16/10 - Forza Horizon 2 [First Finale]
27/10 - Bayonetta 2 [2nd Climax] (10 hrs, 33 mins)
30/10 - Legend of Korra [Normal]

So after going back and finishing up the second half of the game, my view on it actually has changed quite a bit. It's definitely not such a bad game after all. Still not sure if I would say it's genuinely great, but once I cracked the combat, it was certainly enjoyable. It was "good" I suppose.

Those moments which I only saw glimpses of before in the combat turned out to be fully realised in the end. The key was basically just learning to keep my Chi Meter up. Didn't feel like that was properly explained in the game, but once I realised that's what I was doing wrong, things got a lot more enjoyable. I still think there's poor signalling of incoming attacks from some of the enemies, but that feeling of dying randomly of no fault of my own more or less went away. Still a few seemingly unfair fights here and there, but not enough to damage the overall experience.

The runner levels with Naga are still rubbish though.

But anyway, if anyone is a fan of Korra/Avatar and Platinum, and wants a little action game where you get to use those powers, it's not bad. Maybe worth it on a sale or something. I think if I didn't have the rough patch with the combat and worked it out sooner the game probably would have lived up to my hopes much better. So in retrospect, I guess it did. Just remember to keep that Chi Meter up!

01/01 - Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
01/01 - Super Monkey Ball (Easy Levels)
01/01 - Super Monkey Ball (Advanced Levels)
02/01 - TRAUMA
03/01 - Machinarium
06/01 - Uplink
17/01 - Lyne
21/01 - Botanicula
23/01 - Cave Story+
28/01 - Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit
31/01 - Gunpoint
01/02 - Blocks That Matter
02/02 - Broken Age Act 1
11/02 - Analogue: A Hate Story
02/03 - Dark Souls
16/03 - Spec Ops: The Line
22/03 - 2048
03/04 - Monaco - Fin
15/04 - Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
02/05 - Castlevania
11/05 - Final Fantasy 13
19/05 - New Super Mario Bros. U
19/09 - Dark Souls II
12/10 - Electronic Super Joy: Groove City
18/10 - Final Fantasy 13-2
29/10 - Dark Souls II: Lost Crowns

I cannot fathom people who say that Final Fantasy 13 is a better game than 13-2, and yet apparently that was the general consensus of the game upon release. The gameplay was better, yet the story was worse, it seemed.

The stories of all three Final Fantasy 13 games are woefully bad in equal measure; at least it's more enjoyable to play. The ability to keep fighting after your party leader dies is a ludicrous thing to have not included in the first game, and is welcome here, and the pokémon mechanic is a really cool feature that has presents loads of options for different playstyles. If the story were far, far less stupid, it would be a great game in most respects. As it stands, it's worth playing for a few hours and then spending the other potential hundred doing something else.

I don't know how much I want to count the Lost Crowns trilogy as its own entry, but I already did as much for the separate Monaco campaigns, so I might as well. They were good; much better designed than the majority of the main game, especially when it comes to the bosses, but it all just highlights how much better the first game was; the level design is far more like Dark Souls 1, and the bosses (like most of the best bosses in the main game) are predominately callbacks to Dark Souls 1 bosses. The problem with the levels being designed more like the first game, with far longer stretches between bonfires, though, is that the weapon durability system in Dark Souls 2 isn't designed for such level design. On a normal run from one bonfire to the next, your weapons are far more likely to break if you don't bring a stash of repair powder, the repair spell, or a few backup sets of weapons; and while it's not hard to do that, it's still a solution to a problem in the design of the game.

One of the things that I did like about the DLC that has nothing to do with the first game is how much more human-like the NPC invasions are, using every cheap tactic in the book to try and wreck you. I also really liked the Frigid Outskirts area for the atmosphere, though the random nature of the reindeer spawns and how long a run back to the area boss it was diminished that quite quickly. Summoning a player who also had no idea about where we should be going from the beginning of the area, standing stock-still as the blizzard rages around us, then spotting a distant structure in the brief lull in the storm and running, being attacked from seemingly all sides as the wind picks up, an oppressive, cold, unrelenting death pushing down; it lifted my spirits immensely after I spent so much time painfully trying to get to the point where the key was. In fact, most of the Ivory King DLC was very well done.

30/10 - Legend of Korra [Normal]
31/10 - Forza Horizon 2 [Second Finale]

So I just went back to the game, although I never really left, and ended up "finishing" it for a second time. Probably the fastest second completion of a game I've ever done, even including stuff that only takes like an afternoon.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, my second run through The Darkness 2 may have been faster, but I can't be sure because my achievements for that game aren't all dated.

Alien Isolation [Hard]

Probably my game of the year. Absolutely incredible but it's not for everyone. I'm emotionally drained but wow so glad I bought this day one.

If you're on the fence I'd say there are points where the Alien will kill you no matter what you do. This is because the Alien has its own AI so will drop in front of you when it seems unfair but that will happen.

The other criticism over seen is the lack of save points, you're never not too far from one but it has its own risk reward and reminded me of bonfires in Dark Souls a bit.

Also it doesn't get going till Chapter 5 which is a shame as many people won't get there as the start is poor,. Dodgy Cutscenes and following NPCS happen in the beginning but it never happens again after that.

