Catching up is great, the minute I finally got my hands on a PS console I just got to enjoy about a decade's worth of classics I had missed out on. But the good people at Sony have got me now - my PS4 was free, but I've already started quietly putting money aside for a PS5 in case sequels to franchises I've grown to love/games by my favourite developers* turn out to be PS5 exclusives. (I finally stopped dragging my feet and bought a Switch a year or so ago purely because the latest "Fire Emblem" was a Switch exclusive).

* (I went from "what the hell is Naughty Dog?" to "I will buy everything they make no questions asked" in about six short months)
I'm still catching up on killer exclusives... Played God of War, TLOU 1&2, Uncharted 4 & Lost Legacy all within the last 12 months, I love it. And yeah, last time I played Naughty Dog stuff was when Crash Team Racing was newly out.

Exactly the same with me! I understand all the criticism Naughty Dog gets, and I know they're far from perfect, but playing their recent games felt like someone performed some sort of "Inception" type mind-work on me and worked out exactly what I love (from the sound effects to the game engine to the story tropes) and made games filled exclusively with things I liked. I almost didn't buy TLOU2 because I heard all the negativity surrounding it and it was quite expensive, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it - I've since played it through three times and I adore it. Really excited to see what games ND make next.

(And apologies for hijacking this thread while I'm procrastinating. I'll get me coat.)

Seeing how your tastes shift over time is pretty interesting. A decade ago my list would’ve had a lot more jrpg’s on it than it does now, because as a genre I’ve gotten pretty tired of its lack of innovation to the extent it’s actually made me dislike games I used to love...

I had a go at doing a ranking based on the games I've finished (or played a substantial amount of) since the Cane and Rinse forum began. The top 20 is pretty close to how I'd rank them if I'd done it manually (used an automatic website where you compare games and pick which wins each battle) and a couple of omissions, but it's not too far off!

1 Red Dead Redemption 2
2 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
3 Dark Souls
4 Yoku's Island Express
5 Mass Effect 2
6 Bayonetta
7 Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
8 Uncharted: Lost Legacy
9 The Witness
10 Mass Effect 3
11 Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
12 The Last Of Us Part II
13 Days Gone
14 Metal Gear Solid V
15 Bloodborne
16 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
17 The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
18 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
19 Grand Theft Auto V
20 Super Mario Odyssey
21 Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
22 Dark Souls 3
23 Hyper Light Drifter

Man, I saw this post and I'm kind of killing time, so I'll give it a shot. These games are in no particular order and I know I'll likely miss some.

1. Dragon Quest XI
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Super Metroid
4. Super Mario Bros 3
5. Final Fantasy VI
6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
7. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
8. Civ series (I can't pick one, they all have their charms, though if forced I'd maybe go with V?)
9. Mega Man 2
10. Earthbound
11. Nier Automata
12. The Last of Us
13. Terranigma
14. Secret of Mana
15. Knights of the Old Republic
16. Knights of the Old Republic 2
17. Final Fantasy VII
18. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
19. LoZ: Ocarina of Time
20. LoZ: Breath of the Wild
21. Mario Galaxy
22. Mario Galaxy 2
23. Mario Odyssey
24. Disco Elysium
25. Persona 5 (haven't played Royal yet)
26. Ys VIII
27. Super Smash Bros Melee
28. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
29. Monkey Island
30. Sam & Max Hit the Road
31. Command & Conquer Red Alert
32. Red Dead Redemption
33. Diablo 2
34. Diablo 3
35. Castlevania 3
36. Super Bomberman
37. River Raid-wanted to show some love for Atari and this is my favorite game I used to play on the system
38. Double Dragon 2 (both NES and arcade versions)
39. River City Ransom
40. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
41. Tetris (almost any version, but particularly the Tengen, GameBoy, and DS versions)
42. Witcher 3
43. Psychonauts
44. Halo 2
45. Halo Reach
46. Bioshock
47. Divinity Original Sin 2
48. Contra
49. Pac-Man Championship Edition
50. Metroid Prime

In retrospect, may have been easier if I'd just done a top 5 of each system I have owned because I feel I didn't give enough love to Dreamcast

Not sure how I'd go about making a top 50 list because it would probably just end up looking like a 'top 50 albums' list - ie all of the stuff that burned itself into my brain when i was at the most impressionable age and not necessarily the actual 'best' stuff. Lots of games made a huge impression on me at the time, but I wouldn't necessarily want to play them again now.

Number 1 favourite game of all time is easy though - Super Mario World, hands down.

Liking the new lists here

I've updated my list from 2018. A lot have shuffled around just depending how I feel when making the list.

Gravity Rush, Psychonauts, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, Elite Beat Agents, Ico and GTA: Vice City were pushed off the list by the new entrants Hades, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Wandersong, Marvel's Spider-Man, Valkyria Chronicles 4 and A Short Hike.

I also seriously considered Slay the Spire, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Outer Wilds and God of War (2018) for the list

1. Persona 4
2. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
5. Ristar
6. Grand Theft Auto 3
7. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
8. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
9. Streets of Rage 2
10. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
11. Persona 3
12. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
13. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
14. Pro Evolution Soccer 5
15. Hades
16. Football Manager 2008
17. Rayman Legends
18. Horizon: Zero Dawn
19. Suikoden II
20. Everybody's Golf (Vita)
21. Valkyria Chronicles
22. Shadow of the Colossus
23. Sonic the Hedgehog
24. Chrono Trigger
25. Rocket League
26. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
27. Wandersong
28. Final Fantasy IX
29. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations

38. Yakuza 0
39. Bust A Move 2: Arcade Edition
40. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
41. Timesplitters 2
42. Splatoon 2
43. A Short Hike
44. Advance Wars

Here's my list: https://www.backloggd.com/u/markfm007/l ... uary-2022/

Love reading other people's lists, and really enjoyed doing this. It's interesting ranking games against each other that you've loved at different times in your life, often for completely different reasons. Plus it's nice to look back on them all, good memories.

