Your Favourite Game! (per console)

Post by Kez86 »

I am sure that all of us have that one perfect game. A game that we could return to without question. Something that resonates within our hearts and minds and never fails to impress us. A game that is held tightly within the grips of nostalgia, which reminds us of better times, simpler times, or just times of "OMFG that was amazing!"

However, games do evolve, age, and change, as do we all. We are all guilty of change. Yet this is something to be celebrated. So, I would like to propose that we celebrate 'Your Favourite Game' per console. That one game that defined which ever consoles you owned. So, in chronological order of oldest to latest, name that game that defined the console.

Disclaimer: There should be no shame here. If you have heart felt feelings of nostalgia for 'Bubsy 3D' on the Playstation as it reminded you of your first love, then shout from the rooftops! Don't feel shame...

Addition: where possible keep to exclusives. But if you don't want to... then don't. Im not your mother jeez. It's just a suggestion.

Now, on with the lists! Shout them from the rooftops!

Lynx: ElectroCop
MegaDrive: Sonic 3
GameBoy: Wario Land
GameBoy Advance: Zelda Minish Cap
PS1: FF9
PS2: Timesplitters
PS3: Demon Souls
Wii: Resident Evil 4
3DS: Zelda Link Between Worlds
PS Vita: Everybody's Golf
PC: Dead Cells

That's difficult to nail down one favorite game per console. Man... I'll give it a try... I'll stick to consoles/computers I've owned, although a couple I bought later in life as retro machines and never really spent much time with, I'll leave out.

Amstrad CPC464: Tai-Pan
Sega Master System: Wonderboy 3: The Dragons Trap
Sega Megadrive: Flashback
Super Nintendo: Super Mario World
PS1: Final Fantasy VII
Sega Dreamcast: Space Channel 5
Nintendo Gamecube: Viewtiful Joe
Gameboy Advance: Super Mario World
Xbox 360: Fable 2
Nintendo DS: Super Mario 64 DS
Nintendo Wii: Wii Sports
PS3: Dark Souls
Sony PSP: Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker
PS Vita: Salt & Sanctuary
PS4: Red Dead Redemption 2
Nintendo Switch: Animal Crossing New Horizons

Thats hard. A lot of those might change on any given day!

This hurts, but here we go. Limiting this to exclusives, because multiplatform releases complicate this. (or exclusive at time of release at least)

SNES: Super Metroid
PS1: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Gameboy Advance: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Dreamcast: REZ
PS2: Shadow of the Colossus
Gamecube: Resident Evil 4
DS: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Xbox: Halo: Combat Evolved
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy 2
360: Mass Effect 2
PS3: The Last of Us
PSP: Haven't finished it, but... Tactics Orge: Let Us Cling Together Remake
3DS: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Vita: I geniuenly don't like any of the at release exclusive Vita games. So Spelunky.
PS4: Bloodborne
Switch: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Cool thread.

I'll give the ones that are perhaps different to some of the more obvious ones (*save repeating like).

PS1 - Doom
PS2 - PES 5
Dreamcast - Speed Devils
N64 - Doom 64
3DS - Federation Force **has to be multiplayer
Wii U - Yoshi: Wooly World

I'm going to do like a Top 5 (roughly in order), because I can, and putting just one doesn't do a good enough job highlighting my love for certain games. And I'll also be using the BEST VERSION (or simply the version I own; not including simple remasters) of each game, so for instance, Final Fantasy V will appear on the GBA list and not the SNES list.

Genesis: Thunder Force IV, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Sonic 1, Phantasy Star IV.
SNES/SFC: Mega Man X, Terranigma, TMNT IV: Turtles In Time, Seiken Densetsu 3, Super Mario World.
PS1: Final Fantasy VII, Mega Man Legends 2, Einhander, Final Fantasy Tactics, Mega Man Legends.
PS2: Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 3.
GC: REmake, Majora's Mask, Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime, Killer7.
360: The Orange Box, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 3, Raiden Fighters: Aces, Raiden IV.
PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Portal 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mirror's Edge, Resistance 3.
Wii: Okami, The Last Story, Resident Evil 4, Fragile Dreams, Ghost Squad.
WiiU: Twilight Princess HD, Wind Waker HD, Yoshi's Woolly World, Super Mario 3D World, Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
PS4: .hack//GU: Last Recode, SOMA, Metro Exodus, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ys VIII: The Lacrimosa of Dana.
GBA: Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen, Final Fantasy V Advance, Metroid Fusion, Final Fantasy VI Advance, Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire.
DS: Chrono Trigger, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Pokemon Black/White 2, Pokemon Platinum, Pokemon Conquest.

I'm going to combine 3DS and PSP because I can't pick 5 games I love from either catalogue:
Valkyria Chronicles 3, Sonic Generations (3DS), Fire Emblem: Echoes, Metroid: Samus Returns, Tictacs Ogre: Lettuce Cling Together.

And I haven't played much on Switch, only having bought it late last year, but here's 5 games I've really enjoyed so far:
Astral Chain, Mega Man 11, Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, The Room, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2.

Overall, I'd say PS4 has the best library all-around. Like. There is a ludicrous number of 9/10 and up games on that thing, especially when you expand it to include ports and remasters. Like, every single game in that Top 5 gets a 9.5 or better from me, and I had to exclude amazing titles like Valkyria Chronicles 4 and The Witcher 3 just to limit it to 5.

Excellent point. Should include this to exclusives only where possible. Obviously with the current gaming climate not always possible. But certainly the early console eras.

Alright, here goes...

