've ever played. Going to try and hold out until the Series X arrives to play the optimised sequel!

27 - 8 Guardians (ARC)

Played through this amazing beat 'em up for Video Wizards episode 8.

27- 8 Gekirindan (ARC)

Credit fed through this one as well for Video Wizards episode 8.

17-9 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)

I played through this to get to the (hopefully) more enjoyable games in the series and that's honestly what it felt like. A bit of a slog for such a "short" game, with way too many cover shooting bits featuring enemy types that don't change up or change the scenarios up too much. Then the

zombies
show up, but there's only one type of them and they get old really fast. Done and dusted, I guess, and interesting to have experienced, but I can't say I was having a whole lot of fun.

I hope they keep making these visual novels. They have successfully got me interested in the whole Vampire: The Masquerade setting, playing Bloodlines and eagerly anticipating Bloodlines 2. And I really hope the characters from these turn up again in that game because they are really memorable, some are super likeable and others are some of the most effectively loathsome antagonists in a game I've played this year.

This one is more of a detective tale than the previous one. Coteries is probably essential to start with for the groundwork and scenario that this story hinges on, but this is a better paced and more engaging story overall. It also lands its ending much, much better.

Super Mario Galaxy, 120 stars. Absolutely incredible and my second time doing it all again with the new and improved switch version.

I don't know how it happens but one moment you're on 30 stars thinking it's gonna last forever and then suddenly you've collected another 50 and you realise you're on to the end game. Nintendo at its best, even if I think controlling Mario with the gravity stuff is a little bit too difficult for the broader audience which the Wii was intended for.

But for us types? It's near on perfect.

Been playing some retro classics in between Dark Souls sessions as the perfect antidote when I made no progress in that game. I never thought I’d beaten this before until I did and remembered everything. Interesting listening to the podcast on this one and hearing all the special moves I never even knew existed.

Dark souls:

My first time ever through this game with Bonfireside chat and Dark Calls podcasts to keep me company.
A phenomenal experience both solo and with the multiplayer elements. So many unsung heroes helping me along the way with their messages and kindness. Amongst all the despair in the game those orange messages and white/gold summon signs were the seeds of hope. Breathtaking.
