Nova Limits - Ryan Henwood (feat. Adam Axeby)

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a lovely little co-op game I played through with my wife. This song immediately sets the tone for the game. I could explain more but I think the song is good enough I don’t have to.

I’m often surprised a track hasn’t been suggested prior to my request, or the search feature hasn’t been working properly (I think it is). Some time ago I backed off these requests, but it’s been a long time and they’re still awesome.

Battlefield 3 Main Theme - Johan Skugge and Jukka Rintamäki

This is simply an awesome track. It becomes a part of you when you play a lot of BF3 because instead of a big warning that a multiplayer match only has a minute left, music just starts playing. I don’t really like the massive burst of discordant sound at the end.

Bonus (it's only like 33 seconds, and doesn't really stand up on its own): Battlefield 3 Dark Theme - Johan Skugge and Jukka Rintamäki

I think the composers had a debate about how to lead into the main theme and this was the result. It has the same blast of noise at the end as the main theme, which keeps it from perfectly leading into that song.

Cosmology – Stephen Barton

I love this track’s transition from “story about stuff” to “some badass cybernetic shit is about to go down.” Almost like the machine revealing itself behind its fleshy pilot.

Self Esteem Fund – Kelly Bailey

This song from Portal made me realize a couple things while I was playing:
I might actually be alone in this strange facility, and I haven’t heard a lot of music so far in the game. It’s a special kind of aloneness conveyed by this track. If you ever got outside one of Quake’s levels you would see the map on which you were fighting was suspended in space. It looked small, insignificant, and irrelevant. You were fighting through a map full of monsters, but the playable field was just one particle out in space. There were no other players or characters, and no one cared that you were playing. It’s not lonely, it’s the sound of being alone. The difference is that when you’re lonely you miss others. This track makes you wonder if ever there were others, or perhaps what “other” even means. When you’re this alone, you create your own purpose, because you are the only living record of your own existence. When I heard this in Portal, I realized I was really, really alone.

Science is Fun – Mike Morasky

I love this song, it made entering co-op so exciting in Portal 2. The song informs you that you were definitely going to have an awesome time. It is also one of the first things I hear each morning when I wake up because I’ve set it as an alarm tone.

Cara Mi Addio – Mike Morasky

After playing Portal 2 I’d largely forgotten about this song. Cane and Rinse’s Portal 2 episode reminded me about it and attached a significance to it which I’d never assigned myself. I played through Portal 2 with my best friend and when he and I play a game we tend to skip over a lot of story in order to keep playing. We are sometimes too ruthless with our skipping for certain kinds of games, not even letting a scene fully begin before we skip it. We were honestly a bit annoyed with Portal 2 for having so much down time and dead space. Perhaps if I’d gone solo I would have had a greater appreciation, but thankfully a podcast discussion filled in the gaps for me. I find this song genuinely emotional now.

Probably too long and too much of a slow burner to be featured on the podcast, but I have to mention it anyway. One of the very best atmospheric tracks I've ever heard, and a great callback to Super Metroid to boot.

In fact, please hurry up and do a Metroid Special already! :!:

I've had fun playing through Sonic Mania. Whilst the series will never be a huge favourite of mine, one thing I do love it for is the music. I don't recall this one from previous entries but it may well be a remix. Regardless, I was stuck on Lava Reef Zone for sometime and this catchy tune made it considerably more bearable:

Lava Reef Zone was in Sonic and Knuckles and both themes were great even then. :)

Less an individual recommendation, more partial brag. :D

I picked up some OST's from Japan (don't worry, it's not contagious).

Persona 3 soundtrack, Persona 5 three disc soundtrack, and the Persona 4: The Golden Animation soundtrack. Still in Japan so everything is in suitcases.

The only tip I have for finding game OST's in physical stores is this: look on the spine of the CD case for Square Enix. Once your eyes adjust to that, you'll know you're in the right area! :P

I preordered the vinyl edition of the Persona 5 soundtrack. It will be the only game soundtrack I buy on vinyl.

I picked up Fallout 3 on vinyl a few weeks back as I couldn't resist the radiation-yellow disc colour. Trying to resist further purchases primarily because I don't actually own an LP player. Proving difficult now that I follow Laced and others on Twitter...

I'd like to request a fun track from Amanita Design's Machinarium!

Machinarium revived my interest in point-and-click adventure games, having last played Pyjama Sam as a youngster. The game's intricate and living 'junk punk' aesthetic instantly drew me in and I knew I needed to experience this game for myself.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed taking turns solving puzzles and clicking about the levels, which I delighted in as she does not play games at all. Every so often, we would get stuck and need to consult the Game Boy Answer Book! I admired Amanita for not simply giving the player any direct answers, instead having to complete a mini game to unlock a vital, but often cryptic, clue!

Even more delightful was the whimsical melody that played as you navigated through the mini-game. Certainly one of Machinarium's more upbeat tracks, this piece is genuinely toe-tapping and is a credit to Tomas Dvorak's creativity. The Gameboy Tune always reminds me of the delight of solving the intuitive, head-scratching puzzles littered around Machinarium's clanky, rusty, whimsical world.

"Songs'

Post by groovyreg »

Look, I don't want to be too snarky but Dictionary.com defines a song as...
noun
1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing, especially one in rhymed stanzas; a lyric; a ballad.

2. a musical piece adapted for singing
Love the show but instrumentals aren't songs.

if you wanted to do an episode that was entirely songs, I could easily pass you a dozen or so... and they wouldn’t all be JRPG end themes either.

Mario + Rabbids has one of the most joyful scores I've heard in a while. Grant Kirkhope is at it again, making me smile with every subsequent level. The battle theme is an amazing piece, given its repetitive use, but the mid-boss theme is the true standout. I honestly feel like the music in this game is a large reason behind why I'm enjoying it so much.

I havent played Divinity Original Sin 2 yet but from everything I've seen it seems to be an improvement on the first one in everyway, the soundtrack in particular caught me by surprise with some incredible tracks I now find myself listening on repeat, my favorite is probably the Queen's High Seas, the song is not only a great pirate song but it also manages to marry the comedic tones of divinity with it's still epic high fantasy setting, a great mixture:

Its been a while since my last lobby for Hollow Knight. This time very mysterious, almost ominous track called Crystal Peak.

edit: no one is paying me to do that :p really ;)

Deemo is out for the Switch on the Japanese store. It's made by the folk who did Voez, which I enjoyed though much of the music was too frantic and trancey for my tastes. This is much more piano-based and everything so far is very pretty indeed. This is my favourite, Dream. It reminds me of a cross between the soundtracks from Amelie and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. It's very sentimental and nostalgic, and goes straight for the heart. I've probably listened to it thirty times this evening.

Blood Stained Lake from the Elemental Master Soundtrack really stands out on a stellar soundtrack on this often forgotten Megadrive gem.

Loved the last episode of the pod, keep it up!

As an added bonus, Etrian Odyssey 5 is out in the West in a few short days... Can we get one of these killer battle tracks on the pod?
