Really struggling to find motivation for long sessions lately so I’ve been dipping my toe in WarioWare Gold, Far Cry 2 and Resident evil 5.

One day I’ll find that game to keep me hooked but ever since Sea of thieves and hitting pirate legend, I’ve yet to find a game to offer a similar feeling of never wanting to turn it off

Inspired by TCGS discussion over recent months, I dug out my Wii and stuck Mario Kart on for Ellis, who's three. We used motion controls and the steering wheel, and whilst he had absolutely no clue how to follow the track he just loved spinning around crashing in to stuff. I think it's the start of his gaming career! First time I've ever introduced him to games, he's never even seen me play one before.

Unfortunatly, being three, his attention span is that of a toddler with ADHD (which, as an early years and children's development professional of over 20 years I'm fairly sure he is...)it wasn't long lasted. Still, he loved it whilst it was on!

I've been playing a bit of TIMoDD this afternoon. Only on Chapter 2, so I don't have too much to say about the overarching story at the moment, but the "ask a question"-feature is turning out to be rather frustrating so far. A lot of questions that I think would make for some interesting conversational material turn out to not be recognized by the system or are redirecting to canned non-sequiturs. Just a few examples:
Spoiler: show
Person A: I like going to this nightclub because of the cheap vodka shots.
Person A: I don't drink.
Me: (Hm...This seems like a contradiction.) "Why do you like the vodka shots if you don't drink?"
Person A: I like going to this nightclub because of the cheap vodka shots.

30 seconds later:

Person A: There is a great dance floor and blacklighting in that night club. (Paraphrased)
Me: (Could her blackouts be caused by the blacklighting? A form of epileptic narcolepsy perhaps?) "Blacklighting?" "Did you black out because of the blacklighting?"
Person A, looking utterly confused: Uuuuuum. Nope? (Canned response)

Person B: People disapprove of me because of my age.
Me: (Okay, this could be useful info later on) "How old are you?"
Person B: Who told you to ask that? I don't know!

Person B: *mentions Dorian Gray*
Me: (Okay, let's dig a little deeper) "You like Oscar Wilde?"
Person B: I really don't know, sorry.
It reminds me a bit of Scribblenauts in the sense that this type of feature sounds awesome on paper, but the program just can't keep up with basic unpredictable human imagination. I think I'm gonna stick to the pre-programmed questions from now on instead.

Yeah, I figured that asking my own questions would ruin the flow of the game so I didn’t engage with that at all.

I'm still messing with Mario Ware Gold on the 3DS and having a great time with that console again to be honest. It's got me looking at that library again seeing what to maybe get into again.

Octopath Traveller is currently my main and I'm enjoying it a lot. It's a mammoth game, but I'm making good progress each time which I'm hoping continues.

Then finally, I'm dipping in out of Warioland on the GameBoy, on my GameCube via the GameBoy player. I never finished this back in the day, I'm currently on world 4 and have just realised that the previous worlds change once you pass them. For instance, the first area is Rice Beach, once you go back to it the tide has come in and not only changes up the levels but gives you access to areas that were once inaccessible - so yeah, very interesting and fun to play.

The Wario Land series is always one I try to get into but never feel the need to come back once I’ve turned it off.

After finishing it I couldn't keep myself away from A Hat in Time. That game is such fun. I went back and 100%ed it. Granted, it's a small game so that's not exactly a huge achievement, but given that I pretty much never do that with any game, that says something. And even beyond that I've been continuing to play it with loads of mod levels. Some of them are pretty impressive and really well put together. Others not so much, obviously. But strangely a lot of the ones I didn't like were ones that seemed like they had a lot of effort and craft put in to them. Just a few little oversights that ended up being really annoying in practice. A shame, since I'd like to play them more.

But in terms of the base game, one thing I have come to really appreciate about it is the level of challenge. It's just right. It's relatively easy, but challenges you just enough to push you out of your comfort zone a little. Or at least it did for me, coming from a perspective of someone who is versed in games in general, but isn't really in to platformers. Everything felt within reach, but at the same time there were a decent number of things that made me use the full range of abilities the game gives you to their fullest degree. Some of the bosses in particular were quite tricky too.

