Didn't that version have an infamously troubled development? It got delayed over and over, to the point where people thought it was never coming out. Even by the standards of Gran Turismo. That's what I heard at least. And after all that, they still couldn't get in a career mode?

Yes, it's the PSP release of the series.

So, I was fully aware of the PSP version having no career mode to be honest and yeah, it does kind of suck on the cover of things.

It's true, your race options are as simple as single races, which is as dull as dull.

However, there's gold in dem dere hills. For myself at least.

The beauty in this release I feel is in the challenge mode. Something that GT Sport also shone very brightly in personally and elevated it into one of my favourite arcade/sim driving games of all time.

I'm a bit niche perhaps that I like motorsport, I've done quite a bit of track driving myself and I can redo and redo sections of track until I meet the Gold badge or pass enough other drivers until I meet the goal. I actively seek these type of driving challenges out.

I appreciate the difference in the vehicles and the individuality that that gives them, couple that with being told that it's possible to take a certain vehicle through a section or few laps of a track at a set target time and that's video game driving bliss for me.

The PSP delivers this in handheld form, sat on the sofa for a quick hour or so. You do have to get through the first eight or nine more mundane challenges like break zones and drafting lessons but after that you reach the challenge sections which are a lot harder to master and achieve.

Also, the load times are loooong but thankfully, restarting a challenge isn't too long at all, it's just the menu switching that takes a while to load from the UMD.

Another bad point is that you can't configure the controls for the challenge mode and as someone that prefers to play with manual gearing - being forced to play in automatic is a shame.

I paid £7 delivered for this from eBay and its already delivered for me, if I was waiting for this game to release and paid £50 for it - I'd likely feel less enthused by it.

So I’ve been playing Nier Automata, got up to the points just past the boss at the fairground and... I think I’m done.

I can see why people like it, but I just... don’t. I don’t like the aesthetic, but mainly it’s that I really dislike the ‘if you’re die you have to find your corpse or be punished’ mechanic.

I hate that mechanic. To the point where now if I find out it’s in a game, I may just not even try that game at all. It ruined Hollow Knight for me, it’s pretty much killed my interest in this.

Rocket League

I love and hate this game. Good nights are great. Link-up play and goals, saves, there are times when I feel like it's all just clicking. Other nights I jump over the ball constantly, crash into teammates, leave the goal open for the opposition, it reminds me of IRL golf in that respect how wildly your performance can differ from session to session. At my skill level at least.

A night off tonight and then I'll have another go at the weekend.

(Ksub - always a pleasure but last night I am sorry I was not the teammate you deserved!!!)

Ah, it's absolutely no problem mate! We all have good days and bad days with stuff like this. I've climbed a bit these past few days so the matchmaking might have been a bit imbalanced, too. And if anything, that means we'll all face easier opponents next time around. :)

I'm a bit worried you preemptively announced your Friday evening mead-gulping ahead of time, though!

I never played the Gran Turismo PSP game after I heard about bare bones it was, really odd they didn't make a fully fledged GT game for the console as I'm sure it would have sold really well and shifted more consoles. I know I would have bought it had been a 'proper' GT game with career mode etc. Also a shame they never did a Gran Turismo Vita game.

I wonder if the PS5 will launch with a GT game? I really hope so as it's been a long time since GT Sport and even though it takes them a long time to make GT games, I think I remember Yamauchi saying a couple of years ago that development shouldn't take as long going forward.

Ah please don't worry :D Alcohol is not a problem for me and I don't think I'm in denial  I like a beer at the weekends, I have a stressful job and life in general and a beer is a welcome reward. I tend not to drink during the week.

Oh lol

I actually think a little beer helps me mate. I am more relaxed, it's a bit like playing pool at the pub after a pint. I'll make better decisions and be less fucked off when things don't work out. Last night I was stressed out already and wound up in general, I should not have turned on Rocket League but I did.

Valerian tea also has this impact on me, perhaps I'll have one of those before a midweek session next time

(also, reznorock was *shit faced* which I could tell, and leads to him ball-chasing and crashing into me incessantly. Once I'm aware of this it adds to my own tension and stress levels while playing. Again with a beer or valerian in me, I give far less of a shit meaning my performance doesn't have a knock-on hit)

I also don't want Rocket League to turn into a game I have to win at to enjoy it. I love it for the fun of playing with my friends, when it's not fun for whatever reason, it's time to turn it off and wait till it is again!

It's great. I also take valerian root capsules sometimes for a bigger hit. Good for stress, anxiety, tension etc and can help with restful sleep - and it's just a herbal remedy. It smells like cats piss mind. Everything comes at a cost

I'm also not a fan of this mechanic.
I'll say that, other than testing yourself, there is no requirement to play this game on any of the higher difficulty levels. Normal gives you full control (no use of the auto chips) without the enemies being able to stun-lock you (too much) - and there is a chip that prevents your character being stun-locked (combined with auto heal/deadly heal/auto-use item) makes your character very hard to kill).

Any difficulty level above normal is only for bragging rights as far as I know.

There are some side quests as well that are accessible when they shouldn't be (enemies massively overleveled for your character; or escort missions where the escortee doesn't level in line with you and so if you tried them later in the game, they would be much harder)

However, if you hate the aesthetic then I wouldn't push on.
I'm approaching 40 hours in this now (the opening credits rolled at around 35 hours ...) and I'm invested with the game but it is a very particular design and I could see people bouncing off it

Mind, there's not even been a mild rumour about a new one - has there ??

Funnily enough there was today but it was quickly shot down as a mistake

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on PS4 says I’m at 37% completion, which I guess is 7-8 hours so far, and I’m still not sure how much I like it. Certainly more than I did for the first couple of hours, when, if I hadn’t been given it for my birthday last week, I’m not sure I’d have carried on. Now I’ve got some Jedi powers in the bag and have been in an AT-AT, it’s feeling pretty good, but it sometimes runs like a dog on original PS4, and gameplay is still a bit rough around the edges, and it feels more like an average Tomb Raider (with a hint of Metroid) than something with Star Wars in the title. Which is kind of the impression I had before I played it, and why I waited for it to be a lower-priced birthday idea rather than the day one purchase the Star Wars nerd in me might have suggested it would have been!

Also played through Daley Thompson’s Decathlon on the Spectrum again for a new post on my Retro Arcadia blog. That’s one game that is exactly how you remember it, for better or worse, and my fingers certainly aren’t what they used to be! If anyone’s interested, you can read more here: https://retroarcadia.blog/2020/05/21/m ... -spectrum/

I started playing Wuppo again. I love this game. It's like a nice, warm blanket. Well-written, great art direction, a seriously overlooked hidden gem.

Oh and FF13-2 has a really convoluted puzzle dungeon at the end so I'm not speaking to it for a few days.

I remember adding this to my wish list after seeing it mentioned as a hidden gem on a YT video ages ago. It's still like £14 on Switch but I'll definitely be picking it up in a sale (I know it's cheap on PSN at the moment but honestly it wouldn't likely get played on my PS4).

There's been some further rumours today suggesting it could also be a PS4 game and hasn't yet been discredited, so maybe something is in the works.

We must have felt it in our waters !!! 😄😄

Mind, there’s likely some credence in the PS4 compatibility.

I think we’ll see a lot of this next generation, I mean it makes sense.
