Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 - Cane and Rinse 125

“Yes, it’s undeniable! We’re detecting Power Star energy patterns in the nearest galaxy.”

In this, the penultimate podcast of our six month long Super Mario bonanza, we discuss the first and third highest-rated videogames of all time (according to GameRankings), Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Could Nintendo EAD Tokyo helmed by Yoshiaki Koizuki bounce back five years after the (slight) disappointment of Super Mario Sunshine? Leon, Darren Gargette, Josh and a host of Cane and Rinse contributors give their views on the cosmic matter.

Additional audio used in this show is as follows:

Track 1: Overture by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo
Track 2: Gusty Garden Galaxy by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo
Track 3: Super Mario 2007 by Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo

Cane and Rinse 125 was edited by Darren Gargette.

Leon, you aren't mistaken: there are a few stars in Galaxy 1 where it's possible to go down a side path to a minigame that rewards you with a secret star. They're few and far between, though; I think they might be one per main galaxy or a little fewer. Also most of those come down to meeting a luma halfway through the level who wants about as many star bits as you could possibly have picked up in the level by that point and will turn into the side planet if you have enough. It is a little more freeing than Sunshine, though, I will admit.

So you're not doing 3D Land and World yet?

It's funny, this game and Zelda Twilight Princess were the two games that made my give up on the Wii and move on. It wasn't helped by the game touting Co-Op play, which had myself and Linda really looking forward to it, and then finding out the co-op partner could be played by a lobotomised monkey. Still without that we may never have turned to the 360 and PS3 so perhaps alls well that ends well :)

I've tried to get into Super Mario Galaxy a number of times and never been able to get into. I just can't get my head around the controls.

Yeah, it's an issue I briefly touched upon but I was talking anecdotally about those who aren't overly familiar with videogames. Didn't realise it extended outside of that, too! Definitely a hurdle for a lot of people, then.

The plan is to do another Mario/Wario sequence at some point in the future featuring:

Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Wario Land II
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Wario World
Wario Land: The Shake Dimension
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario 3D World

I love Wario Land 4. one of my all time favourites. Retronauts did a pretty great Wario retrospective here: http://www.retronauts.com/?p=217