Hey! Someone else with Oracle of Ages in their list!

While its status as my first Zelda helps it make mine, I also think its one of the finest 2D Zeldas and my favourite implementation of the dual world/time mechanic in the series.

Awesome! It was my first one too, well the first I owned and finished. It's very nostalgic for me, I loved the different time zones and seeing what was different in each. It has some great dungeons and puzzles, although I remember buying a walkthrough towards the end as some of them got pretty complicated. Definitely under-appreciated, although that could be nostalgia talking.

Haha, the Water Temple has nothing on Oracle of Ages' Jabu-Jabu Belly.

Caligulas Horse wrote: September 10th, 2019, 4:29 pm Here's my list (Not meant to be in order). I tried to only pick one game per series but I couldn't decide between FF9 or 7 so they both went in.

I had PES 05 in there but really there are several PES games from 2003-7 that all just blur into one, it felt a bit weird putting any of them on the list alone.
Spoiler: show
1. Halo 3
2. FF9
3. FF7
4. GTA: San Andreas
5. Metal Gear Solid
6. Streets of Rage 2
7. Onimusha 2
8. The Day of The Tentacle
9. Dynasty Warriors 3
10. Sam & Max Hit The Road
11. Hitman: Blood Money
12. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven
13. Golden Axe
14. Suikoden 2
15. Age of Empires 2
16. Counter Strike
17. Silent Hill 2
18. Time Splitters: Future Perfect
19. Time Crisis 2
20. Red Faction
21. Red Dead Redemption
22. Shadow of Colossus
23. The Warriors
24. Deadly Premonition
25. Resident Evil 4
26. Left 4 Dead
27. Fallout: New Vegas
28. Pokemon Gold
29. Earthbound/Mother 2
30. Tekken Tag Tournament
31. Ape Escape
32. Rascal
33. Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS2)
34. Deadspace 2
35. N+
36. Spyro: Year of the Dragon
37. Sonic 2
38. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
39. Super Smash Bros: Melee
40. Mirrors Edge
41. Dead Rising
42. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
43. 007: Agent Under Fire
44. Crash Bandicoot: Warped
45. Parasite Eve
46. Bloodborne
47. Monster Rancher 2
48. Marvel vs Capcom 2
49. Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors
50. SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth
It's quite a sentimental list for me, the clearest example of that being the inclusion of Rascal lol.

I've seen people call Rascal the worst game ever, it definitely isn't but it is an extremely flawed game. It's a platformer with rubbish tank controls and an uncontrollable camera, anyone who plays it now would think it's terrible but it was one of the first games I owned or played and I loved it, it's a weird time travel story which means you play every level in the past, present and future- I still think that's really cool :ugeek:. I used to play it with my mum as well and we still talk about it every now and then, it's quite an important game for me but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because it kind of sucks. Soundtrack has some bangers though.
This popped in my head today so I thought I'd look back and see how much I agree with in my list. Also be interesting to see how others feel, or if any newer users have a list to add.

Looking back, I'd say mine was more than "quite" sentimental lol, and a few of these choices are pure childhood nostalgia that I'd drop now (Rascal 100% stays, though) for games I've played since that really wowed me, like Sekiro, The Witcher 3, Disco Elysium and Elden Ring.

Spelunky 2 would also take one of those places I think.

Might also swap Mother 2 for 3, but there isn't much in it.

Thought I'd try an updated list. Using a handy rankings site (thanks for the link, James!) that makes you select which game you prefer out of the two show, it eventually compiles a list.

I'll preface this by saying my list is limited by my memory of games I've enjoyed over the last few years, and there might be a bit of a recency bias.

I think it's a pretty solid list though, in so far as I don't really think anything is too far in the wrong place!

1 Red Dead Redemption 2
2 The Witcher 3
3 Dark Souls
4 Days Gone
5 Bloodborne
6 Uncharted 4
7 Grand Theft Auto V
8 Mass Effect 3
9 The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
10 Divinity Original Sin 2
11 The Witness
12 Uncharted: Lost Legacy
13 Metal Gear Solid 3
14 The Last Of Us
15 Hollow Knight

20 Dark Souls 2
21 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
22 Hyper Light Drifter
23 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
24 Ori & The Blind Forest
25 Disco Elysium
26 Pentiment

Sorry if you've already said why but given that BoTW is your number 9, why didn't you get ToTK? Or is it just a case of you working through other games first?

I have got it (or at least I bought it my son for his birthday yesterday) but only finished BOTW a few weeks ago and don't want to go straight in to the next one yet.

Ah right, fair enough. Will be interested to hear how you get on with it. I must admit that despite BoTW also being in my top 10 games, ToTK hasn't grabbed me like I thought it would. Still enjoying it but the sheer size of it all I have found intimidating, not just in terms of the map but in terms of the options it provides you with in terms of all the building stuff and abilities. I'm 25 hours in and feel like I've done very little. To many that will be really appealing but to my own personal tastes, I just feel intimidated and like I'm never making any progress. That's not to say I think it's bad, in fact I still enjoy playing it, but I know there is a problem for me somewhere if I have gravitated to playing other games when I get home in the evening.

I watched my son play a bit of it on his birthday but he got annoyed quite quickly and got stuck and hasn't been back yet. Sure he will, the same happened with BOTW and he ended up completing that. I think they're both fairly unforgiving near the start when you only have three hearts. As for me, I'll more than likely leave it till next year now.
