I've played a few rounds of Fortnite 2.0 on my Switch, and really enjoyed it! The matchmaking is definitely better now, as I've come as high as 9th and even 2nd on my last match. Before I'd just get killed as soon as someone spotted me, but it seems I at least have a fighting chance now. Using motion controls to fine tune aiming is brilliant as well, and makes it much easier to get that sniper head shot for sure. Yeah I think I'll be playing this a bit now, it's a lot of fun.

That's bad, isn't it. £2.50 in CEX on Xbox One and PS4, £15 on Switch.

I've got it, it's really good - the reason it reviews poorly is it doesn't compare with FIFA 18 elsewhere - the engine is based off FIFA 16 I believe, pre-Frostbite. Something I don't care about personally. It runs extremely well and has everything you'd want, the only omission really is online play against a friend - but it's FIFA 18 so who else is going to be playing it. You can still play against randoms though, if they haven't turned off the servers.

FIFA 19 is basically the same game with some extra online modes and friend invites, and FIFA 20 is an absolute piss-take "Legacy edition" - literally the same game with updated squads & stats.

I've kept FIFA 18, it also has the glory year (yes this is our version of glory now) of Rafa's 10th place finish in the Premier League for us, so I like that more than where Newcastle have been since FIFA 18 :D worth getting I'd say.

Also, I speak as someone who has FIFA 19 on PS4. I'm more likely to play 18 on Switch now for my football fix when it comes back.

I've bounced off Creature in the Well (PC), the 'pinball-adjacent' dungeon crawler that came out a short while back.

The premise is ok - you are bouncing around balls of energy to charge targets and open doors. You do this via two swords - one to bat the ball around on the fly, and one to trap the ball and charge it before releasing it in the direction you want. So two buttons plus an evasive dash. Meanwhile all kinds of traps have been activated, enemies are shooting at you, the floor electrifies, flying enemies swarm towards you etc. So trying to bat the ball during all this is a bit frustrating. The simple sword swipe when moving has very little chance to hit precisely, and even the precision aim (which I found not precise enough with the thumbstick) damages you if you hold the ball too long when lining up your shot. There are timers on a lot of the switches so they don't stay active for long and you have to start again.

So it's a bit of a bastard. I completed the first level but life's too short.

Got this on MS Game Pass. It's a game I would have bought in a sale eventually, so I guess the good (me dodging a bullet) outweighs the bad (no sale for the developer).

Will be interesting to see how this Game Pass thing works out - will I value the games less because I haven't bought them, and just use it as a glorified demo machine, or will it be more? At the moment I'm resisting having more than one game installed at once for that reason.

I guess I can uninstall this one now and install Forza :D

I've pretty much been using Game Pass to try out the games that I am interested in but wouldn't necessarily have gone out to bought and that's everything from What Remains Of Edith Finch and The Gardens Below to Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4

it does mean a few more games sitting staring at me -Creature in the Well(though Chopper's description is making me pause now on that), Mutant: Year Zero but also means that I can try out The Outer Worlds and stops me burning out on Tom Clancy's The Destiny 2: Breakpoint ... 8-)

I'm liking the fact that for not much more money I have a large library of games I can dip into, even if they aren't great when I try. Whether I still feel the same, this time next year when the summer offer goes away and I have to pay full price ...

Too much water today so no fishing (ridiculous pastime) so I played about eight hours of Divinity: Original Sin 2. This game is perilously addictive. It's got the looty sprawling quests and dungeons of Diablo with the writing and characters of The Witcher with Fire Emblem-esque combat. It's bloody brilliant and I don't especially like these kinds of games normally. Makes a nice change of pace. This game is a beast.

In between bouts of Yakuza 0, been trying some demos on the PS4.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom: Very pretty metroidvania with charming characters and some fun exploration and movement. The frog transformation made the demo alone! Would definitely like to try the full game at some point in the future.

Songbird Symphony: This was just the most loveliest thing I have seen in a long time. Not a lot of games based around birds and singing which is surprising considering they are a pretty musical group of animals. Also expected this to be a straight up rhythm game but the light platforming adventure elements were a pleasant surprise. Rhythm sections are very basic but it is a demo so it might get more complex later. But overall, had a big grin on my face while playing this.

Add these to the ever expanding backlog, I suppose. :)

Looking forward to it! But I'm a bit worried I'm gonna be a dilettante about it - mess around for 30 mins and leave, like Gran Turismo Sport (I changed this from GT5, to GT6, to Sport :o ).

Regardless, that's a decision for another day, because I inadvertently installed the State of Decay 2 DLC. :(

It's worth giving it a go anyway! If you can nail the precision shot mechanic, you're golden I reckon. I'm already feeling a smidge guilty about abandoning it so quickly.

12 hours in to my Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past playthrough and it continues to be a fantastic game. I've just beaten the dungeon for the fourth crystal princess. At first I thought the game was really short, getting those three pendants and getting the master sword - I thought that was the whole game! But no, that was basically the introduction! Haha. I can see why this blew people's minds back in the day. It still does to be honest, it's pretty much perfect.

Yes!
... I'm all about the plodding along doing mundane tasks games at the moment..
Even better!