And since it's had a free weekend on Steam, I decided to give Absolver a go. I've always been intrigued by this game ever since they announced it, but never played it until now. Was rather daunted by its in-depth mechanics and multiplayer focus. Thought it would be just another fighting game that is impossibly brutal to get in to. Turns out I wasn't totally right, but I wasn't completely wrong either. The combat mechanics are surprisingly easy to pick up the basics on and get in to a few scraps. Fighting feels really nice too, and the sound design in particular is fantastic. The thud of hits landing is brilliant. I like the visual style of it too. Very minimalist, and set in this weird world that feels very peaceful but dangerous at the same time. The game also has this really interesting system about learning new moves. You learn them by fighting other people who use them, and once you get them, you can slot them in to your move set and build it in to your own custom combo strings. Although I never got to the point where I could make use of that.

But a lot of it is really just baffling and obtuse, and I didn't get on with it at all. Although I understand the stance direction stuff the game does in theory, I don't feel like I ever got to grips with it any better the longer I played. You also have three classes to choose from at the start of the game, who each have their own unique ability. I chose what seemed like the easiest to understand "default" class, which had a parry. I don't think I ever pulled off a successful parry at all, despite asking around for advice to try to understand what I was seemingly missing. It seemed very unresponsive and just totally useless, despite reading people talking online about how supposedly lenient and easy to use it was. Navigation around the game world is infuriating too. You have a very small open world to explore, that is mostly a web of linear twisting paths, so it shouldn't be that hard to get your bearings, right? Yet I found myself getting totally lost all the time and running around in circles forever. The game has no map whatsoever either. It's extremely annoying when you're just trying to find any path ahead, or even the path back, and you're just spinning around like an idiot. It gets old very fast. Getting ganged up on by other players is really no fun either. You don't stand a chance, especially as a new player.

So yeah, aggravating in the end. But I can see a little glimmer of something there in this game. I can see it being something really special. Maybe if I put in a lot more time, and they added some kind of map to the game, it might click for me. But as is, I can't see myself getting in to it.

I reacquainted myself with my old Wii over the weekend with Elliot, my eldest.

First of all we had a blast on House Of The Dead 2 & 3, which was a lot of fun but also highlighted how much better it is playing with the accuracy of the PS Move controller rather than the Wii-Motes!

Then we played some Mario Kart Wii. What a fantastic game, even the worst (not my opinion but that seems to be the general consensus?) Mario Kart game is still better than every other Kart racer out there. We played team grand prix, and he mostly kicked my ass! Those games are just so much fun.

Then we put on Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, and somehow he was still kicking my ass, WTactualF!?

We played a few levels of Super Mario Galaxy, which he'd never even seen before. He's got Odyssey on his Switch, but we had a lot of fun just jumping around small planets playing with the gravity.

Warioware also proved very successful, and was a game he'd never seen before too. We played a few levels of that before moving on. Rather disappointing that multiplayer is only unlocked once you've beaten the game in single player though!

Finally, later yesterday evening I played the opening two hours of The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I think I picked this up at a car boot years back, without realising I needed the Motion Plus adapter to play it, which I didn't have. Fortunately, Elliot has lent me his Wii-Mote, which is one of the later models with Motion Plus built in. Now, despite the glowing reviews, I've always thought Skyward Sword wasn't a game in the series that fans particularly liked. I don't know why, but you never really hear it spoken about. As someone who really hates motion controls I've always been a little dubious about it too, but so far it's been brilliant! I've only played the opening couple of hours - I've done the bird race and just woken up after Zelda has been whisked away in the tornado. Really looking forward to getting back on it later. Its bright, colourful, and very Nintendo. The music is almost cartoonish the way it changed when certain characters come on the screen. What an absolutely surprising delight of a way to round off my Wii-kend!

I'm starting Bioshock Infinite. Actually, it's a long time coming because it was one of the first sparks in my mind to get me upgrading to a full gaming PC. My laptop was able to play Bioshock 1 but couldn't run Infinite. I'm excited for this one!

Sounds like a delightful weekend.

