Sakimoto as composer for 12 was part of the attempt to make it ‘fit’ with the other games set in Ivalice that also had Sakimoto as composer (FFT and Vagrant Story). To the point where unless you know the three games well, you might not easily be able to tell which of the three games any given track was actually from.

Interesting. I didn't know that. It's been more than a decade since I played Tactics and I never tackled Vagrant Story. I suppose I would have gotten more out of 12's soundtrack if I had been aware of this?

not certain if this is the correct thread for this but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea where to get the music from the recent special operations from Ghost Recon Wildlands?

I'm particularly interested in getting the music that played in the background during the helicopter escape section in Special Operations 3 (the future recon tie-in) ... the game itself ahs a bit too much audio over it (people talking, enemies exploding, that kind of thing). I can probably replay it and grab it somehow but if there is a clean version available somewhere ...

Maybe. There are no direct theme reuses, it’s more that Sakimoto has a style and instrumentation choice he doesn’t really vary much. See what you think:

(I’ll stick them behind a spoiler, these aren’t requests for the show as such)
Spoiler: show

I have a bunch of ‘12 minute long pieces that I was saving till I guest on the show again some day’, one of which is ‘Climax of the Greylands Incident’, which is the most Sakimoto thing to have ever been burned to disc. It touches pretty much every one of his signature style tropes.

So while we’re on Sakimoto anyway, let’s throw that in there...

Possibly a redundant selection as I hope it’ll be featured on the podcast for the game but if you ever do an elevator music or jazz special I’d love this to be included. So smarmy and slinky

Would like to request a track from a more recent game, Planet Alpha. Was hoping this game would scratch my ‘Another World’ / ‘Flashback itch but it unfortunately comes up a bit short. Some clunky controls and some frustrating design choices takeaway from some great Sci-Fi visuals and sound.

The track I would like to share is called “Sky gate” which kicks in at a significant part in the story leaving a lasting impression on me and my opinion of the game.

Cheers

Pac Jump Up! by Akitaka Tohyama (aka AJURIKA) is a loud, thumping, in your face electronic tune and a great fit for the neon lights and breakneck speed of Pac-Man Championship Edition 2.

Rock It/Pack Attack, from Crash Bandicoot2: Cortex Strikes Back
Composed by Josh Mancell, remixed by AlbirdVampPrince

The first time you see Crash when you boot up his second game he’s greeting you from a Jetpack, looking impossibly cooler than anything in his first adventure. Yet for the majority of the game, said Jetpack is nowhere to be seen. The series would eventually go overboard with gimmicks, but though there were plenty to go around here, the main focus was still on the platforming, as it should be. This meant that when you finally got to the zero-platforming Jetpack stages, they felt all the more impactful. And as far as I’m concerned, they’re still a blast to play. Having completely free movement in all dimensions felt exhilarating, especially as I weaved through lasers and electrical wires in an evil space station.
And sometimes I would stop and look at the earth, occasionally shown in the far distance, and listen to the music. Not only does it sounds appropriately space-y, it sounds eerie, beautiful and exciting –it makes a mutated marsupial hunting pink crystals in a jetpack sound like a grandiose blastoff to humanitys final frontier. It’s a heck of a capper to the adventure, and for me, is the high point of the entire Naughty Dog era Crash soundscape, which is no small feat.

I love both the original and remastered versions of the track for different reasons, though I lack the musical know-how to articulate why. Luckily for me, AlbirdVampPrince on youtube has remixed both into a single track, which, as far as I’m concerned, is the definitive version.

This weeks request is called Garbage day from the recently released game Donut County. Cool mechanics, nice art style, charming characters and a cracker of a soundtrack.

Enjoy

I think when I requested a track from Ace Combat Zero a while back, I said something about how I could have picked Zero but that would have been too obvious. Suffice to say, I've done some growing as a person since then and realized that a lot of the time, the reason a choice is obvious is because it's just that good. Zero is certainly one of those cases.

Not only is it a kickass track on its own merits, it also perfectly epitomizes the moment of the game it scores, a nerve-wracking mix between an intimate and deadly dance between the clouds that can switch into a jousting match at the drop of a hat. (Let no one accuse the Ace Combat series of being subtle when it comes to the "Knights of the Air" metaphor.) All the while listening to your nemesis explain the philosophical underpinnings of his various misdeeds in best Metal Gear Solid fashion. Just listening to the track makes my palms get sweaty to the point of having trouble holding a Dual Shock.

I'd like to submit the first world map theme, Without a Care / Casually, composed by Yoshino Aoki and Akari Kaida for Breath of Fire 3. I haven't played this game for years but still this piece of music pops into my head every so often. The soundtrack to this game is fantastic, forgoing the usual orchestral fantasy trope music for a much more varied approach. This game seems to get very little mention these days and its a real shame, as I think its a true gem of the PS1 era and one of Capcoms better forays into the RPG genre.

I'm listening to the recent 20th anniversary rearrangement of the wonderful Panzer Dragoon Saga soundtrack while at work and I'd forgotten the lovely little section in the track Village Of Zoah that is incredibly reminiscent of the Back To The Future score. That sounds like a complete mismatch and entirely out of place, but actually it's just perfect and makes me go all goose-pimpley.

Just thought I'd share...

Final Fight Arcade

Though it isn't an amazing piece of music you would listen to again and again I heard it recently for the first time in years and it put me back into my local arcade in the early 90's hearing it blasting out from the machine and the smell of cigarettes and not much natural light in the room.

I would like to request a track from one of my favourite series, Halo. When I heard Martin O'Donnell was not going to be scoring halo 4 I was pretty disappointed. However, I ended up loving what Neil Davidge did with the score in this game.

The track am going to request is not from Davidge but from Kazuma Jinnouchi, ’Never Forget’. Kazuma would later go on to score Halo 5, but he gives O’Donnell’s classic track a new sense of epicness.

Enjoy

"Queen’s Garden", by Christopher Larkin (Hollow Knight)

Yep, another huge fan of Hollow Knight here. I recently started this game, thanks in no small part to peer pressure and, honestly, I’m loving it, partly because of its impeccable and engaging gameplay but especially for its art and musical directions. I love not only how the music complements the visuals but also how even by itself it’s very enjoyable. Actually, the music stand pretty much perfectly on its own, so much that I currently consider it one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in gaming, at least in recent decades. So, yeah, another huge fan :)

Lunatic Pandora - from FFVIII by Uematsu

Playing through this game recently for the CnR podcast I was immediately entranced by the atmospheric and eerie music accompanying my first foray into the futuristic dungeon, Lunatic Pandora.
It is like Uematsu channeled his inner 'Hip' Tanaka (Metroid) but still managed to keep much of the same 'progressive meets classical' arrangements that he is known for.
To me this is right up there with the FFVII world map theme as my favorite FFtune.

Im playing through Wolfenstein II: New Colossus and have enjoyed the soundtrack so much that I've been putting it on during my commutes. My highlight of the soundtrack is The Kreisau Circle. I cant pinpoint where it occurs within the game if i'm being totally honest but it is a fine piece nonetheless.

My other favourite happens during (in my hunble opinion) the best sequence in the game. A balls to the wall escape against all the odds. Listened in isolation its not quite as good as during the gameplay sequence obviously but I think it conveys the escalating threat and urgency of the situation. Lovely.