It's one you could bounce off very easily. I would say to try to fulfill the objectives on the first map before casting it aside; you'll know by that stage if it clicks.
Gave it a try last night. Initial thoughts...

I wasn't quite prepared for how ropey it looks! It really is not a pretty game. (the less than 1gb download size was an indication this may be the case!) The truck models aren't too bad, but the terrain and the way it morphs under your wheels is pretty poor, and the interior of the trucks if you're in cockpit view looks like it was drawn in MS Paint!

I knew it was a slow, methodical game, but I didn't realise quite how slow it was! Even in a ten tonne truck on a highway its like driving through treacle!

I don't fully understand what the differential thing does. It seems to make it easier to navigate tricky terrain, when I'm stuck in mud, turning it on helps. Why wouldn't I want to just leave it, along with all wheel drive, all the time? There doesn't appear to be a drawback to having them both on all the time.

Despite the above, I'm enjoying it. I've done about half the challenges and not tackled the 'main'(?) campaign yet. Not even tried it, I went to open it and it advised me to do the challenges first. I love driving games, I love off roading games, and I love doing mundane tasks games. This ticks a lot of boxes. Seems quite generous with three free DLCs on the PlayStation store to install as well.

I bet modders on PC have made it look incredible.

The Outer Worlds already feels like ‘New Vegas, in SPAAAAAACE’ to me.

It’s very obviously an Obsidian game. Very much enjoying it so far (has a bit of a borderlands vibe as well, but the humour isn’t quite so in your face as that series)

I didn't realise it was less than a gig! Yeah, I know the PC version has a million mods, you've got me curious about that now. Although, a large part of the PS4 playthrough hinged on trophies as a 'goal' for me, strangely enough. I bought the American Wilds DLC but because there were no trophies, I didn't really play it (plus the trucks were a bit crap).

I don't fully understand what the differential thing does. It seems to make it easier to navigate tricky terrain, when I'm stuck in mud, turning it on helps.

The differential applies drive to all wheels equally - so if you were in a situation where you were stuck, rather than all the power being directed to the wheels that aren't stuck, it puts an equal amount to the stuck wheels. Or on a climb etc. On a paved surface, the wheels are powered independently, so when you turn at speed, the wheels on the outer side of the truck have to turn more than the ones on the inner side. If you have the diff on, you might see a small loss of control.

On the higher difficulty, engaging it on paved surfaces damages your engine and it uses more fuel (there is 'tactical refuelling' in this game  ).

If you see a vehicle without 4WD or Differential steering or whatever it's called, it's not really suitable for off road.

Using 4WD on a paved surface also uses more fuel.

Finally picked up Lucah: Born of a Dream and so far it's proven to be a pretty compelling experience. It's got a really unique feel to it that I like a lot. It has a sort of uncomfortable and even alienating feel to it, in a way that is clearly intentional though. Like it's trying to create this hostile and abstract world, trying to get you to see things from the perspective of the character you play as. Even though it appears to be set in some approximation of a normal modern town, everything is rendered in dark, low res graphics that have scratchy, messy style to it that makes things hard to make out. I mean, you can usually tell what everything is supposed to be, but it all feels uncanny and even dangerous. And it's all mixed together with more supernatural elements that are clearly meant to be metaphorical symbols, but it's unclear exactly how much of it is supposed to be "real" in the world itself.

All of this seems to be in service of the story, which is definitely very intriguing and covers some really heavy topics, but does it in a pretty abstract way that can be somewhat obtuse and inscrutable at times. But again, that feels like it's meant to be the case as it's part of the themes it's trying to get across. It seems like what it's getting at is the experience of being trans growing up in a repressive religious community, as well as other mental issues that might coincide with that, or be adjacent to it. Like depression, and even suicide. While I can't speak to the trans experience myself, I try to listen to that perspective a lot, and have some of my own experience with other aspects of mental health, so it still resonances on some level. As such it makes sense for the aesthetic style meant to evoke feelings of hostility and darkness. Where there's this sense of creeping dread, and cryptic allusions to guilt eating away at you, or not feeling like your body is your own. Detached from yourself and everything around you.

Honestly it's very hard to put in to words. But that's part of why it's so interesting. And I haven't got far enough to see where this is all heading yet, but I'm definitely keen to find out.

I wanted to feel like I was playing The Outer Worlds last night so played the first couple of hours of Borderlands 2 on PS4. I've played the first few hours of this game about 4 times now, but I enjoyed it more than usual last night. I don't know if I'll stick with it this time, because I'm having trouble sticking with anything at the moment, I but enjoyed it enough to want to try. I haven't played a shooter for ages, and am feeling the pull a little. It's not my favourite genre by any means, but there's enough different about Borderlands to mean it doesn't turn turn in to another corridor FPS.

I thought that Borderlands 2 took a little while to really get going, but once it does it really sings. Some of that may depend on whether you find Tiny Tina as hilarious as I do.

The opening to hours did raise a smile once or twice, I'll admit. I'm not sure I've ever really found a game 'funny' funny (other than the one I'm about to mention), they just never do that for me, but there were a few moments that did coax a slight chuckle out of me. I think the funniest game I've played is South Park: The Stick Of Truth, but, as with anything else subjective, your comedy milage may vary!