C64: Elite - Ported to everything, this is the version I played. Captured my imagination like nothing else, even if i was too young to properly play it.

Amiga: Syndicate - I felt like I was doing something illegal playing this as an 8 year old.

NES: Castlevania 3 - 8 bit masterpiece. Still play it regularly.

Master System: Phantasy Star - Came to this very late, still loved it.

PC Engine: Rondo of Blood - The greatest gift the Wii Virtual Console gave me.

SNES: Super Mario World - Then and now, my favourite 2D platformer. Perfection.

Megadrive: Streets of Rage - Sequel is better but this was by far my most played game on the system. Mainly because everyone owned it!

Gameboy: Link's Awakening - Wonderful memories of playing this under my duvet, long after I should have gone to sleep.

Playstation: FF7 - Introduction to a genre.

Saturn: Panzer Dragoon - Art style and tone felt magical to me. Gameplay wasn't bad either.

N64: Goldeneye - Ungodly numbers of hours dumped into this with friends.

GBA: Aria of Sorrow - As good as SOTN. Maybe better?

Dreamcast: Bangai-0 - Even loved the bizarre control scheme.

PS2: MGS2 - Series favourite. Loved the "twist"!

Gamecube: Resi 4 - Mind blowing in 2005. Still peerless.

Xbox: Halo - Revolutionary. Cherished memories of multi- room 8 player lan play with friends.

PSP: Lumines - The world still melts away when I play this.

360: Halo 3 - Played online multiplayer for years. Still not been bettered for me.

PS3: Demon's Souls - Imported from US. Playing blind before the internet dissected it was maddening and wonderful in equal measure.

Wii: Mario Galaxy 2 - Unimaginably creative level design. Just stunning.

DS: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - The DS was made for games like this.

3ds: Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - Pleasant launch line up surprise for a console I generally didn't get on with.

Wii U: Bayonetta 2 - Still can't quite believe this happened.

Ps4: Bloodborne - Action horror masterpiece. My favourite From Soft game.

Vita: Persona 4 Golden - Made my commute arguably the best part of my day for months.

Switch: BOTW - Pure Nintendo magic. Unbelievably good.

PC: Deus Ex - The peak of the immersive sim genre. Still my favourite.

Game Boy Advance - Wario Land 4

Did you ever play Severed or Gravity Rush? Severed was brilliant touch based MetroidVania type game where you had to hack off monsters limbs. Really fun. Gravity Rush I was less enamoured with, but it had its fans.

Vita: I genuinely don't like any of the at release exclusive Vita games.
Wow!

I implore you to rethink this... The Vita had plenty of great exclusives! Me I'm torn between Persona 4: The Golden, TxK, Lumines: Electronic Symphony, WipeOut 2048, Killzone Mercenary, Super Stardust Delta, Tearaway (yes I'm counting that - the Vita version is THE way to play this game with features of the system so well used in the game not being available on PS4). I even loved Little Big Planet Vita Edition. Did you really dislike all of these that much? Genuine question. Different story if you didn't play them though of course.

Obviously there are countless games which enjoyed ports on other systems (or were ports themselves) such as the many visual novel games I love that system for, but damn, the Vita still had decent exclusives. I always thought the narrative that it had "no games" was beyond ludicrous, personally.

Persona 4 : Golden is great, but it's an overhaul of a game I played and loved first on PS2. I've tried and never really got on with Lumines, Wipeout and the Super Stardust games, despite seeing their quality. I didn't like TxK and Killzone Mercenary. I like the system a lot, but mainly for indie games and PS1 classics.

Oof, this is a tough one. Going off the top 50 games list I made earlier, I guess mine would have to be...

NES: Castlevania III: Draculas Curse
Game Boy: Mega Man IV
SNES: Final Fantasy V
Playstation: Klonoa- door to panthomile
Playstation 2: Kingdom Hearts
Gamecube: Super Smash Bros Meelee
Gameboy Advance: Metroid Fusion
Nintendo DS: Kirby super star ultra
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy 2
PS3: Shovel Knight (Exclusive: Flower)
PC: Undertale
Nintendo Switch: Celes- no Hollow Kni - no, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze? gah. This is the hardest one. Damn Recency Bias. I'm currently riding high off Donkey Kong, but...Hollow Knight? Maybe?

When it comes to favourites my list just ends up being a rather predictable first party tirade of Mario games but I've got a lot of affection for third party games.

Always tough doing these lists because I want to show my wicked cult games that no one else liked but in reality, Mario, Sonic and Ratchet and Clank wins most of the time.

Oof! Thank you, Kez86. Thank you very much! :P

Sticking just to consoles I had a lot of access to (at home/school/friends) rather than every console I've played. Included a few home computers, because I only ever used them for games, so they were very much my console precursors.

BBC Micro - Adventure
ZX Spectrum - Sinclair Action Pack (for the Magnum Light Phaser)
Commodore 64 - Paperboy
Game Boy - Tetris
Game Gear - Sonic Chaos (aka Sonic & Tails)
SNES - A Link To... Super Street Fighter II
PlayStation - Metal Gear Solid
N64 - Goldeneye 007
PS2 - Okami
DS - Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
PSP - Burnout: Legends
Xbox 360 - BioShock
PS3 - Demon's Souls
Wii - Wii Sports
3DS - Super Mario 3D Land
PS Vita - The Binding Of Isaac(: Rebirth)
Wii U - Mario Kart 8
Xbox One - Hitman
PS4 - Bloodborne
Switch - The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

...I think.

(Already had to edit this once, when I remembered that I predominantly played Hitman on Xbox One, and not PC. )
