Sound of Play: 28

Welcome, once again to the podcast all about our favourite videogame music – Sound of Play.

For many of us, it’s hard to think of almost any videogame without our minds conjuring up the music that accompanied it. Over the decades they’ve evolved from simplistic monaural beeps and bloops to full orchestral scores recorded in 7.1 surround, but from their earliest days right up to today, soundtracks have played an integral part of our memories of the games we played, and the times in our lives when we were playing them. What we aim to bring you with Sound of Play is a diverse sample of our favourites pieces from the many air-punching, spine-tingling, tear-jerking and grin-inducing videogame soundtracks we’ve heard over the years.

This show’s presenters were: Leon Cox, Darren Gargette and Joshua Garrity

with community contributions from Scrustle, Follow My Ruin and Catatonic Nali.

Track listing for this show is as follows:

Track 1: Downstream by Shira Kammen - Braid, 2008
Track 2: Try, Try Again by Yoko Shimomura - Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bros, 2013
Track 3: Pursuit ~ Cornered by Masakazu Sugimori - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, 2001
Track 4: Hometown by Matt Furniss - Soccer Kid, 1993
Track 5: Prelude by Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy IX, 2000
Track 6: Dynamite Rave by Naoki Meada - Dance Dance Revolution 5th Mix, 2001
Track 7: I’m Here Now by ? - Tekken 5, 2005
Track 8: Exile, Vilify by The National - Portal 2, 2011
Track 9: Flight by Yoshitaka Azuma - Panzer Dragoon, 1995

The composer wasn't consistent across the Phoenix Wright series as a whole.

Game 2 (Justice for All here in the west) was composed by Akemi Kimura (sometimes credited as Naoto Tanaka) and it's probably the weakest of the scores, but still pretty fun. He went on to Platinum Games.
Game 3 (Trials and Tribulations) went for Noriyuki Iwadare, composer on the Grandia games amongst others, and it's a lot better. He went on to be the main composer for the remaining games in the series to date.

If you can track down the "Gyakuten Meets Orchestra" CD it's pretty fun. Here's the game one suite from it:

Thanks for fixing that.

Enjoyed this one a lot guys. The Phoenix Wright and Final Fantasy tracks were great. Also nice to hear The National too.

Been lucky enough to interview Matt and Scott twice, once for my own defunct music site (To hell with...) and also DiS. The latter's up here if you wanted a read:

It was recorded at the time Portal 2 came out in fact...

What ever happened to the intro mash-up? Thought that intro was amazing!
I kinda miss it now that its no longer there at the start of each episode.

It's a great piece of work from Ryan, but opening with a new track each time is less repetitive!

Perhaps Mr Hamann will bring it back with added sleigh-bells for the Xmas Sound of Play..?
