Add The Wonderful 101 to my lost list. My mind has melted.

Hated it. Bland, overly wrought and lacking any interesting story. Where were the mechanics? Honestly, if I have to sit through two hours of pacing around a badly lit house (with inexplicably locked doors) at an interminable pace, the least the game could do is flash some breasts my way to make the whole thing almost worthwhile.
Loved every second. I don't want to say a single thing about it that could spoil the discovery for anyone reading this. A wonderful demonstration of the power of storytelling through exploration in an interactive setting. Apologies for the hyperbole, but I honestly don't want to say anything beyond 'play this game'. Oh, and that I find myself really wanting to meet Sam, Lonnie and Katie.
Running total = 58

Finally decided to finish off the Black Ops 2 campaign after buying it back at launch and only really spending time online. It actually really picked up in the second half with some cool set pieces.
I said I wasn't going to pick up Ghosts but who am I kidding. I will however wait and grab it on the PS4.

The first thing to note that it is too long, I kinda wish they had picked either the first location, or the second, and fleshed that out a little instead of going overboard. It felt at the end like it needed a good editor. Everything else though feels great, especially when it comes to the weapon crafting which is a system of genius at times. Allowing you to create tons of weapon combinations it can be very satisfying to build a master of destruction that fires acid rounds. The franchise does need a rest though but really enjoyed it. Really makes me want to replay the first.

I agree, an editor was needed (among other things) and I believe my first playthrough (on Impossible) was around 21 hours. I've completed it 6 times now and have completed it as quickly as 7 hours so it can be cut considerably, but if you explore (as I did) then there is too much. My problems go far beyond its length however.delb2k wrote: Dead Space 3

Never had the chance to play it myself, but I know many who rave about it. As a real fan of Silent Hill games it's something I'm looking forward to playing at some point.arry_g wrote: Can anyone confirm if SH: Shattered Memories is any good? Re: Games completed 2013
I really liked it but it is nothing like a Silent hill that has ever come before. There is no combat, it is more about the journey and the story with some very minor puzzle sections so it depends what you want out your Silent Hill. The atmosphere and story is what made me progress, not the mechanics.arry_g wrote:August - Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (SNES)

I suspect we would share many of those, I had a few other but did not want to bog down the thread. I did enjoy playing it but it has more than a decent amount of niggles that made me wish they had been a lot more focused during the development. Dead space is a series that just seems to have gone for the bigger is better approach without the necessary balancing and design work that is required in the background.NokkonWud wrote: I agree, an editor was needed (among other things) and I believe my first playthrough (on Impossible) was around 21 hours. It's pretty good and of the modern silent hills it's the best by far(though I know thats not saying much) its totally worth a play if you want a different take on the series. Can anyone confirm if SH: Shattered Memories is any good? Hitman:Absolution-You know I thought that agent 47 was the worst protagonist of a game franchise ever but after playing absolution I no longer think that,I now think that he's the worst protagonist and worst hitman I've ever seen! The story is so bad it hurts to see and not in a funny or entertening way it's just boring at every turn you spend half of the game running from cops or what not and the levels where you're actually have an arena to kill someone are tiny and a over very quickly,I didnt play much of blood money but I remember them being way bigger in that game, and if they did that to put more sense in to why you were killing the people it didnt work because I didnt know why I was killing half of the people anyway.
Gameplay wise it's fine,I mean yeah you can pretty much go guns blazing and be fine which goes pretty much against what a stealth game should be but it was fun to just kill everybody once in that shooting range for making me play that stupid minigame until I reloaded and discovered a way to bypass it, the checkpoint system though is utterly broken what's the point of saving only or position in the level if you're gonna reset everything else!?I would complain about the AI being dumb as a door but I played on normal so Its likely that is way smarter on higher difficulties,Im also really torn on the whole disguise mechanic on one hand it's fair that you would have something to counter the disguise so that the player cant just put one on and have nothing to worry about but on the other hand it makes the bloody things useless in some areas so whats the point of having them?If im honest the best thing in the game was the scoring system which is kinda of silly but it was what kept me playing trying to do my best to get the highest score possible.
So yeah I was a bit underwhelming to say the least.

Ultratron
Hotline Miami
If anyone hasn't played the Puppygames games (Revenge of the Titans, Titan Attacks, Droid Assault, Ultratron) I highly recommend all of them. Typically arcade-y, "retro modern" games that all play very well and have a very strong visual style about them that's instantly recognisable. Ultratron is their take on the dual stick shooter subgenre (as evidenced by the name) and is great for a smattering of action if you've got a little bit of time spare; takes less than an hour to beat the first 40 levels (after which the game starts recycling enemies and bosses).
After that, I found out that Hotline Miami had a Mac version, so I put that on. Quite violent. Would've liked if certain sections weren't designed to force you to use trial-and-error to beat them, though. In a game that encourages (on some level) paying attention to the surroundings and enemies to make it through, having something arbitrarily kill you that you can't possibly know about is a bit of a slap in the face. Even worse is when you're respawned with less than a second to move out of the way of it killing you again. Still, the whole thing was pretty fun; or at least it was intense. I have to wonder how many playstyles there can really be with it, though. From the array of masks, it'd seem like there's a lot, yet for the most part you have to use melee weapons to avoid being swarmed and shot to pieces, and so the mask that gives you a knife to start with seems like the only useful option.

Katamari Damacy (PS2/PS3) I remember reading about this on GameCentral back when it first came out in Japan and being annoyed that it never saw a UK release. Regardless of where the series has gone post-Takahashi, I think the original deserves to be remembered as a genuine PS2 classic. The presentation and soundtrack are the things that'll probably leave the most long-lasting impressions but there's also a really satisfying, well implemented mechanic at its core which, crucially, is never allowed to outstay its welcome. It also costs less than £8 from the US PSN store at the moment. Bargain.PressEscToExit wrote:Frog Fractions (PC/Browser)

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS3) I probably got about 2/3 of the way through the PS2 version of this back in the day and it scrubs up pretty nicely in HD to the extent that it looks almost exactly like the SD version does in my head. I wasn't bowled over by the game on either occasion but it remains an entertaining, solid enough platformer and sort of academically interesting as a transitional step towards the work Naughty Dog are currently doing. I haven't played any of the other games in the series but I reckon I'll give them a go in the coming months.
Re: Games completed 2013
Finished Brothers. Thought it was great, but if I had one minor quibble it would be that the character design on the two brothers was a bit non descript. Had they had a bit more character I would have really emotionally invested in them. That said, there is a lot to love in this game, and some of the haunting imagery will stay with me for a long time.

Bizarrely it's been 4 years since I touched my save file on that game, polished off new game+ while I was there. Still a classic!
Re: Games completed 2013

Great game. Some of the controls took some getting used to and I never got the hang of dealing with some of the ghosts but other than that I'm finding it hard to fault it.
Graphically I'd say it's one of the best looking games on 3DS.
Still some work to do clearing gems and Boos but I finished the story.
Rayman Legends (PC)
I only bought this because Origins was a pre order bonus and I wanted it on PC so I might finally play it. Still haven't played much of Origins but as soon as I downloaded Legends I've barely touched anything else.
I still prefer the basic running and jumping controls in the New Super Mario games but in pretty any other way I can think of Legends might just be the most fun I've had with a 2D platformer.
I do wish I had a Wii U to play it on though. They did a good job porting the Wii U levels over to PC but it never feels like the right way to be playing.
Again, finished the story but still plenty more to do.
