Your first four PS2 games

Post by duskvstweak »

The PS2 turned twenty today!
Instead of your favorite PS2 game, what were your first four games for the console?
(you can say your favorite if you really want to)

Mine were all bought with my PS2 on the same day (there was some kind of sale a Blockbuster the summer of 2002).

Final Fantasy X
Metal Gear Solid 2
Grand Theft Auto III
Dynasty Warriors 3

Gran Turismo 3: A-spec
Fantavision
Time Crisis II

Hmmm, not sure what came next though.

I never had a PS2 when it was new, I got one much later (but still before PS3/360 time). As such there were already loads of games out. Memory is hazy, but I'm fairly sure I actually got these games first:

Final Fantasy X
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
Metal Gear Solid 2

I'm wracking my brains for the fourth. It wasn't my choice, I bought one of the above from eBay and the seller threw in this fourth game with it. It was some sort of mech game I think, but I've also got a vague memory it was like one of those Dynasty Warriors games, but with mechs. Can't remember what it was called... I never even put the disc in the machine!

Picked up my PS2 in the evening on launch day (around November time in the UK) with Tekken Tag Tournament & Ridge Racer V I think. What did I get after that?... maybe Silent Scope(?) and TimeSplitters.

Sold all my old games and consoles to get the PS2 and didn't really regret it. Gran Turismo 3, GTA3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X and countless more certainly did not disappoint.

My favourite PS2 games of all were Shadow of Memories (a very early one) and The Getaway.

I know I had Tekken Tag and Dynasty Warriors 2, but I can’t remember what else I got that early.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam?
Yes! Just checked some screenshots and it was definitely that :)

EDIT: Huh, actually it can't have been that! The PS2 version wasn't out till 2008 and only in Japan? That's weird, I was sure it had Gundam in the title as well now you mentioned it. Looking on Wiki it seems the PS3 version actually came out first!

Not owned but played on a friend's before I got my own.

Timesplitters
SSX

Then the first I owned was Tony Hawk's 3. I remember it being the only game I got that Christmas along with the console.

After that I really can't remember what was next but I do remember playing Medal of Honor: Frontline over and over so I imagine it came pretty soon after I got the console.

This is pretty much the only generation of gaming which I genuinely omitted. I think I was at uni but I have almost no memory of the PS2 (or anything around that time) and the Xbox might as well have not existed. I remember playing Tiger Woods actually, tell a lie, and hammering the black/white buttons to add spin but that's about it. For the PS2, I literally never used one. I've never used one in my life. I watched my girlfriend's little bro play GTA Vice City while I was waiting for her to get changed or something and I think I saw my bro playing Silent Hill 2 but it held no interest for me at the time. As I've said several times, it was only with the release of the DS and then the Wii that I got back into gaming, and then it has snowballed ever since. The Wii is probably only behind the PS1 as my favourite console ever in terms of associations and memories and stories.

So, yeah, whenever I hear about the colossal runaway success and amazing library of the PS2, it feels like an alternate timeline.

Tony Hawk's 3. I remember being addicted to that game. So many great memories. 4 and Underground onwards were great fun but 3 was the classic. I recommend anyone who enjoyed the old TH games to give Project 8 on PS3/360 a chance, it's a really solid game.

I can still remember that Christmas day. Getting to the 3rd or 4th level and realising I couldn't save on a PS1 memory card so having to leave the console on all night until I could get to a shop on Boxing Day to buy a PS2 memory card.

From what I can remember my parents wouldn't happy about having to spend another £30 just to be able to save. We really take internal hard drives for granted now don't we.

20 years old eh? Utter madness.

I dont recall when I got my PS2 but I do remember travelling to Luton to see the imported console in shop which specialised in it.

I also recall GTA III being a huge motivator in me turning the console on more.

And I mean a lot more.

The PS2 is a weird one for me.

I remember being a bit disappointed with Sony's complete domination of the market in those days. Being a fan of the GameCube since it launched and of the few Xbox games I played at friends' houses, I couldn't help but hold a bit of a grudge against the PS2 for how much it outshone its direct competitors in terms of sale numbers and public perception. Not to mention my aversion to the basic DualShock design.

I ended up begrudgingly buying one very late in its life cycle for its unmissable exclusives alone, it must have been 2007 or 2008. Brand-new Slim version. I think the first four games I bought for it must have been MGS3S, both GoWs, and ahem... maybe FFX? Not completely sure about the last one. I basically grabbed as many of the popular exclusives as I could find in short succession, really.

Now though? I look back on those days as a bit of immature fanboyism and I very much love my PS2. I don't use it very often but I wouldn't part with it for the world. Despite my lack of associated childhood nostalgia, she'll always have a place in my home for her incredible library and historical significance alone.

Wow, I can’t remember what I got, when I eventually got one - as I know I had problems getting hold of one that Christmas and had to wait for the summer.

I want to say, they were;

ISS Pro Evolution
Timesplitters
SSX
Wipeout 2097

Wipeout 2097 was PS1, and the second game in the series. Maybe Wipeout Fusion?

Outside of Pc gaming, I wonder if the ps2 has the largest library of any console? Certainly one of the most diverse.

It seemed to be around *forever*. There were still plenty of great ps2 games coming out well into the ps3 / 360 launch cycle, and it got going earlier than the xbox or cube at the other end of the generation too.

It certainly dominated development. If you weren’t making a cube or Xbox exclusive, the ps2 had to be your lead platform (because you could port from it to the others fairly easily, but the other way was nightmarish. Believe me, I have first hand experience, scroll to the trivia part)

I’m fairly certain that during looking at library numbers in the past it had easily the largest console game number.

Considerably over 1000 titles, I’m pretty sure games were still being released on it up until 2012 In Japan !!

Maybe the Wii comes close off the top of my head.