I'm always pleasantly surprised how much I enjoy using the Wii when I boot it up, the Wii Motes' are wonderful to use.

Regards HotD, I feel you on that one. If only the Wii let you calibrate the sensor bar in a finer detail than the basic one it has, I always feel like I have to aim the gun slightly higher than what I need to, no matter how much I try and calibrate it.

Also big love for this console as it lets you choose the output in the settings for either LCD's or CRT's with the latter being the better. I'm often tempted to use the Wii as my GameCube player but the GC puts out slightly better colours than the Wii and has the GameBoy player so that wins.

Letting old consoles ferment and then going back to them, especially Nintendo ones, is a wholesome experience.

I've recently picked up my 3DS again and using that, with its form, functionality and library is very enlightening and makes me happy that Nintendo are still supporting the 80 Million units that are out there.

I'm massively late to the party, but I've finally started playing Life is Strange.

I've heard nothing but great things about it since it was released, but I'm just not feeling it.

I'm half way through episode 3 and I'm just finding it really dull and a real struggle to play. The story is yet be interesting and the characters all seem rather annoying.

Am I yet to get the point where the game becomes interesting? I'm just not getting the praise it got based on what I've played.

It's one of those mellow games where you kind of have to go with the flow. For me it clicked with the religious girl's crisis in chapter 2 (I think?). If it hasn't clicked by the third episode, I doubt it will.

Yeah I think the end of episode 2 was when it properly gets it hooks in. Totally a game you need to be in the mood for. I have not played Captain Spirit yet.

Dead Cells on Switch.

It's essentially Wizard of Legend spells, buffs and damage modifiers crossed with Flinthook platforming feel and generous permanent upgrades with a side order of Castlevania combat, and the art style of Hyper Light Drifter. I haven't spotted a single original idea here but it's probably the best of the roguelite rest, with Isaac way way out in front in almost every respect. I might as well uninstall Wizard of Legend, Flinthook and Enter the Gungeon though, now.

I was out on a run earlier and a dragonfly crossed my path. My brain told me to press A... maybe need to lay off Breafh of the Wild a bit!

Did want to mention Pirate Pop Plus, which I was drawn to ages ago because it looks like an original Game Boy game, and I picked up for about £2.30 in the Nintendo Summer Sale. You’re popping and dodging bubbles being bounced around a single screen arena by a pirate, who also appears occasionally to drop an anchor that can move gravity (then you) to any of the four sides of the scene. It’s a score chaser with some cool power ups and coins to collect, which you can spend on customising pretty much everything, including your “Game Boy” faceplate. Very simple and very addictive.

I also remembered there was a NES Mini Classic sitting under my TV that arrived just before I went on holiday and I hadn’t tried out yet! Fantastic machine (if you spend a fiver on a controller extension cable) with a great selection of games, most of which I’ve never played before. No hesitation in trying out the new-to-me NES version of an all time favourite, Bubble Bobble, first. Wonderful version that will be even better when I get a second controller. Also spent an hour jumping between Ice Climber and Gradius as they were both completely new on me. Both of their time, but nothing wrong with that! Can’t wait to dive into the early Zelda games on there soon.

I have abandoned Call of Cthulhu on PC due to the necessity of technical- and guide-based interventions weighing down the scale a bit too much on one side. It was good while it lasted. Worth checking out on Xbox for sure, if that is convenient.

I started Star Traders: Frontiers (PC) last night; it's an early access space trader/turn-based fighter/ARPG where most of your time is spent levelling up your crew and ship, by the looks of it. Too early to make anything of it yet. It has turn-based space battles and turn-based ground battles (a la Darkest Dungeon) so we'll see where it goes.

And my third season as the Albuquerque Breaking Bads baseball team ended in failure; again my pitchers fell apart in the playoffs. Steps need to be taken.

A good friend came over from Japan and stayed two nights and we've been playing 2P Darius Gaiden (which he brought as a gift) and Layer Section for Saturn, ARMS, Smash 4 and Game & Wario multiplayer (together with the kids) and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. Good times, good times.

Nice 8-)

Does the Saturn version of Darius Gaiden have that awesome soundtrack? You know, the one where you "don't stop now"?
