The Secret of Monkey Island - Cane and Rinse 192

“That’s the second biggest monkey head I’ve ever seen!”

LucasArts (nee Lucasfilm Games) discovered buried treasure with their swashbuckling 1990 point-and-clicker, The Secret of Monkey Island. The Cane and Rinse crew of Leon, Brian, Karl, Ryan and a galley full of contributors don their fanciest pants and recall their time insult swordfighting on Melee Island(TM), the uneventful yet explosive voyage aboard the Sea Monkey and eventually exploring the lava-filled depths of the fabled Monkey Island itself, with nothing but the company of a disembodied head. So you want to be a pirate, eh? You look more like a flooring inspector.

Music used in this issue:

Track 1: Opening Theme by Michael Land and Patrick Mundy.

Track 2: Le Chuck’s Theme by Michael Land and Patrick Mundy.

Great episode, really enjoyed that. They're always so good when it's a game I know so well myself. And Leon, you're right - the Bounty Pack is (or at least was) commanding a decent price on eBay. I sold my copy for over £40 at least ten years ago. And that was without the large cardboard outer box too!

Thanks Alex.

I noticed that I said 1990 when I mentioned the Bounty Pack, but obviously I meant 1999. Turns out it was in fact released in 1997, presumably a few months after Curse.

Looks like the price has come down a bit, under £25 on Amazon uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listin ... ition=used

The remastered edition of this game doesn't seem to be on my iPhone app store any more but I know I played it on my commutes? Wonder why its gone...?

Usually because a later version of iOS has broken it, and the dev hasn't the money, time or inclination to fix it.

Have been looking forward to this one for a long time, and it didn't disappoint. Such a huge and influential game for me as a kid. Thanks guys - great episode. Very much looking forward to the sequel and any other Lucastarts adventures should you get round to them in future.

The iOS version has indeed been pulled from the store, for no discernible reason. It's certainly not due to compatibility, since when I tried to look for it a few months back I ended up getting a, erm, less than legal version - which ran fine.

(I don't usually steal games, but I wanted to play it again and it had gone. It didn't even appear in my previously purchased list so I could download it again even though you couldn't actually buy it, but they've completely removed it from the Appstore entirely, thus I had no qualms whatsoever in pirating it. I think it's what Guybrush would have wanted).

Wonder if I can claim back the £5 I paid for it! Cheeky buggers...

I suspect it probably has something to do with the publisher, you know, not existing anymore.

Fair enough in that case I guess, but not letting people re-download what they've already paid for is inexcusable. But that's a whole new debate, isn't it, and something I've torn my hair at with Microsoft in the past.

Ah right. Wasn't aware of that. Anyhow, not meaning to derail the thread.

Enjoyed the episode a lot and its reminded me that I got 3 parts through the episodic series on my Mac. May tackle the last 2 now.
