Not far off what Disney paid for Star Wars plus Marvel. Serious amount of cash to be throwing around. Still Microsoft are definitely one company with it at their disposal.

When was the last time a games company purchased a large publisher like this?

This is huge! And all games coming to Gamepass is brilliant, too. Man I can't wait to get one. I might have to give up work to fit all these games in!

Will be fascinating to see how this plays out over the coming years!

I'm going to wager that most major Bethesda franchise game (e.g. Elder Scrolls, Doom, Fallout, Wolfenstein), still come to Playstation platforms, with at worst a timed exclusive window on Xbox. Purely the fact that they will all land on Game Pass day one vs being £70 on PS5 is enough of selling point for Xbox without having to actually keep them off Playstation entirely, and it's massive revenue stream they won't want to give up if they don't have to.

There will also probably be things like exclusive or timed exclusive content for Xbox platforms, much like Sony have done this last gen (e.g. Destiny, COD, Avengers).

Pretty good timing with pre-orders starting tomorrow...

I don't know, do games made by other Microsoft owned developers come to PlayStation? (Genuinely asking).

I think anything already announced will, obviously. Not so sure about future games.

Now The Elder Scrolls VI might actually come out.

Although what I really want is Dishonored 3...

I guess, but that game existed well before MS bought it.

If they wanted to do they could have stopped selling it on other consoles though.

You might be right, I just think it leaves too much money on the table if they made them Xbox and Pc exclusive, I think it would still be a huge advantage to just make it so they hit game pass day one, whilst still being on other platforms, especially if they’re £70 a pop

Well, M$ has sworn off exclusivity, and already they've stated bethesda gems may or may not be exclusive.

I wouldn't worry too much, with gamepass and their pc support, they're more concerned with you subscribing to gamepass than actually having an xbox.

This is all super interesting, and in theory, they don't HAVE to make anything exclusive with their mindset:

"Wow, Halo 7 is out but I'm broke, oh right it's on gamepass."

"Oh, I wish I had an xbox to play Fallout New Vegas 2, oh right, Switch has gamepass"

As for the last huge purchase? Probably M$ in trying to create it's captain planet of game developers the past couple years. But really, it's more comparable to Disney/Star Wars/Marvel as someone already stated.

Bethesda have two ps5 exclusives in development, and ms have said that those will remain so.

I wonder if we’ll see the ms games studios logo on a ps5 only game? Heh.

This does show that the ms strategy is more about ‘get games onto gamepass’ rather than ‘prevent games being on the competitions hardware’ this time out.

What I do think we'll see is new xbox & PC exclusive games/franchises outside of the existing tentpole properties (e.g. Elder Scrolls, Doom etc), created by what were Bethesda-owned studios.

So you might not get an Xbox-exclusive Dishonored or Wolfenstein, but you will probably get an exclusive new title from Arkane or Id. That's basically what is happening already with on PS5 with Death Loop and Ghost Wire, it's just those are timed exclusives and will come to Xbox eventually, but in the new world that would be flipped with titles like that never coming to Playstation.

All speculation of course, but they've just spent $7.5bn on these studios, and I can't imagine you do that just to get games on Game Pass and not reap some of the other potentially sizeable rewards.

I can't see Switch ever having Gamepass.

Good point.

That pre order was a mess again, just like with PS5. Series S appears to still be available, surprisingly.

You say that, but scuttlebutt has them working closely. We're in a weird Era where everyone's playing nice except Sony and apple.

The only way it could even possibly work would be through streaming, but a little bit like with Apple, I can't see Nintendo wanting their players to have access to a library of hundreds of games not purchased from their store.

People have a finite amount of gaming time and money, and the more time they spend playing Xbox games on their Switch and spending money on an Xbox service for their Switch, the less time and money they spend with Nintendo. Sure Nintendo would get a small cut of the subscription, but I can't imagine it would be enough to make it worth their while. Would be awesome if it happened of course!

At least for Xbox we knew a time and place and it wasn't dropped on us unawares, so for me it lacked the mad dash aspect of PS5 pre-ordering.

I think for people trying to do the Xbox All Access pay monthly thing it was a different story though, as that was only available through GAME and Smyth's I believe and it must have been popular, as their sites are still down!

For websites that struggled to stand up to the traffic spike though, that's on the sites for not upgrading their hosting capacity in anticipation rather bad planning on Microsoft's part. I work for a business that builds and hosts large scale websites, and with cloud-based hosting like Azure and AWS these days you can dial your specs up and down really quickly to cope with these things, particularly when you know it's coming. It costs companies a bit more money to do it, but not astronomical amounts.

I was impressed with the first hands on information we got from the Series X hands on from various outlets yesterday regarding the loading times for 360 and Xbox One games. There seems to be huge improvements to loading times as well as some framerate improvements to those games. Starting to build my excitement now :D
