I'm all over the place re. 2012 at the moment. In the past week I've veered from 'worst year of this generation' to 'actually pretty impressive'. I'll settle down to write a year in review article and let the writing lead me to whatever conclusion it will. After that I'll try to organise a top 5 list - though I'll probably expire in the attempt.

Excellent thread, Ryan. Lots of interesting discussion. :)

Ah Right, I was actually going to say that I may have...done the tally...today...because I was bored (cough) So if you make any changes to your top 5 I could just factor that change into the results I have, and then pass the top 10 onto you. lol

I already know what the top 10 are though

Many thanks for your votes, it was a fun little thread to follow. The top two results clearly show how popular downloadable games have become this year. They're a business model that will continue to grow and probably take over from the traditional high budget, boxed product. Happy New Year :)

1st - THE WALKING DEAD - 77 points
Image

2nd - JOURNEY - 76 points
Image

3RD - MASS EFFECT 3 - 42 points

4th - DISHONORED - 35 points
Image

5th - XCOM - 22 points

6th - FORZA HORIZON - 21 points
7th - FEZ - 19 points
8th - BORDERLANDS 2 - 15 points
9th - SLEEPING DOGS - 13 points
10th - BINARY DOMAIN & MAX PAYNE 3 - 12 points

They show no such thing.

I'm quite happy to see Walking Dead and Journey up there as I share the enthusiasm. Less so with Mass Effect 3. I wonder if Far Cry 3 would have done even better if it had come out earlier.

Amusing that Binary Domain & Max Payne 3 should tie. Darren F and I much preferred the former to the latter while Karl felt completely the opposite.

Glad FEZ is on there. I was worried people would forget about it.

This came out mostly as I was expecting and it feels pretty much spot on. Good taste all round I feel and shows that quality does rise to the top in the end.

Apart from Dishonored that's a pretty fair top 10.

Top 5 of the year:

1. Binary Domain
2. Dragon's Dogma
3. Asura's Wrath
4. Dust: An Elysian Tail
5. Double Dragon Neon

In many ways this is a list of games that not only excelled, but did so with no prior expectations. There were disappointments like Resi 6 and Darksiders 2, the predictably good such as Halo 4 and Dead or Alive 5, and these - which basically came out of nowhere and brightened up the year more than could have been reasonably expected.

DD Neon's an odd fish, because it's pretty average apart from its presentation and general vibe which are both completely off the charts with 80's inspired magic. Skullmageddon's the villain of the year, hands down.

Handsome Jack has to be villain of the last year.

When he pilots a helicopter upside down or sings along to the end credits theme, then he's in with a chance.

I definitely would have voted for Far Cry 3 if I'd played it when I voted. It's probably not my favourite game of the year, but definitely top 3, and could possibly steal my top spot if I'm still playing it in a few weeks.

I thought of another game released this year which should have made top 5 - albeit rather cheekily : Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition...

Surprised Sleeping Dogs didn't fare better. It was a 9/10 game for me, let down by its relatively short length alone. It was way better than GTA 4, any of the Saints Row games and was one of the best games I've played in the last 5 years, let alone this year.