First time through to completion. I bought it when it originally came out and played it to about 70% through the story and have restarted three times since over the years and got not quite as far each time. I don't know why I've never completed it until now because I loved it each time, perhaps just distracted by newer releases each time.

Anyway, the Wii U double pack was the perfect chance to support the series again and to rectify that issue and I adored it from start to finish. The game felt smoother than when I played it before too, did the PS3 version have performance issues by any chance?

I actually played the majority of the game on the 360 first then got Bayonetta again as a bonus for pre-ordering Vanquish where at the height of my trophy rush I completed the ps3 version despite the nagging thought it was an inferior version. I actually enjoyed it from start (well maybe a few hours in) to finish though it was never apparent to me just how bad this version was but given that I too now have the Wii U version I'll see just how much of a difference it makes.

It'll be a rush to come off that game onto anything else but if that anything else is Bayonetta 2 you might just be ok :D

I never felt the PS3 version was bad when playing it because I had nothing else to compare it to (never got the 360 version) but I did feel like the combat was faster and smoother on Wii U. Half tempted to put my PS3 version in to confirm that :)

Funny you say that, I am really struggling to decide what game to move onto now. The only thing stopping me picking Bayonetta 2 is wanting to spend my annual leave playing that later this month (when my wife and so are out of the house) but I am desperately struggling to find something that won't fall flat in comparison to that experience.

Legend of Korra[Normal&Extreme](PC)- So I ended up really liking this one I will say that the reviews it got are really understandable it is really limited for your average Platinum game and it has some terrible difficult spikes ans design flaws(there's a part in chapter 6 that almost made me break the controler I think that's probably the worst thing I've ever played in a Platinum game)but the core Platinum combat style and movement it's still here and it's great!I love how the managed to capture perfectly how each element should feel and they are all fun to use(well water is the weak link since after you get the other ones it basically just serves as ranged)also for the first time pro-bending was actually interesting!
So yeah if you want more Platinum give this a shot but go with tamed expectations this is a budget title with a strong core but weak everything else.

PS:Extreme difficulty with the recommend item is a blast!

I've never played it myself, but I have heard the PS3 version of Bayonetta has some big framerate issues. The port wasn't done by Platinum themselves. They developed it for the 360, which is a bit odd considering they're a niche Japanese studio. I've heard people say that the 360 version is still the best too, and from what I've noticed, I would be inclined to agree. I get the feeling that the Wii U version looks just a tiny bit duller than the 360 version. But otherwise, it's still got a solid framerate and everything. Probably just some little quirk of how the Wii U renders stuff that makes it a little bit different. I don't think you would notice it unless you literally had the two versions running side-by-side. In fact, that's how I first noticed the difference. That was on some YouTube video though, so that might not have been reliable. Might just be imagining the difference just from seeing that video.

On the topic of the Korra reviews, I get the feeling that perhaps the reason it wasn't received so well was because reviewers ran in to the same problem I did, but didn't realise. Once I cracked it, my experience was far closer to the more positive reviews.

I haven't really found the Pro Bending mode all that interesting though. I went through the easiest level of that today, and it seemed like there was hardly anything to it. Is there something I'm missing? Just seems like it's mashing the light attack button while avoiding/parrying incoming attacks. And focusing on pushing the opposing team back, but since there's only three of them, that's hardly a demanding task.

Even Platinum hates the PS3 version of Bayonetta:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012- ... st-failure
In an interview with Edge, Platinum producer Atsushi Inaba confessed that the studio denied handling the PS3 port of Bayonetta, opting to instead pass it off to an in-house team at its publisher, Sega.

The resulting game featured washed-out colours, a choppy frame-rate, lengthy load times and control issues.

"The biggest failure for Platinum so far, the one that really sticks in my mind, is that [Bayonetta] port," lamented Inaba. "At the time we didn't really know how to develop on PS3 all that well, and whether we could have done it… is irrelevant: we made the decision that we couldn't. But looking back on the result, and especially what ended up being released to users, I regard that as our biggest failure."
On the Wii U v 360 version, Digital Foundry did a typically exhaustive, detailed and technical piece (that is to say dry, nitpicky and not for everyone) and found some discrepancies between the two:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... u-face-off
Bayonetta stands out as one of the best ports available on the Wii U. It's clear that a lot of time and effort was poured into this release in order to preserve and in places improve upon the original experience. While it's not dramatically superior to the original Xbox 360 version, we'd have to give it the nod as the definitive version of the game. The elimination of screen-tear, faster loading, and solid performance levels make a huge difference.

On the harder levels of Pro-bending it gets more interesting since the Ai is harder and Mako and Bolin are pretty worthless so things get alot more tense, but your right it isnt a very complex game but I had a surprising amount of fun in it.

Looking at the video on the Digital Foundry article, it seems that it's not just my imagination. The Wii U version definitely looks a little duller and washed out compared to the 360 version. I felt like that was making a difference for me actually playing too, but I wasn't sure, since as I've mentioned before I find the first few levels of the game can be a bit of a drag anyway, especially coming off Bayo 2.

I don't ever remember there being any screen tear on the 360 version though. Nothing that was noticeable anyway. That washed out look of the Wii U version though, I did notice. If we're ignoring the extra content, I'd say that still makes the 360 version better. And that content is really just costumes and minor cosmetic changes that are there as a novelty anyway.
